Hello! My name is Gustaf Fjelstrom and I’m an artist/musician/producer from San Jose, CA. I make instrumental music in the ambient / post rock / electronic genre—heavy on the bass guitar. I’ve been recording my own music since 2009 and have released two full-length albums, two eps, and a handful of singles and remixes. You can check out my entire discography at gustaffjelstrommusic.com or my Bandcamp page.
Also: I released an EP last year (DIAMETRIC) which is available for FREE (pay what you want)—I'd consider it a pretty good precursor to the new album.
WHAT AM I MAKING?
My latest album is titled THE PERIPHERAL ARC: VOLUME 1. It's DONE. Mixed, mastered, and ready to go. I’ll be releasing it on Digital, Compact Disc, and—with your help... VINYL.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
I’m picking up where my last full-length release, INTENTION, left off. I’m continuing the trajectory of some of the higher energy moments, while delving deeper into the realms of ambient bass guitar, analog synths, and lush, etherial textures (and of course, massive regular bass!). Live drums were performed by Mike Reppucci and vocal textures were provided by Jessica Thompson. The album features 8 tracks specifically designed and sequenced with a vinyl release in mind. I finished mixing the album in March, and mastering was completed by Brian Lucey at Magic Garden Mastering.
Digital distribution has changed the music landscape drastically, so why go back to such an arcane format as vinyl? This isn’t an argument about which sounds better, vinyl or digital. No doubt, it is insanely convenient to have my entire music collection available at my fingertips on my iPod, but downloading an album is just one type of experience. Investing in an actual physical artifact—something tangible and tactile—is another.
I remember when I was first awakening to music—sitting on the floor listening intently in headphones to all my RUSH albums—pouring over every inch of the jacket and liner notes.
There was just something about the size of the artwork, the feel of the paper and printing, the scent of the vinyl. That’s what I wanted to experience again. And that’s what I’d like to share with you.
As for CDs—some people still like buying CDs! They’re far less expensive to produce than vinyl… so its included as an option.
I released my previous album INTENTION on vinyl and was very pleased with the results. I’m going the crowdsourcing route this time to better gauge the demand and to secure the financing upfront. Let’s be clear. Making and releasing music these days has never been easier or cheaper. With the most modest of budgets, anyone can record their own music and publish it worldwide in just a few clicks. When you’re dealing with physical products, however, there lies the initial barrier of manufacturing costs. As a completely independent musician, this proposes its own challenges—hence the Kickstarter campaign.
The funding for this project is set at $3000. (Okay, to be precise, the total budget is actually $3,015.04, but heck, I'll cover the first $15.04). This covers the vinyl pressing, CD duplication, rewards, the Kickstarter fees, and the payment processing fees. That’s it.
You aren’t footing the bill for the entire music production: the gear, the mixing, the mastering, the artwork—that’s all on me. I would just like your help getting this album onto vinyl and into your hands.
WHAT WILL BE PRODUCED?
We’ll be producing 250 copies of the album on 12” black vinyl with full-color center labels. We’re going with black paper poly-lined inner sleeves inserted in a heavyweight 350gsm matte-laminated jacket. The CD version will have a one page insert, tray card, and full-color disc in a jewel case. All pledges for CD and Vinyl will include a free digital download of the album.
All reward tiers will include an exclusive Kickstarter-only reward. These items will be available ONLY to Kickstarter backers and will not be available anywhere else.
- Laptop Sticker: Pretty self-explanatory here. Just a cool sticker for your... um, laptop.
- Postcard Pack: Exclusive designs from yours truly reflecting some unique design elements from the Peripheral Arc album artwork.
- Poster: Similar to a postcard, just poster-sized.
- T-Shirt: (Details forthcoming)
- Test Pressing: As part of the vinyl production process, test pressing are produced to make sure everything is on target. Only 5 will be produced, 4 of which will be available as rewards.
- Album Credit: Want to see your name in lights? And by lights I mean tiny little letters printed on the album itself.
In addition to the Kickstarter rewards, all backers will receive the Digital Single—a special pre-release to be delivered well in advance of the album street date.
Also... a little bird told me that upon successful funding, all backers just MAY get the full album digital download right away!
This Kickstarter campaign will run for 21 days. Upon successful completion, the manufacturing order will be placed. Current turnaround times for the vinyl pressing is 8 weeks. I’ve given a conservative estimate of September 2017 but if the records are complete ahead of schedule, they’ll be shipped out early. September will remain the official release date for all the “regular” people.
The one drawback with this whole vinyl thing is the shipping. Vinyl is expensive to ship, especially internationally. The vinyl will be shipped via USPS media mail in the US. Unfortunately, there’s no media mail option for shipping internationally, so the shipping costs will be a little higher. The vinyls will be shipped in sturdy cardboard mailers offering ample protection. The shipping costs will be added to your pledge amount.
