About this project

The New Hibakusha

(“The New Explosion-Affected People”)

Our Story

My name is Jesse Barrett-Mills, director of The New Hibakusha.

Last March, I was horrified as I watched the tsunami devastate the Tohoku region.  I was even more dismayed when the terrible consequences at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi power plant became clear.  One of the world's worst nuclear disasters was unfolding right before my eyes.

I have teamed up with Brian Higdon, an award-winning filmmaker and producer, to document the issues around Fukushima and beyond.  Our film will focus both on the disastrous effects of radiation and non-proliferation efforts, from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima to the current events of the Fukushima meltdowns, finishing with a discussion about impacts of nuclear proliferation here in the USA.  We recently shot some footage in various locations around Japan, including Minamisoma, Hiroshima, Tokyo, and Omaezaki.  We met many amazing people both on and off camera.

But we need to return to Japan to film more of this unfolding situation.  There are more stories to tell and people to interview.  We cannot complete this film without your help.  We have set a goal of $15,311.11 (in honor of 3/11/11) and we must raise this money in 30 days.  We must make our goal.  Donate today!
