About this project
Although our Kickstarter campaign is over, you can still order emberlight at emberlight.co!
emberlight fits to you and your life
- Easy to setup. No wiring required. No hub required. Simply add emberlight to any light bulb and it's installed. Our mobile app steps you through the simple WiFi connection.
- Easy to use. Once installed, our free app gives you on, off, and dim control of your lights through your smartphone.
- Easy to understand. emberlight uses the light bulbs and sockets you already own.
emberlight is flexible and smart
- Understands proximity. emberlight can turn your lights on and off automatically without taking your phone out of your pocket.
- Understands scale. Add emberlight to your home at your own pace. Since there is no hub or pro installation required, you can start small without worry and add additional units later.
- Understands mobility. emberlight can move with you when you go to a new apartment or home. emberlight also decouples the evolving technology of light bulbs from the ability to control your lights giving you the ability to use any bulb.
emberlight works for you
- Values safety. Whether you’re away on vacation or you return home by yourself, emberlight understands safety. We can turn your lights on remotely or respond to your location as it relates to your house so that you return to a warmly lit home.
- Values automation. Set up presets with emberlight and enhance the time you spend at home. Quickly enjoy presets like dinner party or movie night.
- Values saving. Emberlight can slightly dim your lights so that you don’t notice a difference but the power grid does.
We’ve been prototyping for almost a year now, and we are close to being able to do our first production run. We’ve built a team based on diverse expertise, experience, and passion. We want you to share in emberlight's vision to bring simple and versatile smart lighting to every home.
We know competitors exist in the lighting space. Big guys. Ok, let’s rephrase that... REALLY big guys. But thats OK, because we’re taking a different approach. As a startup, we have the ability to build a product from the ground up without legacy bias. We decided that we don’t need to push the mainstream connected LED product like everyone else and can build something more flexible that works for everyone.
People say "hardware is hard," and it should be left to the big boys. Well, at emberlight we put together a team of Silicon Valley hardware veterans with Silicon Valley software engineers and designers to tackle hard things. We’ve all cut our teeth for the past 10-20 years at top tech firms but now we've come together to change the way all of us interact with our home. Passion, talent, and possibility is heating up with emberlight, and we’d love for you to be a part of it.
In return for your support, you’ll be the first to get a product from an accomplished team who is working to better your world, the first to be a part of a product produced by people who just happen to believe in the possibility of design+engineering+you. Let your lights work for you so you can spend time on what’s really important. Let emberlight get the lights, you focus on shining.
Great news: Dragon Innovation has done a review of our project and has pre-qualified that we're a team that knows our stuff and that we have a manufacturable product.
We'd love to tell you more about emberlight. For all media or press inquiries, please contact Atif Noori via email - firstname.lastname@example.org
Risks and challenges
As with most hardware projects on Kickstarter, the biggest concerns for people tend to be around manufacturing and supply chain. We've built a team of veterans who have shipped technology products (both hardware and software) many times before. Each member of our team is known for their ability to deliver. Additionally, Atif Noori, our CEO, spent the last 8 years working with top global semiconductor companies to enable them to create and manufacture the world's best mobile chip technologies. We already have alignment with several potential factory partners and will choose the appropriate one based on the scale of our Kickstarter campaign (along with several other factors).
Of course, as with any startup and product ramp, unforeseen challenges do come up. You can be assured that we will tackle any issues or bumps in the road head-on, as we have many times over before. We'll also keep our backers up-to-date and well informed... it's how we roll.

We love all the other products on the market that focus on customers and specific use cases (e.g. Nest) and apps that connect different technologies in our lives (e.g. IFTTT). We will have an API. As we continue to move along, we’ll keep you updated on the release date.
The master and child units can be controlled independently. How they work operationally with each other won't effect the user, except that the master unit needs to be installed. The master effectively acts like the 'hub', connected by WiFi to our cloud backend, and communicates commands to the child units by Bluetooth LE. You'll be able to control any light independently, so from a user control point of view, they are independent. Each pack comes with a master unit.
Shipping in the US is free of charge. For international orders, there is an additional cost shown for each tier and needs to be added at checkout. The shipment does not include country specific custom fees or other costs.
The product is designed to work with all main voltage/frequencies used around the globe (up to 265V). Our first product will have the mechanical fittings for the Edison 26/27 screw base which is the most common. If we are successful with these, we’ll follow up with bayonet and down light options also.
Yes, we are currently working out the details of this and will follow-up shortly.
WiFi range is very dependent on the router you have and your house layout. For bluetooth LE, in our initial C&F tests, the range was 55 ft indoors (which we expect to improve for the shipped product to >100ft), but it will depend heavily on your house layout.
Nope, just the first one.
Yes, the light switches work as normal if you don’t have your phone with you. Just remember to leave the switch on to be able to control from your phone later on.
Yes, provided the light bulb you’ve attached the emberlight is a dimmable light bulb then you will be able to dim.
Unlike most connected bulbs, emberlight is separate from the light, so if the bulb breaks or burns out, you don’t have to throw away emberlight (which is essentially a computer) with it.
Yes. Each user will have an account. You can add users to your house’s emberlight.
No, we take security seriously. Once set up, emberlight devices are tied to a specific account. Only that user, or guests he/she grants access to, will be able to control the light. All communication between applications, devices, and emberlight's cloud servers will use SSL to prevent unauthorized snooping.
Yes they can! They just all need to be in the same house.
Yes they can! Although they talk to eachother, from the user's perspective, they can be treated as acting independently.
Since emberlight is an intermediary between the socket and bulb, it will add some height. Our prototype adds roughly an additional 35mm. We're continuing to look at ways to reduce it. Most lights fixtures and lamps have enough clearance, but some may not. There are 2 options to address if you do have an issue. (1) A smaller size bulb - instead of A19, try A17 or less. (2) A lamp harp extender.
