FINALLY! A MORMON SUPERHERO! OH, AND HE'S GAY!
Eight Page Preview of STRIPLING WARRIOR is now live on THE ADVOCATE: http://www.advocate.com/arts-entertainment/geek/2015/04/09/photos-are-you-ready-worlds-first-gay-mormon-superhero
STRIPLING WARRIOR is an exciting and fun new comic book about the world's first Gay Mormon Superhero. By donating to this Kickstarter campaign you will not only receive awesome, exclusive rewards but you might just be helping to make comic book history! (I hope!)
MORE ABOUT STRIPLING WARRIOR
Stripling Warrior stars Sam Shepard, a happily out and newly married gay man who is visited by an Angel from Heaven on his wedding night. The Angel Abish - a rare female named character from the Book of Mormon - calls Sam to become the Hand of God on Earth, tasked with smiting those in need of smiting.
Why was he
chosen? How does his homosexuality impact his role as a servant of the
divine? And how does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints react when they hear of a
homosexual man on a mission from the heavens? (*hint* Not great.)
Stripling Warrior will explore all of this. The comic is a sexy story without being XXX-Sexy (not that there is anything wrong with XXX Gay Comics). This book isn't just about a gay superhero who's gay in name only. Sam’s romantic life will be prominently featured along with plenty of fisticuffs, humor, an exploration into the mythology of the LDS Church, and of course, heroic banter and super villains.
SECOND GOAL ACHIEVED! WOOT!
With 20 hours to go I'll update the rewards as everyone who has pledged $25 and over will receive the third issue of STRIPLING WARRIOR!
FIRST GOAL ACHIEVED! LET'S CELEBRATE EVERYONE!
Wahoo! First goal achieved! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Now can we make it to the first stretch goal of $8k and get the first three issues created and printed?!? Fingers crossed! And much love!
Enjoy this uber cute image my artist James did of Sam hugging me. Dreams do come true!
DO YOU NEED TO BE MORMON AND GAY TO READ THIS?
Nope! STRIPLING WARRIOR is a comic I'm aiming to make accessible to everyone. You only need to be able to enjoy an engaging story with amazing artwork.
Ultimately, I'm hoping to tell a compelling story about an everyday guy who just happens to be given a powerful responsibility.
I'm also exploring the idea of religion through the lens of homosexuality. Does it mean a person is no longer righteous, good, or worthy because he has same-sex relationships? I say thee nay!
As a gay Mormon myself I also wanted to address the fact that I am not less-than anyone else in the Mormon Church or any other church. I am just as equal and worthy of respect and love as anyone else, regardless of a person's religious beliefs.
I want to read about an out, happy, homosexual superhero who isn't ashamed to be who he is. Do you?
We reached out first $5000 goal and are now close to making it to the $8000 stretch goal! Yay!
The initial $5000 goal will go towards both my amazing artist James Neish's work on the second issue of the series as well as to printing the first two issues.
In the past comic book work my amazing artists have lowered their standard rate to work me (I'm so grateful to them). For this book I want James to enjoy his well-deserved page rate.
Ideally I envision the first story arch in Stripling Warrior as a six issue series, which I like to call it's first season. Then, depending on the reception, I will proceed into future seasons of the comic.
NEW CHARACTER EXCLUSIVE REVEAL
Since we arrived at our $5,000 goal I've will release the exclusive design for a NEW Stripling Warrior's character. A superhero companion for the Stripling Warrior. Sam's companion will debut in issue two. As many people know Mormon Missionaries go forth in twos. Sam will find he too will have a companion by his side...whether he likes it or not.
- $8000 - Issue three confirmed! Issues 1, 2, and 3 printed.
- $11,000 - Issue four confirmed! Issues 1-4 printed.
- $15,000 - Success! Six issue season one confirmed and printed!
- $20,000 - All of the above PLUS I will fly an international famed cosplayer out to San Diego Comic Con to cosplay as the Stripling Warrior! More on him later. I will also fly out my artist James Neish to sign comics at Comic Con!
- $25,000 - Six issue trade collection unlocked and confirmed, plus all of the above!
- $26k and above - I will print more comics under my So Super Duper Comics banner. See below for preview art.

ABOUT THE CREATOR(s)
Brian Andersen is a life-long geek who's created comics ever since he was a young, skinny, four-eyed goober in middle school. He's also an out, gay Mormon. He joined the Mormon Church at 18, went on a mission at 19, attended Brigham Young University at 26 and came out and accepted his gayness at 27. He's married, to a fellow Mormon, and they have a lovely one-year-old daughter.
Brian's created and written a popular line of queer indie comics since 2007, with over six titles and counting under his So Super Duper Comics banner. He's been on numerous LGBT panels at Comic Con and delights that he is a part of the queer, underground comics world. For more on So Super Duper Comics: www.sosuperduper.com
Brian’s beyond thrilled to have the artistic talents of James Neish as part of his creative team for Stripling Warrior. More on the amazing James here: https://www.facebook.com/JamesNeishIllustrator
Risks and challenges
COMIC BOOK CREATING WISE: None! This is my second Kickstarter and I delivered on all the rewards and created both comics projects as promised in my previous campaign three years ago.
This will be my seventh title under my So Super Duper Comics indie comic book print company.
PERSONAL LIFE WISE: Possible excommunication from the LDS Church. Possibly offending and losing many Mormon friends. Although I hope they understand no offense is intended with this comic. Despite the potential risks I know this is a story who's time has come. I'm ready to accept the potential backlash in order to bring STRIPLING WARRIOR to light.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
