STRETCH GOALS (READ Update #22 for revised rewards and add-on's)
The 36'' x 24'' poster has a nice summary of some of the most useful Linux commands. Organized as tabs, the poster will have 12 tabs : The first row for file operations, permissions, hot-keys and basic utilities. The second row is for the intermediate Linux user covering regular expressions, sed & awk, VI-editor and shell scripting. The last row is for the advanced users targeting processes, networking & system administration.
Feedback from few friends has helped iron out some typos, but you sure are welcome to help us out, through the campaign ! Keeping up with the spirit of open source, the entire contents of the poster (12 tabs) will be posted in the Updates section. You can read through the content, through the course of the campaign, and comment on necessary typos, useful content you would like to see in the final print of the poster. I cannot promise you that the poster will change based on each backer's comments. Having envisioned an organization for the poster that works for all categories of the command line users (beginner, the power user and the admin) , the poster stays the way it is with respect to organization !
The 8GB USB 2.0 bootable flash drive in a super small form factor (from the highly reputed memory manufacturer, SanDisk) will host Linux Mint (The most popular Ubuntu/Debian based Linux distribution). Just plug in the drive into your USB port of your laptop/desktop, and with minimal keystrokes during boot, get Linux up and running in less than a minute. This setup will give you access to a whole new OS without any installation or hard disk space on your laptop.
Your current OS stays intact ! If you are new to Linux, the cheatsheet poster and this uber-cool flash drive .. should get you ramped up on using Linux in absolutely no time ! The flash drive will work out of the box with majority of the laptops and desktops. The USB flash drive is a branded SanDisk drive with the SanDisk logo. (We will not have any custom labeling for the project, in order to keep the pricing low).
Every backer in the $35+ reward category will have their name show up on the boot screen for having made this project a success ! A small video of the super cool user interface in Linux Mint.
This is how your money will be spent !
The typical cost to print one 36''x24'' poster starts at around $25 and goes down with bulk orders (500+ quantity). Check the pricing for yourself -- Staples ($28), Walgreens ($35), Fedex Kinko($42 @ $7/sq.ft). Having worked out the pricing with the press (contingent upon large volume), the reward priced at $15 is an awesome deal .. including the poster tube and shipping charges. Accounting for the kickstarter & amazon payment processing cut (approximately around 8-10%), the early adopter rewards are priced with minimal margin just to ensure that this project does not get shelved, by not meeting the target amount.
