You can think about this Young GeEK's Guide as a sort of prequel to the Holly Wild series.
So what’s this GeEK stuff all about, anyway? Well, here’s the scoop:
A GeEK is a Geo-Explorer Kid, an idea that I introduced in my Holly Wild books, a mid-grade realistic fiction nature mystery series. These chapter books take ten-and-a-half-year-old Holly Wild and her best friends around the state, investigating Michigan parks and wild places and cover things such as area history, local flora and fauna, science, and myth and legend. They promote interest in nature and encourage kids to be curious, to get outside and use their senses, to explore their environment and make observations. Kids love them because they’re funny and fun to read. Parents and educators love them because they teach.
The response to this series has been incredible, and we get asked all the time when we’re going to create a book for the younger crowd. Well, here it is! The theme of adventure and exploration is the same, but the focus is set for lil’ GeEKs – backyard play and discovery. The backyard habitat is so, so important for young GeEKs to explore. It’s their first playground.
Getting into the outdoors is as easy as ABC!
This isn’t just another ABC book, and it’s meant to encourage more than just reading. This alphabet adventure introduces Holly and her Team to younger readers as they take some lil’ GeEKs into the WILD BACKYARD, where they share their tools and skills with the younger cousins and spend the entire day in search of simple, imaginative fun. Throughout the book, rhymes and games teach kids fun & easy ways to enjoy themselves outdoors, and educational prompts offer opportunities for discussion and learning. There's even a Backyard BINGO Scavenger Hunt that's sure to get kids outside.
What's so great about being a GeEK?
Getting kids outside is about more than just having fun - it offers them many health benefits. They get dirty, which strengthens their immune system. They get fresh air and sunlight, which creates Vitamin D. They get to run around and burn off pent up energy, which keeps them moving and provides exercise. Studies show that young kids are happier & healthier if their life is filled with PLAY. Unstructured play time builds confidence and boosts creativity, which helps kids with problem solving. All of these things are vital to their overall well-being. Holly Wild and the GeEK Team demonstrate respect and responsibility, for friends and for the environment. Let’s build strong, kind, self-confident, and nurturing kids! Let’s keep kids outside—laughing and learning.

How does Kickstarter work?
Bear Track Press currently publishes all of Lori’s books, and they are all printed right here in Michigan. It’s very important to us to be able to print the picture book in the USA, and that’s where you come in! By pre-ordering Holly Wild: The Young GeEK’s Guide to Getting Outside or selecting one of the awesome GeEK packages offered through this Kickstarter campaign, you can help us secure the funding to cover most of the costs in printing.
Kickstarter is unique among the crowdfunding sites as it is an all-or-nothing program. During the campaign, you order the books of your choice and provide your billing information, but your credit card isn’t charged until the campaign ends - and only if we meet our goal of $3,500.00. We can go over our goal, but if we don’t receive $3,500.00 in pre-orders before the campaign ends on June 30th, your credit card is not charged and we don’t get any money. So please share the link with your friends and families, teachers, librarians, everyone! If you don’t have young kids, nieces, nephews, or grandkids, you can still help us reach our goal by pledging without selecting a reward, or by donating your reward to your local library or children’s hospital.
We at BEAR TRACK PRESS thank you! We appreciate your help in getting the word and pictures out to young kids, and for supporting environmental literacy and getting kids INTO the OUTdoors.

Risks and challenges
We have already published five mid-grade/junior fiction chapter books in addition to two full color graphic readers, so we are well versed on the publishing side. Since the entire creative process up to preparing the files for printing are done by us, we have complete control and can make sure everything is done properly. We lose that control once the book is sent to the printer, and since our existing printer does not have the capability to bind a hard cover book, we will be using a new printer for the picture book. As with most things, there is always the possibility that we will run into issues or delays. However, this printer was recommended by another author and we built in some extra delivery time to cover any bumps along the road, so we feel confident that we will be able to handle any issues that may arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
