Hail is a superhero comic about Lena, a woman who crumbles into shards of glass whenever she has an anxiety attack, which makes her dream to become a lawyer even more difficult. But it also spurs her into finding other ways to help people. While her friends Ebony and Seth have mixed reactions to her crime-fighting adventures (both caution and extreme enthusiasm), it also doesn't take long for new enemies to notice.
Hail faces the difficulties of living with mental illness while simultaneously indulging in superhero action, comedy, romance and friendship. It's much like real life, but with extra superheroes.
Issues 1-3 are free to read online now at hailcomic.com if you want to see what it's all about!
Meet the Characters
Lena works at a law firm by day and in her spare time she reads, drinks tea and foils the occasional bank heist. She's a mostly cheerful person determined to find ways to help people beyond the walls she comes up against in her day to day life.
Ebony has been Lena's best friend since their days studying law. She takes great pleasure in being an extreme over-achiever, with strong ambitions and a somewhat shady background in computer hacking. She likes making fancy meals and crocheting things.
Seth works at the law firm with Lena and Ebony. Despite being brought up by his wealthy family to work in law, he's perpetually unkempt and has a pretty chilled out attitude towards everything. He loves birds, a lot.
Dorian is a crime reporter for the Adeline Times who has a mysterious past and spends a lot of hours at the gym. He likes chai lattes and has a deep seated fear of anyone touching his eyes. Does that sound weird? He's a weird guy.
The Shepherd is a serial killer looming on the edges of Hail's story, moving ever closer to a confrontation with Lena. His apparent lack of pattern between those he murders confounds the police force, and he collects dog collars and wears them on his arms.
If you're able to support us we can offer your very own copies of the comic(s)! If you can't make our print launch, we'll send your copies out after the 25th June. We also have a bunch of other cool gear available, and if you take one of the top tiers Rosanna Lam will draw YOU turning into glass! OMG! (A head-and-shoulders portrait of course, for the sake of modesty...) Check out the rewards list for more detail.
Writer/Project Manager: Miranda Richardson
Miranda finished a creative writing degree in early 2015 after having some great experiences in 2D animation and film. She has a strong interest in illness narrative in fantasy and an increasingly intense love of comics. She works part time in medical administration and spends every other waking minute working on, thinking about, and enjoying art. Hail is her first serial comic and she can't wait to move deeper into the story and into the comics community.
Lead Artist: Rosanna Lam
Rosanna Lam is an aspiring artist who is currently studying a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts: Digital Media at Flinders University. She aims to develop proficiency in digital media production consisting of multi-media design, illustration, 2D and 3D animation, and screen production, and hopes, that one day, her creations will inspire others. In her spare time, Rosanna likes to read manga and play games to appease her ever-growing interests in comic illustration and game design.
We also have a couple of super cool background artists, Tom Murton and Mala Kerr, along with a crack team of other artists who work on inking, colouring and shading: Terri Arnold, Rhianna Carr, Sarah Lloyd, Sandeson Gonzaga, Maddy Deane, Christopher Genovese, Ethan Robertson, Jasmine Woolcock and Luke Bartholomew.
Why a Kickstarter?
Most of us are studying art or working part time to fund our work in comics at this stage in our careers. So basically, we are a little low on the funds! But moving Hail into print will open up so many doors for us. Many readers prefer not to read online, so we can meet with a whole new audience by going into print. After the launch we can take our comics to conventions and become more involved in the comics community. We're incredibly excited! If you can support us and come with us for that part of the journey, we'll be so happy.
Risks and challenges
As the art work is already completed, the risks and challenges to this project are pretty minimal. We've done a small test print run of Issue 1 with Jeffries Printing Services and the finished product has great quality paper and colour. We've contacted them to make sure there's enough time from submitting our work for printing on the 1st of June to launch on the 25th. We've also discussed the actual launch date with Greenlight Comics in Adelaide and we're all set to go.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
