Welcome to Eliot's Adult Nut Butters' Kickstarter. We are making bolder nut butters that bring complex grown up flavors to a classic food item. Peanut butter has never tasted this adult. Your help will allows us to grow as a company, so we can keep spreading these amazing savory flavors. Like any proud parent we love our nut butters, but we aren't the only ones. We were just chosen to take part in Bon Appetit's Feast Portland 2014 food festival and have gotten a few nice reviews in local media:
The Oregonian: "while the list of ingredients wasn't long, the spicy flavors lingered"
Portland Monthly: "a nutty spread with lemongrass and cayenne"
Free-Range Quest: "a simple, locally-made treat — and it blew our minds."
In the beginning...
My name is Michael Kanter and I am the founder of Eliot's Adult Nut Butters. The story of this company began in my home kitchen in the Eliot neighborhood of Portland this past July. Sitting upstairs at my computer snacking on some spicy Thai cashews, a light bulb went off. I was thinking that darn these savory cashews are delicious! Boy, do I love these things. But what if...I turned them into a nut butter!?!
Well I headed straight to the kitchen, tossed the bag of cashews in the food processor and the concept of Eliot's Adult Nut Butters was born. I started experimenting with different nuts. Almonds. Cashews. Sunflower seeds. Peanuts. All kinds of flavors. I started sharing them with my friends and everyone loved them. By November I had narrowed down to three flavors that were consistent favorites, and had gotten into two holiday craft shows in Seattle(Urban Craft Uprising) and Portland(Crafty Wonderland).
Taking part in these shows was an incredible experience seeing people's faces light up and the positive visceral reactions to tasting our nut butters. A couple of people even bought jars as gifts and were back the next day because they had already opened their jars and had no gift left to give. We even sold out of our Garam Masala Peanut Butter at the Crafty Wonderland show in Portland.
Based off of this positive momentum we kept on rolling. Bowery Bagels in Portland put our jars on it's shelves and bagels. New Seasons Market started to stock all three flavors in six stores. World Foods in Portland placed an order. And now several Portland area Whole Foods are interested.
It has been incredibly rewarding running Eliot's Adult Nut Butters myself, with a little help from friends and a ton of help from my fiancee, Laura. But she is a full time nurse and with a growing number of orders we are always concerned with having supplies and inventory on hand to fill orders when they come in. Your contribution will truly help kick start our company.
The money from this campaign will allow us to place bigger orders for important supplies, like peanuts, and will allow us to keep pace with our growing demand. We are proud to source all of our peanuts from American peanut farms(Ours are from North Carolina). This means we get fresher peanuts that haven't been sitting on ships, sailing across the ocean to get here. And the Kickstarter funds will also allow us to place larger orders, which brings down the cost and helps us make sure we continue to maintain the quality that people love at a fair price.
The funds will also give us the breathing room to continue to grow and explore new amazing flavors and types of nut butters. Reaching our goal of $10,000 will be an amazing achievement. If we are able to reach above and beyond there are even more exciting and tangible ways to rapidly accelerate some of our most exciting future plans(Harissa Cashew Butter? Spicy Sunflower Butter?). Your contribution large or small stands to make a significant impact in moving the new and exciting brand of Eliot's Adult Nut Butters forward. Plus if we manage to reach some of our stretch goals, everyone will get bigger rewards!
Oh the possibilities...
At our core, we are a small batch company trying to get our high quality nut butters to as many people as possible. Our three flavors, Spicy Thai Peanut Butter, Garam Masala Peanut Butter and Honey Chipotle Peanut Butter, are produced with their own distinct recipes that can't be beat. Our nut butters will not only make the best PB&J you have ever had, but they will take some of your favorite recipes to bold new places.
I believe we have just scratched the surface of what we are capable of achieving. We want to expand into other nuts and truly embrace the name of our company, Eliot's Adult Nut Butters. I want our company to create incredibly delicious products that are part of the solution in building a better and tastier world.
By contributing right now, you will truly help propel us to new heights. No matter what you can give we will be most grateful. Even liking us on facebook, following us on twitter or instagram and signing up on our email list will help immensely. Help us to reach as many people as possible and have the greatest chance to succeed!
Thank you for reading through and helping a small company reach new heights!

Risks and challenges
Growing a business in the food world has many challenges. The cost of ingredients can fluctuate based on the weather, crop yields, supply and demand. Making sure we can always deliver a consistently delicious product at a reasonable price while covering our costs is a constant challenge.
Expanding into stores locally and nationally has its own sets of challenges. Many larger stores prefer you to distribute through a larger company. This means more hands involved and can cause us to lose money despite selling it to more people. Finding ways to expand our reach while not compromising on quality and price will be tough. Having said that, I am committed to growing this as organically as possible and refuse to compromise on taste and quality.
Ultimately in the short term, there is a limit to how much we can produce in order to meet demand. Being so new and small we are always in danger of having a sudden increase in demand that we cannot meet. Luckily I have many strategies in place to cope with this good "problem" and the goal of this kickstarter is to better position us for the coming demand of stores like Whole Foods.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
