BACKGROUND

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of Wilfred Owen's death and we are raising funds to commemorate his life with a film about his incredible final year on earth.

The Burying Party Poster
The Burying Party Poster

A story of forbidden love, sacrifice, Bohemia, art and war, this is our most ambitious project to date. Film Instinct Productions and Sine Wave Media are the award-winning filmmakers behind:

  • Post-apocalyptic feature film The Young, winner at the Los Angeles Movie AwardsBest Director at the Liverpool International Film Festival and Best Feature Film at the Latina Film Commission.
  • Sanctimonia, premiering at the Histories of Thought exhibition in Ghent.
  • Saddenly Now, winner at the Cinema World Fest Awards

WILFRED'S UNTOLD STORY

The story will chart the extraordinary final year of a man who is generally regarded as Britain's finest war poet.

What he spoke about in his poetry is about what is happening today. The brutal, all-consuming, life-destroying nature of conflict. World leaders are threatening one another with devastating loss of life, families are left destitute in their war-torn environments, and Owen's words speak truer than ever before:

"If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori."

- Wilfred Owen

That old lie is "It is sweet and proper to die for one's country."

From 1917 to 1918, the 25-year-old was party to some of the most influential literary figures of his generation, Charles K Scott Moncrieff, Robert Graves, his mentor Siegfried Sassoon and Robbie Ross.

After convalescing with Sassoon at Craiglockhart Hospital near Edinburgh due to "shell shock", he spent many spectacular bohemian days and nights in London with his peers. He then resolved to return to the front against Sassoon's advice, moving towards the Battle of Sambre while flooded with memories of his times at home.

It has been constantly ignored that Wilfred was gay, (as was Sassoon and Moncrieff, Ross and Graves) but we embrace this fact in our story. This is a tale of outsiders who changed the world through their bravery and unique talent, at a time where they would not be "suffered" by the British Empire.

WHAT WE'VE GOT

This new project is our most exciting venture yet. Our first phase of filming was an absolute joy. Filming from Edinburgh to Llandudno and the Athenaeum to Falkner Square, we captured the first half of the story.

WHAT'S NEXT

Our next phase follows Wilfred's time in World War One. Our script includes battle scenes and many characters and extras.

In order to make this film come to life we have various obstacles we need to overcome. We are looking forward to this challenge, but we can't do it without your support! Funds from this campaign will go to:

  • LOCATIONS - to authentically represent what it was like in The Somme.
  • CAST AND CREW -We will need to pay all of our cast and crew, keep a roof over their heads, feed them, and get them from place to place.
  • FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS - We will have to pay submission fees in order to have our film seen by the right people and screened. Not only that, but we need to be insured just in case
  • COSTUME AND PROPS - Despite evidence to the contrary, no one turned up with underpants on their head and pencils up their nose.

We are privileged to have the incredible anatomical artist Pascale Pollier on board to create some crucial effects for the film.

The attention to detail will be paramount, from sound to costume, from cinematography to locations.

Our goal is to send this film to major festivals, and have it screened in the Summer before showing the film on the 100th anniversary of Wilfred Owen's death. That date is the 4th November 2018.

Having filmed the first half of the script in stunning locations with remarkable performances, we can't wait to get going on the next part.

Risks and challenges

There are always a lot of risks and challenges with every production. With this one, it's all about authenticity. Costumes, locations, all the things that need financial support, we are working tirelessly to source. With your help, it will mean we don't have to multi role as much and miss key elements of the story-telling. We've prepared with an amazing team. The crew was stunning in September and we continue with most of the same team.
