About

Are you a Beastie Boys fan?

Welcome to our BEASTIE BAK - Kickstarter!

I am looking to finally print some rare and unpublished photos that I took of the Beastie Boys in the 80’s. I have been looking through the pictures that I took from 1983-87 around the time I did a shoot for their album, “Licensed to Ill" and all the tour photos that I shot at that time and before. I would now like to share these images with all the Beastie Boys and 70's fans out there but need to scan and print them.

My show "Beastie Bak" will include images of 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees the Beastie Boys, in collaboration with renown graffiti artist Cey Adams and his graffiti style graphic art creating a “photo-graffiti” fusion.

I have started to look at these photos but more have to be scanned, printed, framed, and shipped to shows across America.

Hi, my name is Sunny Bak. I have been a photographer since the 70’s when my father loaned me his Nikon Rangefinder. Since then, I have been shooting in NY, London and LA.

I used to go out to shoot celebrities as a kid paparazzi. I started hanging out backstage and documenting some of the biggest stars including the original cast of A Chorus Line and Chicago.

In the 1980's I developed my own candid documentary style of photography using Polapan film photographing New York City’s downtown diva scene. My first images were in People magazine shooting up-and-coming celebrities like Billie Jean King, Madonna and Keanu Reeves.

Later, in the 80’s as a fashion photographer in NYC I had interns from the high school I went to, City as School, including a young man named Dave Skilken who had a band called the Young and the Useless. Artist Cey Adams and his best friend Adam Horovitz used to hang out at my studio on 18th and Broadway with Adam Yauch and Michael Diamond in tow. These boys were in an upcoming rap band called the Beastie Boys.

I met Cey and the Beastie Boys when we were all starting our careers in photography, art and music. 30 years later we have a unique perspective on the times we lived in our youth and the burgeoning hip hop culture in New York in the 80’s.

Occasionally, I would use the Boys as stand-ins for my fashion shoots. They were a lot of fun and made for some interesting photography.

Inevitably, they asked me to shoot an album cover for their first LP, "Licensed to Ill", which I watched them record at Chung King Studio in Chinatown. If you are familiar with the album you will know my shot of the gatefold image of the Beastie Boys in front of the Unisphere in Queens. After recording the album, they wanted to use my studio in New York as the location for their first music video off that album called Fight for Your Right to Party

Later, I joined them on a short part of their Licensed to Ill tour and had the opportunity to shoot some rare and unpublished photographs of the Beastie Boys during their rise to fame.

For more than 25 years, I kept the negatives from that time in storage. Eventually, I decided to look at the shots and showed them to Adam Yauch and Cey to see what they thought. I finally started printing the old negatives and exhibited them for the first time at the launch of the Venice Art Crawl 4 years ago to a very limited audience. I also showed the photographs at my friend Ivy Brown’s gallery in NYC in May 2012. On the morning after the opening there, we started getting calls about Adam Yauch’s passing. It was a very sad and sorrowful time for all of us that knew him. It was also interesting to see that fans from far and wide came to our show as a place to grieve and pay their respects to our dear friend. Ultimately, the show became a tribute to Adam and has special meaning to me now.

September 5, 2014 I am bringing the images with art by “The 4th Beastie Boy” Cey Adams, photography by James Henderson and work by new, upcoming Venice Artists to Miami to Studio 18 in Broward County through October 16, 2014.

Following the show at Studio 18, I am hoping to tour the exhibition around the south and back up the east coast ending in Brooklyn, NY to coincide with MCA day in May 2015. I hope you can join me and bring these images around the country to Beastie Boys fans from far and wide.

You can be a part of the journey.

I give my deepest heart felt THANKS to YOU for being part of this Beastie adventure!
