About this project

The Origami project was started in TechShop.  Watch the video below to learn how it all began...

This is a video of one of the unique projects you can do with the Origami...

The Origami also works in non-standard orientations.  For example, you can place the Origami on its back to etch a wall or a window.  The following is a demonstration of the Origami etching cardstock against a wall...

The Origami cuts and etches most organic materials including acrylic, wood, paper, cardboard, cloth, glass, leather, etc.  This is a video we've created showing the Origami cutting out an acrylic ant...

To view more videos of the Origami in action, visit our YouTube channel.

Below are example objects cut on the Origami in various materials, including acrylic, cardboard, press-board, plywood, and even corrugated plastic.

This is the Red Ant Team with the first functional prototype of the Origami.  Shown from left to right are David, Mike, Ollie, Liz, and Scott.  Visit redantlasers.com to learn more about our team.

Risks and challenges

Here are some of the challenges we anticipate as we move forward with our project:

Safety Awareness: Not everyone is aware that they can safely use a laser in their home or workplace. One of the challenges we face is helping people understand that it is possible to do so. We are working with a nationally recognized laser safety certification organization to fulfill our FDA and CDRH requirements and to provide an online safety training course to each backer who receives an Origami. As we move forward with this process we will be sharing what we've learned so that everyone can learn what's possible and will begin to understand that lasers can be safe, useful tools.

Engineering Development: We have defined the fundamental design of the Origami, and it will not change. Our iteration process from this point will include only refinements to the existing systems. This will ensure that our backers will receive a device very similar to the current engineering prototype as described in our videos. We also have tight controls over our manufacturing process because we are doing the manufacturing ourselves.

Time: We want all of our backers to have a positive experience, and with the successful funding of our Kickstarter we can dedicate the time required to make that a reality. We've limited the number of machines we'll be creating because we're trying to start a sustainable business, and we've budgeted our time conservatively in order to allow us to meet our obligations.

There will be challenges along the way. We know this, but we're not sure what they are yet. With the success of a fully funded Kickstarter project, we hope to find out -- and conquer them!

"What the World Needs Now..." Well, it IS the World's Most Portable Laser Cutter, so let's give it to the world! This pledge level is for a few lucky international backers, and the shipping is included. You choose between 110v and 220v while we box the Origami up, file the necessary paperwork, and get it shipped to your door, even outside the US of A. We admit that this international process will take research and planning on our part, so we have built in extra time for the delivery on this pledge level. Please know that we will work hard to ship these sooner, and we will be in touch with our international backers every step of the way. This is new territory for us, but we are happy to take on the challenge of delivering this technology to where it belongs, the World.
