The Little Lemon that Leapt is a children's picture book written and illustrated by a mother/daughter duo in Northern California. The adventure began during the Spring of 2013. Karen (writer/mom) had always dreamed of writing a children's book, and Hannah (illustrator/daughter) was a recent UC Berkeley grad interested in the publishing industry. After a rigorous afternoon of brainstorming, Karen wrote "the little lemon leapt without fear" in her notebook. Seventeen months of teamwork and dedication later, The Little Lemon that Leapt is ready to launch!
The Little Lemon that Leapt uses imaginative alliteration and quirky illustrations to tell the story of a little lemon (AKA Lionel) who leaps from his tree and sets off to see the world. On his adventure, he meets an assortment of characters who are doing the 'weirdest' things. Lionel the Lemon spends much of the book frustrated with the world and its peculiarities. It takes a ginormous giraffe to show the little lemon that by leaping from his tree, he was weird too! (And weird. Is. Wonderful.)
Our vision, however, isn't just to print our book...it is also to combat bullying through our #ichooseweird movement!
In 1944, the U.S. Forest Service created Smokey the Bear. This campaign to prevent forest fires targeted America's children, and as these children grew, forest fires caused by human neglect diminished. We believe that our #ichooseweird campaign will have parallel success with bullying by working from the ground up.
The Little Lemon that Leapt teaches children at a young age to embrace what makes them unique. Our goal is to bring The Little Lemon that Leapt to schools across America through our #ichooseweird campaign, which will include book readings and anti-bullying workshops where children will be encouraged to share what makes them weird, and why it also makes them wonderful. We envision children carrying this appreciation for individuality into high school and eventually their adult lives.

$???,000 Reach Goal | THE LEMON MERINGUE PIE IN THE SKY
Speaking of lemons in the sky...can you imagine Lionel the Lemon floating as a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? We can! This honor requires an invitation and a LOT of dough, but like Lionel, we like to DREAM BIG!!!
Karen credits her father (Hannah's grandfather), Lionel, for filling her childhood with daily lessons of acceptance. His constant examples of compassion, and zero tolerance for bullying, were the inspiration for The Little Lemon that Leapt.
In addition to the little lemon's name, there are several homages to Lionel in the book. The V.W. Bug driven by the hedgehog and his bluegrass band is a salute to Karen's first car, a 1963 V.W. Bug that her dad spent countless hours restoring. If you look closely at the giraffe's tree, you can see "L+C" carved into the trunk; Lionel and Carole will be celebrating 56 years of marriage this spring. The Little Lemon that Leapt KickStarter Campaign will also run for 36 days in honor of Lionel's birth year (1936).
If the two Lionels' paths were ever to cross, we know they would be the best of friends.
Risks and challenges
At this point, 3 key steps rest between today and the day The Little Lemon that Leapt arrives at your doorstep:
1. Final Edits
● Leonardo da Vinci once said that "art is never finished, only abandoned." While we will never 'abandon' our little lemon, we eventually have to accept that our creation is ready for the world to enjoy. (Sequel, anyone?) Our goal is to finalize all edits by the last day of our campaign.
2. Spreading the Word
● This is where YOU (our lovely family, friends, friends of friends, admirers(?), distant relatives...etc.) come into play. KickStarter only works if you have a strong support group to help you make it, so please share, share, share! Thank you for all your support! We ♥︎ you!
3. Final Product
● We have spent many hours bringing this book to life, so we have the highest of expectations for the final product. We see great importance in both printing and binding our book in the USA. This drastically limits our options, but we have narrowed it down to a great company in Berkeley, CA (GO BEARS)!
