The more you back FRED, the greener he gets! Help us make the first Fully Recyclable Ecological Design Lamp.
We've taken our Kickstarter project into the real world. We are presenting FRED at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Come check it out if you are in the neighborhood!!
FRED is a lamp. FRED is a very nice lamp. But FRED aspires to be an even better lamp. You see, FRED has a dream, but he can’t do it alone. FRED needs your help. By backing FRED you will be helping him reach his full and very bright potential. FRED really, really wants to become the world’s first 100% sustainable lamp.
But that’s a mouthful, so we’re going with:
I’m so glad you asked. FRED is already a lamp, and a very nice lamp at that. But, by reaching further and stretching FRED’s goals he will become greener and greener. With every stretch-goal we reach we will be able to swap an existing part of FRED for a more sustainable alternative.
For instance, before Fred was FRED, his body was made out of MDF. Now we want to make it out of ECOR. ECOR is a completely sustainable “Cradle-to-Cradle” sheet material made by compressing cellulose fibres (wood, paper, grasses, etc.) together under pressure whilst adding heat to form a super strong board. No formaldehyde, chemicals, petroleum or toxic additives whatsoever are used during the production process.
FRED is cool. But that’s not all. There is more to FRED than just his sexy body. There’s his wiring, plug, switch, socket and last but not least his packaging. This is where the stretch-goals come into play. Each new stretch-goal we achieve will give us the funds to switch out FRED’s current bits with sustainable alternatives. For instance, when we reach the first stretch-goal we can change FRED’s wiring from PVC to a fully recyclable alternative that has no halogens (very bad). And that’s just the beginning! So you see, the more you Back FRED the greener he gets. Get it?
If we reach this then everyone gets their lamp: a FRED, a Drop That FRED or Phat FRED. They are made from ECOR but have normal wiring, packaging, plugs and switches.
If we hit this goal then FRED will get fully recyclable wiring made from an alternative to PVC which contains no halogens, but still adheres to all the safety standards that good wiring should have.
Another very good question, you clever clogs you! Well, if we use a new material everything needs to be tested again to make sure that FRED is safe (and we care deeply about his safety). Also, the demand for non-PVC wiring is currently not very high, which means that this step alone will need some fat-stacks in terms of funding to make it happen.
Reaching this goal would mean that we can dress FRED up in a very sexy, custom made, completely sustainable packaging.
Yup, it’s a BIG number. But FRED has expensive taste and his dream outfit (insert wolf-whistle here) is a very special new packaging made with expensive, very accurate, aluminium, machine milled molds. This requires a big investment.
This would enable us to give FRED a fully recyclable cable and plug-switch-lamp-holder; which combines existing molds with sustainable plastics. This goal would also allow us to change the interior of all these components to make them easier to recycle (which is good, recycling is very, very good).
We know, it’s a LOT of money. 100.000 isn’t a nice round number, it’s obese. Again with the testing… but remember boys and girls, safety first! On top of the testing that needs to be done there is more testing. And while we’re doing more testing we need to do extra research into which bio-based/sustainable plastics work best with the electrical components. We’ll be going directly to plug, switch and lamp-holder producers so we can work with them to create the perfect parts for FRED.
Ahhh please ask, go on, you know you want to! Well, since you asked; FRED is unique and that means that if you’re silly enough to start from scratch with the development of something like this then it becomes tricky to the right smarty pants’ and when we find them we often discover that even really smart people have cats to feed and bills to pay… who knew?!
Because of the way this project is set up everyone is involved. The more people join the greener FRED gets. So every backer becomes a spokesperson for FRED. As a backer you can gain by making FRED more successful. You might have to wait a little longer for FRED to arrive but hey, good things come to those who wait, or so we’ve heard.
It stands to reason that waiting for something better and getting it right takes time. There are boatloads of lamps that claim to be sustainable, but the truth is that these lamps are dirty rotten liars. Their lampshades might be made out of recycled cardboard but their wiring is still made from the evil PVC stuff that is bad bad BAD for the environment. Oh, and then there’s also the fact that FRED is a determined little bugger who wants to go the full Monty; to strip off his regular clothes and strut around in some funky, cool, sustainable alternatives.
He makes use of the non-directional-lighting-method. Or simply put: you can’t stare straight into the bulb. FRED doesn’t like it and neither do we. Because of the slanted ribs the light is reflected and it gives FRED a very pleasant glow. FRED is a versatile character and comes in three different sizes. All three FREDs have different uses.
With pleasure! The FRED lamps come with a sufficiently long cable. complete with switch, lamp holder and either a US, UK or European plug and will work with the standard electrical sockets in your region. The lamps fit an energy efficient E14 or E27 fitting light bulb. They all arrive at your doorstep as a kit to be self-assembled.
FRED is a desk lamp for your study, a bedside lamp for reading or just a nice addition to any living room.
Drop That FRED is a pendant lamp, ideal for in the bedroom or above a small dining table. You could use more for a bigger dining table. Two FREDs is company, three is a PAR-TAY!
Phat FRED is a floor lamp for the living room, or wherever you want to put him. Don’t be fooled though, if you want to hang Phat FRED from the ceiling by all means do so!
After you have backed FRED he will become yours forever, so what you do with him is entirely up to you (but be nice to FRED).
Wow! You’re keen? But, nope. Sorry. FRED is not quite ready yet. We’ve done a lot of legwork and spent many hours researching realistic estimates for the stretch-goals and the possible cost of materials and parts. However, there is still a long way to go. We have created a concept proof, but finished Fully sustainable FRED needs more time, more blood, more sweat - but hopefully no tears. Have no fear though, my lamp loving friend - trust in FRED and he will deliver.
To start off, FRED will be the first consumer lamp made from ECOR. His shade is completely recyclable and biodegradable. Have you ever come across other lampshade can you throw into the garden without feeling bad about it?
No way José! Other lamps use PVC wiring which contains halogens. Our first stretch-goal would allow us to use PVC- and halogen free wiring that is completely recyclable. Why don’t other lamps have this? Two reasons really. On the one hand it is not as readily available as PVC, which has been the choice for wiring ever since it came on the market. On the other hand it is more expensive, but it is something we gladly spend your money on ;)
As designers and craftsmen, we are always looking for ways to improve our designs and products. A big part of this is to make our products as sustainable and responsible as possible. When we first started making lamps we chose to use Plywood using a CNC-mill. We discovered pretty quickly that this was not the best way to go… SO. MUCH. SANDING. Aarrgghh!!! So we made the transition towards MDF and laser cutting. This was much easier and proved to be much more efficient. The reduced production time meant we were now able to sell our lamps at very fair prices.
We were doing well in the Netherlands and starting to sell well in the German and British markets; but something was gnawing at us. It just didn’t feel quite right. Although MDF is quite sustainable in its own right there are still some drawbacks because of the adhesives involved and also due to the use of new wood. One day we stumbled across this really new “super” material called ECOR®. ECOR is a completely sustainable “cradle-to-cradle” sheet material made by compressing cellulose fibres (wood, paper, grasses, etc.) together under pressure whilst adding heat to form a super strong board. No formaldehyde, chemicals, petroleum or toxic additives whatsoever are used during the production process (we realize we’ve mentioned this before but we think it’s so cool we wanted to tell you twice). Ecor sheets are perfect for use on a laser-cutter and we immediately recognized the potential of this new product and knew it was exactly what we needed to make our lampshades more sustainable. That was the turning point, from then on we decided that it was time for a complete overhaul of our design. And so, FRED was born.
- Simon, has been on board from the get-go with his Graphic Design skills and Kickstarter advice (check out his Kickstarter-backed book here!)
- Tara, helped us create the film about FRED; sticking with our ridiculous planning and keeping us focused.
- Denzyl, whose arms are still killing him after having to hold the camera while shooting of the film. Sorry for all those retakes where we kept getting our lines wrong. You have lovely arms.
- Frank, for being Frank when we needed Frank.
- Philip, who brought the film to life with audio and visual effects.
- ECOR, for making the great material that has made FRED possible. http://ecorglobal.com/
We are still looking for other smart, fun, and talented people who can help us bring FRED to life. If you fit that description don’t hesitate to shoot us an E-mail if you want to lend us a helping hand – Thanks in advance.
Risks and challenges
We have extensive experience in manufacturing and logistics from previous projects. We pride ourselves on producing our pieces to the very highest standards, and this is something that isn’t going to change!
The Lamp design has been tried and tested for over a year now. We know it works very well (and looks great too!) So we are confident that you will be very happy with what you will receive as a backer.
For FRED to enter the international market he has to be certified. We’re not experts in this area. That's why we are partnering with experts who can handle all the necessary steps required to get all three FREDs approved and certified for the consumer market.
However we are well aware of any unforeseen circumstances that can occur in processes like this. We have created a buffer in our delivery timeline to make sure that we can deliver when promised. Other factors, such as this project really exceeding our wildest dreams (although we can hope!) to suppliers having their shipments or stock being delayed can all slow the process down.
Like all great kickstarter projects, we are looking forward to hearing from the community and backers, giving input and their great ideas and suggestions that will really help this project grow to something even better! This may also have a (positive!) impact on the delivery time line!
We really appreciate the time and support you have taken to look into our project. We would love to hear from you if you have any questions or suggestions to help realize our goal and make this sustainable lamp possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
