Raven + Lily is a socially-conscious lifestyle brand dedicated to empowering women through design.
OUR KENYA PROJECT
We help employ at-risk women around the world to make our fair trade collections of jewelry, clothing, and accessories. Right now we’re already working with artisans in Ethiopia, India, and Cambodia. We want to expand our collection by launching a new partnership in Kenya with the Maasai women from the Esiteti community, but we need your help! They have incredible beadwork skills to make jewelry like the bangle designs we developed with them for this Kickstarter Campaign. They have amazing skills, but lack experience with modern designs and access to the Western market, which is exactly why Raven + Lily was created.
We have seen women’s lives changed as a result of the employment they receive through our partnerships. Because we work with women coming out of challenging circumstances, a job is so much more than a wage. Specifically these Maasai women have helped to eradicate FGM (female genital mutilation) from their community, and they are the first generation to send girls to school. The women have collectively decided to send 50% of all the money received from our orders to fund the education of their children at the Esiteti Primary School. And we are inviting you to be part of creating this change.
THE $30,000 FUND-RAISE
The money we are raising will help cover the project set up, design work, marketing, and initial inventory costs. It takes a lot of resources to launch a partnership like this, but the good news is - once it gets started it becomes sustainable. We need Kickstarter's help to get it off the ground!
As a thank you to our Kickstarter supporters, we have some great products to offer, so you can be the first to wear our Spring 2014 collection! Plus, our rewards immediately help employ our artisans! Check them out:

Risks and challenges
Raven + Lily has been working with artisan groups for the past several years and has successfully launched 5 different partnerships. We believe that with help from our Kickstarter supporters we will only increase our ability to successfully launch this new group in Kenya. There are always challenges that come with working in developing countries, and we are familiar with the pains and joys of working with at-risk women across the world. These are some of the challenges we foresee and are prepared to overcome:
EXCEEDING OUR GOAL
Sometimes Kickstarter projects take off, and we’re hoping ours does! Fortunately the women in this partnership have been making beaded jewelry for generations as part of their tribal traditions. They already have a high production capacity, and we believe we have set realistic goals with them. We have limited our project rewards according to what they think they can produce over the next several months, so we should have no trouble getting the rewards out as soon as the collection launches in 2014!
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING CHALLENGES
This will be the first time we are importing from Kenya on such a large scale, so there could be unexpected delays with customs etc. We promise to do our best to get your rewards to you by December 2013 (2 whole months before the products officially launch in 2014!), and communicate openly with you if we encounter any delays.
GETTING PRODUCT TO OUR SUPPORTERS
We will be shipping all of our rewards out with tracking information so we can keep you updated on its estimated arrival time, and ensure that nothing gets lost in the mail!
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU
All Raven + Lily products are fair trade and we commit to pour our resources into seeing these artisan groups flourish.
