Everyone knows you are not supposed to not change jobs, location and marital status at the same time. I did all three and discovered artistic freedom, renewed sexuality and a gift for encouraging young people's self-expression while living six thousand miles from my native New York City.
Against the backdrop of the New South Africa I created Brown Paper Studio.
What is it?
Ten years after the end of apartheid South Africa is in a self-described state of ‘Transformation’ and Cape Town offers the ideal atmosphere for an educational theatre project devoted to social change. Brown Paper Studio connects people first to themselves and then to each other and the use of simple theatre practices grows into a way of life for the youth who participate. They ultimately form a creative community that continues to thrive to this day.
At the heart of my story is an unlikely love affair with a Congolese man, a refugee twenty years younger; a person displaced by war “existing in the margins of the outskirts on the edge.”
Through it all I must balance the needs of my family in the States with my passion to realize Brown Paper Studio and my desire to maintain a challenging romance.
My manuscript is complete and ready for your pledge to make it happen.
Three quarters of the of the money raised goes directly to indie book publishing costs; set-up fees, copy editing, printing and shipping. As it's always important to "pay your people" remaining funds go to my brilliant collaborators; a magnificent editor/midwife, a fabulous videographer and a splendid book designer (check out more about all three in the FAQ section below).
How does the wonderful Kickstarter system work?
Choose an incentive and pledge amount and hit the green button ‘Back This Project’. Once you're a backer we'll keep you updated on our success.
How is my pledge acknowledged?
All award levels are acknowledged in our facebook 'thank you' shout outs. If you wish to remain anonymous, just let us know and we can keep our thanks private.
If I donate, when can I redeem the incentive?
All incentives, large and small, happen when our fundraising goal is met and the time scheduled for the campaign is complete.
Can we exceed the goal?
YES! Any funds raised over the amount will allow us to produce more books, broaden our book tour network and increase visibility for Brown Paper Studio's work with public education.
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
It's all or nothing. We either reach our "triple five soul" figure by the deadline or no money changes hands and we go back to the fundraising drawing board.
Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?
YES! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward by increasing your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green ‘Back This Project’ button has been replaced with a blue ‘Manage Your Donation’ button. Click it and you can enter a new amount or choose a new incentive. Your enthusiasm is greatly appreciated.
Brown Paper Studio already exists as a movement. Your pledge makes it known.
For the Feeling: Love & Transformation from New York to Cape Town mobilizes the creative energy of a decade of work into a format that can be shared internationally.
One of the most rewarding aspects for everyone involved with this Kickstarter campaign is re-connecting the global company of Brown Paper folks and identifying our new friends…people committed to the big heartfelt principles of Freedom, Art and Unity.
