About this project
What is Spritebox?
Spritebox is a mobile gaming ecosystem for creating and playing games that, with your help, will launch on iPhone and iPad.
The foundation of Spritebox is a mobile app, that provides;
- A system for creating great games on your mobile device, with zero code.
- A community for sharing your games with.
- A platform for playing all the games created by the community.
A system for creating great games on your mobile device, with zero code.
For those who want to take things further;
- A publishing tool. Using a super simple SDK, you can publish games directly to the App Store.
- A development service. Just set up a developer account and Spritebox will build your game and transfer it to you.
- An asset store. Populated with funky content by us and you, such as graphics, audio, animation etc.
Why will the games be great? Well, they will made by actual gamers like you, using a new commercial version of the tools we, Sauce Digital created to build games like Nano Rally, Snow Fight and Microbots. We think this a powerful combination.
The Spritebox app experience begins with a Showcase screen for discovering the latest and best new games created on the Spritebox platform. There will also be other ways to find any games, such and Search and Categories. Players can then and browse these games, and check out further details as they like. Anything that looks interesting can be downloaded, then played straight away.
Playing games is obviously the mainstay of the app, and is super easy. Any game you download will be stored on your device, and can be played instantly via the Spritebox player. Spritebox will simply load up the chosen game and off you go.
Now the really fun bit begins. Within the Spritebox app is a Game Designer, which you can use to create games of any sort. It requires no code and uses a simple interface into advanced graphics, animation and physics engines.
We used this Game Designer to make elements of our games like; Nano Rally, Microbots, Banjo Piranha, Snow Fight and more. It's also capable of making many other games that you are probably familiar with – such as all those awesome Bird related titles.
And all of this is done right there on your iPad or iPhone.
You simply create objects in a library, then add characteristic to them such as graphics, animation, physical properties or behaviours. An animating crystal, a projectile bird or a sword wielding warrior, the choice is yours.
You also create levels, and drop objects from the library them into them. Set up the levels how you would like, and away you go! Levels can also work as supporting screens, such as menus, inventories or info screens.
Objects in a level can be manipulated as the game is played; responding to user interaction, moving, being deleted, added or altered.
Each level, and the game globally, can also have properties and behaviours. This give more options to let you to set up the game just how you want.
You can use graphics and audio from the Asset Store. Alternatively, import your own by dragging them into iTunes, or uploading them to our server where they will then appear on your device.
You can have multiple games in development at one time.
Over time we will add features and components to the Game Designer. These may include helpful tools for simplifying projects, more physical properties or more AI options. So as Spritebox evolves, the games will get better and better.
There will be a few ready made templates available. So you can get going quickly on some classic genres, like an Endless Runner, Tower Defence or Platformer.
When you create a new game you will be able to choose a blank project, or select one of these templates as your starting point. Then customise how it plays, add in graphics and audio, and boom you have a sparkling new game.
You will be able to download graphics and audio packs, to use in the games you create. Alternatively, you can import your own graphics and audio to use in your creations.
Asset packs could be such things as; isometric buildings, pixel blocks or animated characters. As Spritebox grows, so will the assets available for you to use.
In the future we hope to let users share their graphics and audio in the Asset Store, for others to use in their games.
Once you have completed your brand new game, you can share it with the Spritebox community. Simply upload your finished article, and it will be instantly available for people to download.
If we really love your new creation, its quite possible we will promote it on the Showcase screen so many more people can enjoy your gaming goodness.
Now heres the really awesome bit for budding game developers. The will be a super simple SDK available that will make it easy to take your Spritebox game and publish it to the actual App Store. It too requires virtually no code to use, Just download the SDK and your game file, build your app and submit using you own account.
As the games run on iOS, we will also put together a XCODE project for you, together with a walk through of the steps required to get your app in to the App Store!
If you are not interested in the SDK and just want your game in the App Store, Spritebox will also offer a service for this. If you get yourself a developer account, we will build the app for you, and transfer it to your account, ready for you to do with as you wish.
There will also be a supporting website with a forum, tutorials and news.
Why we need your support
Kickstarter is perfect for our cause, here's why:
We want your input. Spritebox will be so much better with influence from real gamers and game designers, Kickstarter is a great way to get that.
We want your games! Spritebox will allow anyone to create a fun, addictive mobile game. And we bet you guys will make some awesome creations with it.
We want it to be great. The more people involved in shaping Spritebox from the start, the better it will be. And we want it to be incredible.
Its a big undertaking, so frankly we need funds for development and design. We will be investing significant funds too, but with your help we can get it out sooner, without compromising quality.
To enjoy the final product, otherwise what's the point!
The first version of the app will be built for iOS, utilising some of Sauce Digital's gaming frameworks that power our current games. Games like Nano Rally and Snow Fight – which both reached top 10 iOS apps in the US and numerous other territories.
Sauce Digital has released over 20 games, with a combined 2 Million plus downloads, and a whopping 220 Million plus plays!
In addition to the several top 10s, we've also had numerous features in the Apple App Store. From inclusion to Staff Picks and What's Hot to inclusion in special features like Popular Puzzlers.
Spritebox as a concept has been bubbling away for some time. But now we think our experience and assets are mature enough to finally make Spritebox, and make it well.
Who is it for, and who should back us?
We are so excited about the potential of Spritebox. It will open up mobile game production to so many more people, who knows what games will be spawned. In short, there will be more games for you to play!
Armchair Game Designers
If you already like making games, or would like to, Spritebox will be a great way to do it. And you will be able to craft your productions at home, on the train or in the queue for the next iPad etc.
If you've always wanted to make a game, but don't code, this is the perfect way to make it happen. Choose a character, select a scrolling background, drag and drop some physics, you get the idea!
App Store lovers
If you've always wanted to get an app into the App Store, but have no clue how, Spritebox is definitely for you. It will make that process super easy, and best of all, your app will be a game!
Sponsors or brands.
Spritebox will also be a great way to reach out to customers, as brands can build a game and share it with the community. They could also purchase slots in the Featured section of the Showcase screen, the result of which could be some fantastic download numbers.
So what might these numbers be? Well, the existing Sauce Digital games have had over 2 Million downloads, with nearly a quarter billion plays. We know this for sure. We estimate Spritebox could get 4 Million app downloads in year one, and if your game is featured on the Showcase screen chances are it will get many millions of plays.
But more importantly, we are talking engaged users here, not people ignoring banners. Moreover, backers will get this at a much lower costs than post release, and many tiers will see us make your game for you and publish it into the App Store too. We think that's something to good to pass up!
There are a variety of pledge tiers, that hopefully offer something for everyone, whether a gamer, designer or sponsor. They include:
Your name in credits
If this project gets funded, you will be able to have a look in the credits in the app and see your name, then sit back know you helped it happen.
Exclusive Forum access
There will be a Spritebox forum exclusive to backers, where we will discuss the project's development. We will post updates here first, so you will be in the know before anyone else. This is also where you will be able to influence what gets created, from which asset packs to make, what the launch games should be, all the way through to features for the SDK.
Spritebox content free
Future updates to Spritebox may introduce paid content. This could be in the form of Asset Packs or Premium Games. We are not sure what they might be yet, but this reward will guarantee that all content will be free, forever.
We will be producing new content for Spritebox on a regular basis, some of which will be exclusive to backers with this reward. This will take the form of Asset Packs, Game Templates or exclusive Spritebox Games
This licence will let you download a packaged up version of your game, and a simple SDK that can build your game as a native iOS app. You can then submit it to the App Store with your developer account. This reward will provide this at a significantly lower price than after launch.
Your game promoted on Spritebox
The app's primary Showcase screen links to a variety of games that have been shared on Spritebox. This page will have several areas, such as Featured, New and Hot. Several different pledge tiers offer placement in the the Featured and Hot sections as a reward, where and for how long will depending on the tier. Slots in the Featured section will cycle between a maximum of 5 games, while Hot will be a scrolling list.
Pre-release Beta Access
We will be producing regular builds of the app prior to launching into the store. This reward gives you access to that. You will be able to play with all the features, give feedback, and get your games ready to go before the app goes live.
Decide Asset Pack content
This reward will let you decide the content of an Asset Pack. If you really want some pixel mushrooms, or isometric farming equipment this reward is for you! Obviously this has to be within reason, no requests for naked people please!
Name a game, and decide the genre
If you want to name a game, and maybe even know the genre it should be, this reward will see it made. So if you want a game called Angry Bert (you being called Bert) you might want to consider this. Once again, we reserve the right to reject content that will get us arrested.
Your game published to the App Store
Now we're talking. Whether you made the game, or we did, this reward will see us publish it to the App Store itself (not just the Spritebox app). We can either release it under the Spritebox account, or if you set up a developer account we transfer it to you to do with as you wish - you could give it away free or start selling it.
Game design and/or development
The pinnacle of the rewards. We will make an awesome game, for you to do with as you wish. We will put it on Spritebox, Promote it in the app and we will also publish it to the App Store. We are pretty sure millions of gamers will see your game in Spritebox, and we all know the potential of the App Store itself.
You will direct the process, and we will do our best to make an awesome game for you using the features available in Spritebox and all the art skills at our disposal.
Where the money is going
Many of the systems Spritebox will use are built, after all we use them! The Kickstarer campaign is to fund fleshing those out, develop a few more required features, then make them easy to use and add content.
To do this we need support for coding, testing and design. Plus the production and purchasing of Asset Packs in the form of graphics and audio.
Spritebox will then become financially self sufficient and be able to roll out more assets and deploy to more platforms.
The backer's rewards will remain, on all platforms, forever.
The future is bright if this campaign succeeds. We would like to start by adding in more games and Asset Packs, to enrich the Spritebox world.
Next up will be new platforms. This will start with Android, then possibly Windows Phone, Mac, PC and Web. Opening it up will mean more games for everyone!
Then possibly paid assets (free for some backers, see rewards). We are also considering adding a publishing and payment system to the Asset Store, where anyone can upload their work for other people to use. Most of the with proceeds would go to the creatives that upload the goodies, which will hopefully mean more assets to play with!
When will Spritebox be released?
If the campaign is successful, the first Alpha should be within 12 weeks, and general release version 1.0 should be 6 months.
What does the money go towards?
coding, testing, design and Asset Packs.
- Secondarily; Kickstarter fees and reward fulfilment.
Why only iOS?
We want to make Spritebox awesome, and starting with one platform should ensure this. We also want the best chance of funding, so it will help keep our goal low.
We know iOS – Sauce Digital has over 10 successful titles on this platform, including a couple of top 10s. They were created using some of the tech that Spritebox will utilise, so this is the sensible place to start. Other platforms, such as Android, can be funded by the success of iOS.
Will it launch on other platforms?
We really hope so! iOS and the Apple ecosystem offers a great way to get Spritebox of the ground, and we know it inside out. We really hope that the Android version will follow soon after, and the number of great games available increases even more!
Spritebox is designed for mobile, so Windows Phone could be after that. But that's not to say other platforms like PC and Mac are not possible – if we get that far we will probably be asking you what you want!
Can I use it to release games into the App Store?
Absolutely. There will be a couple of ways to do this. The main one being; Design your game on your device, download your game and the SDK, build your final app and submit it. We will also offer a service to release it for you.
Will there be new Sauce Digital games on Spritebox?
YES! We are super excited about our games mingling with yours in the Spritebox world!
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk is that we don’t deliver on time, but we are pretty sure we've got our estimates right. We have also made many apps, so know how this magical code and art stuff works and how long it takes.
There is also a risk that Apple rejects the app. However, this is extremely unlikely and we can probably tweak a few things at their request to get it into the store. We have contacts at Apple, and the first thing we will do after successful campaign to get them to take a look at the concept to give us any tips before we start – but historically we’ve always been fine and they usually just say “We can't wait to play it!”
For backers who pledged at a tier that includes promotion, we will endeavour to do this at a time to suit you, however this may not always be possible.
There is a risk that download numbers mentioned are not reached. We really think they are possible, however they are only estimated and we cant guarantee them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
