This Kickstarter project is wrapping up. Did you miss it? Check out PoleClinometer.com for what's in the works for future seasons.
Knowing slope angle is a critical factor in assessing avalanche hazard. PoleClinometer is the quickest/easiest way to get “on the go” slope angle measurements. It's a sticker you put on your ski pole that lets you measure slope angle by line-of-sight.
There are two basic ways to use PoleClinometer:
Either way it's fast and easy to get an accurate measure of slope angle. The handy color coding helps you quickly identify slope angles that are more prone to avalanche.
Check out the Use Instructions for a detailed explanation of how to use it.
PoleClinometer will fit the vast majority of ski poles available today. There are some exceptions, so check the Fit Page just to be certain, but odds are it'll work with what you have.
Stickers tend to get shredded by ski edges and such. But PoleClinometer comes with a burly crystal clear "heat-shrink" over-wrap sleeve to protect your sticker and make it uber-tough. Both the over-wrap and the sticker itself are waterproof and UV-resistant. Don't be surprised if your PoleClinometer out-lasts your ski poles!
Designed by an engineer and an avid backcountry skier, PoleClinometer prototypes have been lab-tested against reference instruments, and ski-tested from high alpine to local glades. The overall design has proved sound, and I've refined some details of the final product to improve things like durability and ease of use. What you'll get is a well-proven high-quality product.
Complete installation kit includes:
(three sizes to fit all standard pole shaft diameters)
Clear Protective Skin
(ultra-durable heat-shrink over-wrap protection)
(to clean your dirty ski pole before applying sticker)

Every backer gets a kit!
I've already fulfilled all the "early-bird" reward options! Great news for the early-birds sure, but also great news for the rest of you for two reasons:
- I've already worked through one (mini) fulfillment process, so things should run like clockwork when it comes time for me to fulfill the rest of your rewards in February.
- And there are now more than 130 PoleClinometer kits in the field! So if there are any issues at all with product quality or usability, I'm sure I'll hear about them while I still have time to make tweaks to the kit or documentation.
Feedback from the early-birds has been great so far. Keep it coming y'all (positive or negative), and I'll change what I can if there are any issues at all.

Risks and challenges
One challenge I've put a lot of effort into from the start is making PoleClinometer easy to understand and work with. I've developed clear easy-to-follow instructions for both installation and use, and made them available on the PoleClinometer website along with some detailed FAQs and other information. The instructions will also be included on a printed sheet with each kit.
I've done as much as possible ahead of time specifically to reduce risk. I've thoroughly tested PoleClinometer for accuracy, usability, and durability. I've found reliable sources for all the kit materials, including the custom printed vinyl stickers. After all the development/prototyping/testing/tweaking/etc I settled on a final design and pre-ordered materials for the early-bird rewards, which I've now already fulfilled (see above). So I'm confident everything is ready to roll for procuring, assembling, and shipping the remaining rewards. You can rest assured your PoleClinometer kit(s) will be delivered in a timely fashion if you back my project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
