LUMA DICE update

Posted by MIN MENDIS (Creator)

Hi backers,

We are currently in China finishing off production and just running a few weeks behind schedule.

Things are going well, but after our last update we had to make a few modifications.

1. Changed the microcontroller (mini CPU) to a more powerful one. Because of all the extra programmable features the old microcontroller couldn’t handle it. Now our new one can handle a lot more functions!

2. Foam insert – inside each dice is a piece of foam that helps hold the batteries and keep the LED’s in place when rolling.

3. Change the dice to have 2 screws instead of 4 which looks much better!

All modifications have been completed and production has gone into full swing. The first test run has gone through and the results are great.

Our manufacturing timeline -

Next week is a Chinese holiday. So production will continue on May 8th. They will need 2 weeks to finish the flexible circuit boards and add all components. Plus 1 week to add the firmware and test all units.

Once this is done shipping will begin, and this will take place at the end of May. Once shipped it should only take 5-8 days to ship depending on your location.

Other news –

Dice Stand - Each dice set will have 2 dice stands!

Packaging - our designer has come up with this fantastic packaging.

Random fact: 25,000 dice being made, each has 21 LED’s. So we had to buy over half a million RGB LED’s. CRAZY!

Sorry for delay, but we just wanted to make sure LUMA DICE performs perfectly. We will keep you updated on the production process.

Marked my calendar, today was the earliest day projected for delivery. Any more updates? Did you finish the flexible circuit boards? Add the components and firmware? Did the units test ok? Has shipping begun?

Espect deliveries in June. (just read above), still waiting with patience, and its gonna be awesome, once get this toy. It would spice up few boardgames we use to play. =)

      Anybody receive one yet?...

      excited still for these ...
would like to know if the balancing methodology has been answered. both for practical expectation but also because i would imagine its an interesting process to undertake.

Neato. 2 screws better than 4? Seems sort of weird to me; I would have thought the 4 would be more symmetrical and secure. But that's armchair designing: I don't have the actual device. Looking forward to the dice, but take your time and do 'em right. These might seem like some biggish changes for so "late" in the production—but that's how product design and development works! That's how it's supposed to be.

Looking forward to the d20 campaign too... but don't start it until this is done! It's good to show some focus.

I'm getting super excited about this project being fully fulfilled.

Since the shipping date has changed, I'll no longer be where I put my shipping address; is there a way I can change it?

    10. Asim on

Also would like to hear how you are balancing the dice? same methods as Las Vegas Casinos use?

    11. Asim on

take your time. A rush product tot he market is always a bad idea, a quality product to the market sets the strong foot hold for long time :)

Awesome job guys! I am excited to get my dice, a little sad to hear of the delay, but glad you are making sure they are perfect before moving on to production / shipping. Looks like they will be worth the wait :)

@Creator: +1 to Dan's "stupid question". It does look like the balance could potentially be an issue. Have you tested this with the new changes?

    14. Tsveta Koleva - Idle/Wild on

      Damn, looking good.
      And I second Dan's stupid question :)

    15. Patrick SAYET

a friend argued that the dice faces possibly won't be balanced, resulting in some faces (1 and 2 as 6 and 5 would be heavier) coming more often
I'm not sure what screwdriver is used for the tiny screws, is it possible to get some from you, we'll see how I can pay for it?

Thank you for the update. Love the new additions especially the dice stand (yup). Will wait patiently.

Great update thanks for the continued hard work and detailed communication!!

Are we allowed to still upgrade out orders? What's the hard date for that?

    19. Gregg McFarland on

Does the new processor mean there can be more programming? Is it too late to suggest another mode or is the firmware finalized?

      Thanks for the update.
I would like to second @DanHit's question with a slight variation. Wouldn't a piece of foam still allow for a bit of movement of the innards which of course changes the balance of the die as it rolls? Don't the innards need to be rendered immovable so that the weight corrections you made to the surface of the dice are kept relevant?

    21. Patrick Murray on

Awesome! Thanks for the update. :)

    22. Alexander Babanov on

Great call on adding a foam insert!

    23. Forar on

Thank you for the update. Appreciate the pics, and especially the details about the evolution of the product. That kind of 'behind the scenes' info makes up for a lot, and it's awesome to hear that things are proceeding. Looking forward to my dice in June, barring any further snags (but it seems that things are well underway, just being realistic that there's always another snag looming).

    24. James La Bella on

No worries, I can stand a delay that makes the product even better. Great work. Thanks for the update.

Hi, They look great. This is probably a stupid question but with the changes to the CPU, batteries and screws - will the dice still be weighted in a way that makes it still usable. In other words if all the weight is not centered you could roll the same thing all the time and this would be undesirable

    27. Selahattin Ozturk on

Holy schnitzels, this is a good update!

    28. Olivier Corgeron

No worries about a couple of weeks of delays!
Better to have a great product a bit later.
      Looks awesome, btw!

Hey, this is great news! Thanks for more periodical updates, wasn't sure what was going on with the product, but fears alleviated. Also, good job catching stuff before product goes out, I'm sure it saved alot of negative feedback later on!

    30. Old Wookiee on

I've been waiting few months already. So I don't mind wait few more weeks and get better product.

A bit bummed about the delay and just now hearing about this, but glad to be in the loop again. Still looking forward to the D20 campaign.
