NEW STRETCH GOALS - 10/16/15!

Since you guys have boosted us so fantastically high, I had to come up with some brand new stretch goals! Since I already owe you 5 short stories and a David novella, plus the novel, I can't continue to promise more writing, but I've come up with some pretty sweet incentives to keep us going:

CHARACTER CARDS - $13,000 - ACHIEVED 10/18!

At the $13,000 mark, I'll print up these super cool playing-card-size character cards for you ... free for EVERY BACKER, regardless of level. (You'll ONLY be able to get these here, through this Kickstarter!)

RED HOT RAIN character cards!

LEVEL UP: ILL WIND SIGNED PRINTS - $15,000

The original cover artist for ILL WIND, Dave Seeley, has kindly agreed to provide a special run of letter-sized archival prints for this Kickstarter ... signed by him and me! If we hit $15,000 on this Kickstarter, you ALL get a copy, regardless of backer level! (Dave's going to do the cover art for RED HOT RAIN, too!)

ILL WIND COVER ART

LEVEL UP, AGAIN: ALL THREE DAVE SEELEY COVERS - $20,000

If we by some miracle hit the $20k mark before this Kickstarter ends, Dave and I will provide the other two covers ... so you'll get ILL WIND, HEAT STROKE and CHILL FACTOR! Free to EVERY BACKER!

HEAT STROKE COVER ART

CHILL FACTOR COVER ART

If by some strange miracle we get past THAT goal and get to $25,000, heck, I'll sign up for stormchaser ride-along and give you guys LIVE VIDEO from a wild night of stormchasing in Tornado Alley next spring!

Thanks, guys. This is already a wildly successful Kickstarter. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and excitement for new Weather Warden stories!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So here's the thing: I love urban fantasy. I was writing urban fantasy way back when nobody knew what to call it (genre blending? magical realism? slipstream?), and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when people started catching on that it was a cool way to tell a story.

And my readers honored me GREATLY by allowing me to write not just nine Weather Warden novels, but also four in a spin-off series called Outcast Season. And it was a wonderful experience!

Unfortunately, as with all things, there was a change in the weather (see what I did there?) and word began to circulate in the industry that urban fantasy was finished ... and readers were moving on. Fearing the worst, fewer UF books were acquired by publishers, which led to fewer sold, which led to a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I think there's still an audience of readers out there that wants a cool blending of action, magic and sassy adventuring, well told. Maybe that's YOU. (It's certainly ME.)

So I'd like to write another Weather Warden book. I've never self-published as Rachel Caine before, and never with something like this, with an established audience who's passionate about the material.

So, I hope you'll find this an interesting proposition. Here's the description of the book:

------------------------------

PLACEHOLDER COVER! Final cover will be done by a pro illustrator and designer. This was just, uh, me. Rachel Caine.
PLACEHOLDER COVER! Final cover will be done by a pro illustrator and designer. This was just, uh, me. Rachel Caine.

RED HOT RAIN starts a few years after the end of TOTAL ECLIPSE, in a world that seems to finally be settled. Mother Earth isn't mad at us. The Djinn have kissed and made up (sometimes literally) with the Wardens, and the two sides work together to solve whatever problems do arise. All good, right?

Nope.

When Joanne Baldwin first hears about a freak monster storm that destroys the rebuilding community of Lubbock, Texas, she takes a personal trip to find out what's going on. Problem is, seems like it's exactly as it appears: a freak natural occurrence.

But when the same kind of storm tears a killer swath across the country to follow her home, and all her Warden powers can't put a dent in it, it's clear there's more to this storm front than physics. Soon, Joanne's embroiled in a deadly struggle against a mysterious, powerful opponent, and her husband David--most powerful of the Djinn--seems strangely unhelpful against whatever's coming for her. Even Lewis, her long-time friend and ally, now an otherworldly consort to Mother Earth herself, doesn't seem inclined (or able) to help. Someone's got the mother of all grudges against Joanne Baldwin, and they're coming at her hard.

And not just her. Joanne's not just fighting for her own life. It's coming for her son, too.

It'll be up to Joanne to save herself and her son from the storm that's coming for them ... a storm that wants to erase Joanne Baldwin and everyone she loves from the face of the earth.

DELIVERABLES FROM THIS KICKSTARTER:

- eBook

- Print trade paperback

- Limited edition perfect bound hardcover edition, signed and numbered, in slip case

ALL THESE ITEMS WILL BE CREATED USING PROFESSIONAL SERVICES. In short: professional editors. Professional layout artists. Professional cover artists (the cover I created used on this Kickstarter is just a placeholder!). Grim Oak Press will create the signed and numbered special editions.

The money I'm seeking on Kickstarter is NOT to pay me for my time writing this book. It's solely to defray up-front costs associated with paying other professionals for their services to bring this book to market. The more I get, the cooler the edition, and the more stretch goals get activated.

HOW THIS BOOK WILL BE SOLD:

After all Kickstarter backers have received their assigned rewards (and ONLY AFTER those rewards have been shipped, emailed or otherwise made available), RED HOT RAIN will be listed for sale at ebook and print retailers, and limited editions that went unclaimed during the Kickstarter will be sold via rachelcaine.com using Shopify. If we meet the audiobook stretch goal, that will likely be distributed via Audible.

STRETCH GOALS!

$7000 - Audiobook - If we hit $7000 ($2000 over the original goal), I'll commission a professional voice actor to create an unabridged version! Could even be someone you know. COULD HAPPEN!

-----------------------------------------Update: AUDIOBOOK ACHIEVED!!!!

$8000 to $10,000 - Short stories - If Kickstarter hits: $8000 ($3000 over goal), I'll write a brand new 5000 word Weather Warden short story that gets distributed free to all backers. And for every additional $500 raised over $8000, I'll write another short story. Up to a max of five. Which you all get for free.

------------------Update: SHORT STORY 1 ACHIEVED! ($8000)

---------------------Update: SHORT STORY 2 ACHIEVED! ($8500)

-----------------------Update: SHORT STORY 3 ACHIEVED! ($9000)

-------------------------Update: SHORT STORY 4 ACHIEVED! ($9500)

---------------------------Update: SHORT STORY 5 ACHIEVED! ($10000)

$10,001 plus - Special novella featuring David - If we hit $10,001 (a dollar over double!) then I'll write an extra novella (about 25,000 words) about David that will be free to all backers and only backers. It will not be part of any future collections. It will disappear like a Djinn in a bad mood, never to be seen again. Except the copy you keep, of course. And I'll even throw in an audiobook recording of me reading it for you!

---------------------------Update: DAVID NOVELLA ACHIEVED! ($10001)

UPDATE: I'm working on some more cool stretch goals! You guys absolutely blew this thing UP, and caught me totally by surprise. We've still got 7 days to go! MORE COOL STRETCH GOALS ON THE WAY!

Risks and challenges

Obviously the risk is that I won't finish this book. But in the past 25 years of professional publishing, I have never, ever not delivered a book for publication. The latest I have ever delivered a book was about 3 months out of deadline, either from serious illness or other complicating factors.

Another risk is that I end up selling too much work to other sources (nice problem to have, I know!), and this ends up at the bottom of the to-do pile. Which is why I've set this publication as far out as I have (July 2016) to allow for any other deadlines that might potentially overlap. I've juggled multiple books for years (sometimes as many as 5 in one year), and I judge this risk to be relatively small.

Also, there is a significant chance that the sun may explode. I have no workaround for that one, until we find a handy Djinn lying around.

However: by my count, RED HOT RAIN would be my 50th novel completed and sold. So I think I have a good shot at making it happen without any disappointments or complications. I have good connections in the industry to hire the best editors and layout artists, the best cover artists and audiobook people. The best printers for the special editions. I think this will be one hell of a great thing, if you can help me make it happen.
