About this project
Over 300 million people make billions of decisions everyday during their quest for the “American Dream.” We have created an entertaining yet realistic life simulation game which captures the excitement, challenges, power and humor of daily life.
You don’t even need to live in the USA... We offer virtual green cards!
More than just a game...
MyAmericanGame is an original and innovative new social game that lets you live a lifetime worth of experiences in a fraction of the time. The game enables players, with their friends, in their quest for the American Dream, to test the limits of their ambition and curiosity with thousands of real world situations in a fun and challenging life simulation.
Start Beginning after high school graduation for Americans (or a newly issued "Green Card" for foreigners), players must decide between going to college or straight to work. Their choice of cities and education level will impact their job opportunities in this reality-based adventure. Dating, relationships, travel and even jail are all possibilities as players advance through increasingly difficult "stages" which results in a "report card" type progress review as they compete for love, status and economic independence (aka money).
You Decide Every decision the player makes increases their emotional connection to their character and shapes their future. Early on, players realize that all decisions matter, albeit some more than others. In fact, this game mirrors the euphoric moments of watching the birth of your first child as well as getting fired from your dream job during a "corporate reorganization" which didn't include you.
Date or Play with Friends Social interaction with other players, including unregistered friends, is thoughtfully woven throughout game play to offer exchanges that make our lives more interesting like; inviting friends to a party, asking them for advice about a sticky situation or just visiting them in the hospital so they can heal faster (always within content). The interactions also are drivers increasing a player’s "Status," which unlock many of the exclusive opportunities that only the rich and famous of our society enjoy!
Travel the World It is one thing to date someone from Italy or Sweden but in our game you can travel to those counties and experience their culture and social life firsthand.
As a social game that appeals to non-gamers and gamers of all ages, our players get to experience their possibilities navigating the matrix of life here, while global players are issued temporary “green cards” to live the American Dream without leaving their country. The game is free to play for all users but sells virtual goods which unlock unique opportunities beyond the core experience for players.
Instead of calling it the Gamification of Life, we call it the Lification of Game. The goal of the game is the acquisition of the American Dream...however you choose to define it.
When did MyAmericanGame begin?
In 1999, American Dream 101 was created to design an interactive life simulation game to be played over the internet. It was text based because most people had dial-up which was notoriously slow. The game, although designed for the general public, became successful in high schools, eventually being played for over a decade in some of the largest school districts in the country. As the game expanded with more content and new features, it slowly morphed into an education product. Even so, the students overwhelmingly enjoyed the game and consistently asked if we could create a version with more social features they could play with all their friends.
So in 2010, Purple Herring was started to create a commercial, worldwide version of AD101 called MyAmericanGame. With the addition of character status, levels, ever-growing content, new college classes and many new social networking features, the game is globally appealing for all ages, both in America and internationally. Our core game mechanic, well written life situations, ten’s of thousands of them, complete the unique experience which drives the game.
Purple Herring has a growing team of veteran programmers, writers, editors and artists.
Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. We have all, at one time or another, worked hard, sacrificed, been resourceful yet still fell short of a goal. The question is whether you gave up or kept trying, despite the odds, of accomplishing your dream.
My dream for the last decade is to leverage the unbelievable potential of the internet, virtual offices, cloud computing and mobile devices to create an ambitious life simulation for everyone, worldwide. Through the efforts of many creative and committed staff members, interns, investors and player feedback, we are almost finished.
Yet in order to really realize the full potential of our unique simulation, we need to make a focused, intense, full-time push to release the game.
Considering many of our staff have full-time employment beyond their work with us, we see this Kickstarter campaign as an opportunity to get everyone together full-time+ to share our reality based game with the world…NOW!
Therefore, rather than continue at our current pace of development (not fast enough), we are asking you for your support so we can share MyAmericanGame with everyone. Obviously, the amount we are asking for will still be highly leveraged to deliver the experience that we all envision, but considering it will be an online social game, we can release additional features over time (based on player demand) after the core simulation goes to beta. So your participation is key to us developing a game, with your support and feedback, that could start a new genre within the gaming industry.
Our approach to rewards is a little different than other video game projects.
We believe that sometimes the best reward in life is our ability to give, to really be part of something meaningful and unique that you can share with others worldwide.
MyAmericanGame will always be free to play for anyone that can get connected to the internet. So our backers are special because, depending on the levels they give, they can share their legacy with the world. Whether it’s a favorite pet, restaurant, travel story or college class, our rewards are about our staff working with you to shape and share that “something special.”
Even at the smallest level of support, you are telling the world (and game publishers too) that this is the type of game worth investing in because sometimes in life we all need a little practice! We believe life is a journey, not a destination, so join us. If you have an idea for a Reward we haven’t offered, please share it with us.
Where else do you get to be “god” for a day (see the $10,000 reward) or enter your small business (the backbone of America) into a life simulation played by millions worldwide? So check out our rewards and make a decision to support us now...
We're excited about this opportunity, and in our long quest to make this worldwide version a reality (which, truth be told, is my American Dream) we have learned that somethings in life are worth risking everything. We are proud of the many lives our game has already touched but our goal has always been to give everyone, worldwide a chance at the American Dream, and maybe in the process, learn a little bit more about ourselves. Keep in touch with us at twitter or write to us directly at Kickstarter@purpleherring.com.
And of course, a huge thanks to our talented staff, understanding families and friends who have supported us on this quest. We couldn't have done it without them.

American Life with simulated immigration opportunities and English language practice for Billions of users worldwide. English is undisputedly becoming the global language for communication. The hundreds of thousands of English language schools around the globe need something cost-effective to differentiate themselves from the school down the street. With MyAmericanGame ever expanding content, we could help.
Whether you are a teenager in America is using their character to experiment with different types of careers within the game to hopefully discover a field that they may be interested in the working.
Or a programmer from India who has just gotten his H-1 VISA to go to work in the United States and wants to prepare for his adjustment to the new, unfamiliar culture of American.
Or a middle aged woman in Malaysia is interested in advancing at her factory job to make more money and she is told that any job with customer contact requires English language skills. So she plays our huge life simulation game where you can experience what it would be like to live in America and learn to read English at the same time!
With social games, the business model is more like an ongoing service with all the costs associated ongoing tech development, ongoing game design, ongoing marketing, ongoing content creation. The key to success is following your metrics and building a game out based on actual play rather than the “instincts of game designers.”
Therefore, your cost is exponentially less to launch a social game but with success, the costs to grow and maintain the product continue throughout its life cycle so that the experience always seem fresh, new and exciting.
