About

Getting to 1 million acres of restored pollinator habitat will not happen quickly, easily, or without cost or effort.  Pollination services from native bees, wasps, butterflies, and flies, though often overlooked, are essential for our food supply and environment.

Our native pollinators are in serious trouble around the world and need our help now!  We can all do our part to restore the acres lost over time.

Pollinator Patches are specialized pollinator seed mix designed to provide optimal floral resources and diversity for our native pollinators.

www.PollinatorPatch.com

The Pollinator Patch concept is three fold:

NATIVE POLLINATOR-OPTIMIZED SEED MIXES

Pollinator Patches are native-pollinator optimized seed mixes offered in five sizes: (1,000 sq. ft./4,000 sq. ft./.25 acre/.5 acre/and 1 acre patches) perfect for small city yards, suburban yards, pastures, meadows, and large acreages.  They are shipped directly to the consumer and will soon be offered in garden and home improvement stores.

POLLINATOR PATCH MAP & PATCH TAGS

Pollinator Patches are measured and quantified on our Patch Map.  This interactive Patch Map allows users to plant their unique Patch Tag found in their seed bag.  Patch Tags can be later updated with pictures of pollinators at work, or floral resources in bloom.

GLOBAL PATCH NETWORK

Pollinator Patch Global Network is a global conservation network with the capability to restore, protect, and enhance pollination networks between plants and animals, and extends beyond individual species conservation to a more interconnected, landscape level, conservation paradigm.  This will be a non-profit venture with the goal to purchase permanent conservation easements for pollinator refuges.

I am seeking $50,000 in start-up capital to get a full web-site built, purchase seed bags, patch tags, marking flags, and cover shipping.  The margins and pricing model make hitting 1 million patches an initial three year goal.  Since Pollinator Patches come in sizes less than one acre, it will likely take 10 years to reach the full 1 million acre goal.

It all starts with your pledge to get my project off the ground.  This is something I am truly passionate about and feel we that we all need to do more to address the serious global pollinator decline.

Sincerely,

Ben Reynard

Risks and challenges

I have run the numbers on the price points of $30, $100, $200, $500, and $1000 and believe that those prices will attract from multiple market segments.

I am using an average cost per acre of seed of $538. Weight and Volume calculations indicate most Pollinator Patches could ship for between $11-19.

A good website will likely be between $10,000 and $20,000 and will need to be able to support the Patch Tag Program and host uploaded Patch Tag photos.

I need to develop a good shipping system for the seed bags that will also incorporate the unique Patch Tags.

I need to create and purchase the marking flags.

This business model can get off the ground for 50,000 and be able to generate positive cash flow to reinvest towards the ultimate goal of 1 million acres, one back yard patch at a time.
