But why beer hot sauce? I grew up in Portland, Oregon, the craft beer capital of the world, and I LOVE spicy food. When I go out for hot wings I always calm my tongue with something from the tap. We all love beer, and they obviously go well together. While talking with friends the question came up, “Why hasn’t anyone combined these flavors?” I immediately went home and made some beer hot sauces, and after dozens of tries I finally figured it out.
I called up Plank Town and brought them my creation. After tasting the sauce they were super excited when I asked if I could let the world know it was their amazing UnObtainium Double IPA that makes it taste so great. So here we are, trying to see if there is enough interest in a beer based hot sauce to give it a go.
FYM Plank Town IPA Hot Sauce is the newest addition to the FYM family, and the world's first IPA hot sauce. For people that like spicy food, hot sauces are an eating staple. Hot sauce can give any food that extra bit of flavor that makes it taste a million times better. Any boring meal can be instantly transformed into amazing with just a couple drops. The best part is that FYM sauces are made with fresh, quality ingredients that make them a healthy additive to any diet.
FYM Plank Town IPA Hot Sauce is non-alcoholic. Despite containing bright IPA flavor, all of the alcohol has been cooked out. This leaves you with a great FLAVORFUL heat and like the other FYM sauces, it doesn’t linger.

FYM Hot Sauce started from a small backyard garden. At the end of the growing season I ended up with a bunch of peppers and had no idea what to do with them. I did what any normal person would do and decided to make hot sauce and my life hasn't been the same since. After running out of sauce in one month, I quickly decided that I would grow more peppers and make a bigger batch the following year.
When people started tasting FYM I started running out again and couldn't keep up with my friend's and family's demands. I originally set out to only sell enough that I could make it through the year without running out again, but the demand was too great.
I sent out thousands of samples and posted a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. Since my last campaign I have been working like crazy to get hot sauce into stores. After more than a year of back and forth I recently got my Original and Green sauces into a growing Northwest Grocery store called New Seasons. I go to many events like the State Fair, hot sauce festivals, and have been at several farmers markets. I spend a lot of time sampling hot sauce to customers at New Seasons stores to spread awareness as well. I am working really hard now to get it into more stores for easier access.
Brewmaster Steve van Rossem moved to the Pacific Northwest nearly 25 years ago where he started brewing at McMenemins Edgefield. Steve moved on to West Bros. BBQ and created two award-winning brews for the Great American Beer Festival. He went on to help start up Block 15 in Corvallis where he played an integral role in producing an eclectic & wildly successful lineup of beers before bringing his considerable talents back home to Plank Town.

No one wants to purchase a food product over the internet without seeing how it tastes first. I recently sampled my new sauces at the First Annual Portland Hot Sauce Expo and got some feedback. These hundreds of people will assure you it is AMAZING!
As many of you know I shanghaied my family for the last Kickstarter to help me pack up everything to get it shipped out.
While they would do it again if I asked them because they are awesome, I don't feel right asking them to donate hundreds of hours of their lives again. They all have jobs and did more than enough the last time.
For this campaign I am going to work with Portland Habilitation Center to help me fulfill this campaign. PHC is a non-profit organization that helps train and employ persons with disabilities that want jobs. For over 60 years Portland Habilitation Center Northwest has been proud to offer broad-based educational training and job opportunities to countless individuals with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities.
They are a great organization and it gives everyone that funds this Kickstarter a unique opportunity to help out in the community. Making a difference is important to me and this is a way we can all help out.
The future of this hot sauce is uncertain. This hot sauce is an FYM creation. Everyone at Plank Town loves the sauces, but the market is unproven.
Plank Town does not have a financial stake in this product other than that I am purchasing the beer from them. They have agreed to let me use their name and product for the Kickstarter. While Plank Town loves this sauce, they are growing too rapidly to try expanding away from beer and into mass food production. If the Kickstarter is a success, we will work out a licensing deal so I can continue to produce this hot sauce.
That is why I need your help. It cost's a lot of money to get the approvals and buy inventory for a new product. And since I have started shipping out to stores I have to be able to afford product up front, and get paid later. Creating a new product and purchasing inventory is not an option to me at this time without Kickstarter. The fate of this new sauce is in your hands.
Risks and challenges
As backers from my last campaign know, there are risks and challenges with huge projects.
One of the biggest challenges we ran into last time was production delays. When I first started we had issues with lids being unavailable. We also had challenges when trying to produce the hot sauce in bulk. Since then, we have streamlined our processes and found a manufacturer for custom lids and bottles.
Shipping is also an issue, as mailing thousands of bottles of hot sauce takes a lot of time. As mentioned above, I am working with Portland Habilitation Center to make sure it gets done in a timely fashion. This will make the packaging and shipping process more efficient and it helps the community at the same time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
