About

The Hawaiian name for farmer is mahi'ai, meaning "food cultivator" and also "strong, energetic." Hawai'i imports more than 80% of its food, affordable housing is in short supply and teaching the people of Hawai'i permaculture skills is more important than ever.

With the Kilauea lava catastrophe taking over 700 homes and thousands of acres of farm and grazing land, we need your help please.

At Mahi'ai Farm we are designing, installing and maintaining sustainable, functional and aesthetically pleasing green and smart homes and landscapes for our farm and the community using permaculture and sustainable practices to designs that mimic natural systems, conserve resources and increase productivity all while adding to the beauty and health of the existing site. We are working on converting the property into a fully functioning permaculture farm. We are growing a variety of tropical fruit and nut trees, perennial and annual vegetables and herbs starting some from organic seeds and others from cuttings as well as micro-greens.

The concept was developed by Joachim Hagemann of Green Architectural Design, a designer of sustainable residential smart homes and Samantha, a landscape architect from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA,(BS) Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning. Environmental Design/Horticulture/Plant, Soil & Insect Sciences.

Please come and join us at Mahi'ai Permaculture Farm in realizing the most empowering, inspiring, and fun way to sustainability and saving our planet. Mahalo!

Located in beautiful Hawaiian Paradise Park and Mountain View. Our WWOOF Program (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) teaches young volunteers from around the world seed starting, grafting, transplanting, harvesting and pruning. WOOFERS will assist installing a drip irrigation system. We are designing and installing a fish pond for aquaponics study and maintenance. WWOOFERS are implementing an edible forest garden using selective clearing and mostly perennial plantings to achieve a low maintenance, high yielding, highly nutritional edible landscape. We are using rainwater harvesting to install drip irrigation lines as well as selective site clearing, sheet mulching, planting, harvesting and general maintenance.
