What is Anacostia Unplugged?
Anacostia Unplugged is a free, online documentary series about how going outside is saving lives, preserving the environment, and empowering communities along the Anacostia River.
The documentary series will follow the lives of individuals living along the Anacostia River, and show their journey as they connect with the natural environmental along this historically neglected and polluted Watershed. Through their stories, we will begin to understand why we need to reconnect with our natural surroundings, the surprising benefits of being outdoors, and the consequences of our plugged in lifestyles. Viewers will ultimately be challenged to examine how our society's increasingly sedentary and indoor lifestyles are hazardous to our health and quality of life.
Hello! I am Alisha Camacho, the creator of Anacostia Unplugged. This series is a continuation of research that I started while at the George Washington University, where I majored in environmental studies and geography. My extensive background in environmental education is what motivated me to research how going outside is affecting communities along the Anacostia Watershed. What started as a paper gradually transformed into the beginnings of a documentary series.
For the past two years, I have been listening to voices and stories that support the growing research telling us that we need to spend more time outdoors for a variety of psychological, physical, and cognitive reasons. What I did not expect to find was the extent to which being outside is positively affecting communities along the Anacostia Watershed. I was so inspired by the interviews I captured on a borrowed cam-recorder for my paper, and after showing clips to my friends and family and seeing their reactions, I decided that these voices needed to be shared through film.
Something for viewers to keep in mind is that while the stories are centered around the Anancostia Watershed, the themes being addressed are relevant to all of us. A recent study found that the average American child spends on average 4-7 minutes outside a day, and a growing body of evidence is now telling us that going outside is essential to our physical, psychological, and cognitive health and well being. If we are able to show through film how going outside is empowering communities along the Anacostia Watershed to overcome years of social, economical, and environmental injustices⎯ just imagine the possibilities!
Anacostia Unplugged has come a long ways over the past two years, and has garnered the support of individuals and organizations throughout the District. The benefit of doing a documentary series opposed to a single documentary is that it gives us the flexibility to delve into these different stories which each uniquely explain the importance of going outside. Anacostia Unplugged will also act as the platform where different organizations and individuals will collaborate towards a common cause.
Anacostia Unplugged Team:
Anacostia Unplugged Goals:
1. To help viewers understand why they should care about protecting natural landscapes: the disconnection has direct psychological, cognitive, and physical health implications.
2. To address the disconnection between the District's NW quadrant and the Anacostia Watershed by improving the visibility of communities along the Anacostia Watershed.
3. To empower community members and non-profit organizations along the Anacostia Watershed by giving them a resource and outlet, in the form of a documentary series, to spread information about their work and lives.
4. Act as a resource for environmental non-profits, individuals, and policy makers to garner support for their efforts.
5. Support local artists and musicians by incorporating their work throughout the series.
In order to finish Anacostia Unplugged, it is crucial that we raise the $49,569. For the past two years we have worked tirelessly to develop and launch Anacostia Unplugged, and have dedicated every spare moment and dime to help bring this series to life. While we have the support of amazing individuals and organizations, this series deserves and needs a budget to help expand our team and update our equipment. We need your help to bring Anacostia Unplugged to life.
Your contribution will enable us to hire an assistant editor, a team of mixed media artists, and the equipment it takes to obtain higher quality footage and editing. There are so many stories waiting to be told, and with a budget, there would be nothing preventing us from making the commitment to bring these voices to life.
We know that this a lot of money, but we have crunched the numbers over and over again, and have extensively researched how to create a Kickstarter Budget. Please be assured that every single cent has been accounted for, and critically thought about. For more information about how we reached our budget, please check our blog post on our website: www.anacostiaunplugged.com.
Our goal is to finish Anacostia Unplugged, and have it online and screening worldwide by the end of 2016. In order to receive any donation from this campaign, we must reach our minimum budget of $49,595. If we do not reach our goal, all donations will be returned. When you donate, the money is held by STRIPE (the organization that manages the financial aspects of Kickstarter) until our campaign ends on June 30th. The money will then be re-distributed to our fiscal sponsor Groundwork Anacostia upon the campaign's success, or back to you if we do not reach our goal.
The 5013C non-profit Groundwork Anacostia is the official fiscal sponsor for Anacostia Unplugged. Groundwork Anacostia is located in Ward 7 of Washington, DC, and is committed to community development along the Anacostia Watershed through environmental restoration and education. As our fiscal sponsor, Groundwork Anacostia will receive and administer all funds that Anacostia Unplugged will use to carry out the documentary series, and will send all required acknowledgements to donors of tax-deductible contributions. The Board of Directors of Groundwork Anacostia has the final authority concerning fund solicitation and use of the funds received for Anacostia Unplugged. Groundwork Anacostia is one of our strongest partners, and we could not be luckier to have such a passionate and dedicated team by our side! Risks and challenges
After spending the past two years turning a research paper into Anacostia Unplugged, we feel confident that we have the vision, talent, and perseverance to see this project through completion. Everything to date has been done with an old hand held cam-recorder, a more recently purchased Canon Vixia HF G20, borrowed equipment, and most of the editing has taken place on a Macbook '08 with Final Cut Pro (and we were initially told that Final Cut Pro would not work on a Macbook '08). That might sound crazy, but when you believe in something as much as we believe in Anacostia Unplugged, nothing will stop you from turning your dream into a reality.
Therefore, we think it is safe for us to say that the most challenging part has been getting to this point: making the decision to launch Anacostia Unplugged through Kickstarter, and then doing all of the research and preparation work to make it happen. There will be other challenges down the road (as there always are), but we are constantly working together to overcome any and all obstacles in pursuit of transforming the lives of people around our nation, and our world, by changing the way we think of going outside.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
