I am a bioartist who has invented a method to literally grow photographs in bacteria. Now it's time to have a show!

Think Bacteriography is awesome? Want to see it in person and have a chance to own a piece? Then spread the word, the city that pledges the highest amount to this project will be rewarded with a bacteriograph exhibition!!

Just in case you didn't partake in the riveting edge-of-your-seat experience that is my KickStarter video, here are the basics.

What My Work is About: I believe that the dichotomy often imposed on the fields of art and science is extremely limiting to both areas of study. I create visual art that is about deeply exploring the beauty and poetry that reside in scientific theories. My methods are often a fusion of contemporary artistic and modern scientific practices. By working under the umbrella of art, I am enjoying a more free reign environment in which I can investigate my enchantment with science. Ultimately, I strive to create art that allows me to share my wonderment of the process of scientific study and my sense of awe of the discoveries that have been made using this process with others. In doing so, I also hope to contribute to increasing the dialogue between Artists, Scientists and their respective audiences.

What I've done so far: During my masters of fine art research, I invented a method to grow photographs in bacteria. The process has been dubbed Bacteriography. I have also come up with a way to then preserve these petri dishes of bacteria so they will be safe for display and will stand the test of time (see images below)

The Project: To create and preserve several new bacteriograph works to be shown at the ArtPrize exhibition in Grand Rapids, Michigan this September. This project will bring the works out of the lab and into galleries.

*UPDATE* I am working on securing another venue or two, if this project is made successful it could mean these works will be featured in multiple exhibitions, in multiple cities. But first we need to make the project a success!

Why I'm on Kickstarter: Having just finished graduate school some of the resources that are required to make bacteriographs are no longer at my disposal. Without a Kickstart, I will not have the funding to create the works for the show and this new and exciting medium could very well disappear.

Why You Should Consider Backing this Project:  I created a new artistic medium and now it is time to explore the unique voice and power of this medium. Bacteriography is only in its infancy. The process has huge potential that I have only begun to tap into. I foresee using bacteriography to further investigate a couple of issues. The first being that of the symbiosis between humans and bacteria. More specifically, how bacteria can be used to better understand humanity as an organism connected biologically to a living breathing ecosystem. And secondly, to highlight the seemingly bi-polar relationship we have with bacteria. We take antibiotics as though they are candy and we over sanitize ourselves to the point of getting sick. Then we seek out probiotics to replace the bacteria we killed. This second issue is particularly timely considering all of the recent new hype surrounding superbugs.

By backing this project you will help me to ensure that this innovative and timely artistic medium doesn't meet an untimely demise. This is a chance to be part of the beginning of a process that will most likely go down in art history textbooks.

Also, the rewards are awesome!!

*UPDATE* New reward added in honor of this project being featured on Mashable! A signed and editioned custom designed bottle of hand sanitizer for a mere $35 pledge!!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Time is the main challenge involved with this project. Due to the time it takes just to make a negative and then grow the image, getting the perfect bacteriograph can take about a month. Remember, I'm growing images in a living medium. The results are always somewhat unpredictable. Usually, I must make several versions of a bacteriograph to get one that is acceptable for display or sale. Then comes the preservation process which is even more time consuming and also very temperamental.
