What is Sticks and Stones?
Sticks and Stones is an interactive drama for 6th-8th graders that focuses on bias-based bullying.
During the play, kids function as:
• Audience members…as they view short scenes performed by the artists
• Critical thinkers…as they reflect on the scenes and use their own reasoning to draw conclusions
• Actors…as they implement their ideas through role playing
Goals of program:
• To create a safe learning environment for all students
• To recognize students’ personal responsibility within their larger community
• To examine decision-making and the consequences of those decisions
After the success of Alice’s Story, an interactive anti-bullying performance and workshop for elementary school students, Making Books Sing began receiving calls from parents and teachers requesting the same kind of program for middle school kids. Sticks and Stones was developed during the summer of 2012 at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Old Bridge, New Jersey and at The Queens Museum of Art.
How is Sticks and Stones different from Alice's Story?
While Alice's Story is geared toward 6-11 year olds, Sticks and Stones is meant to explore more complex and mature issues that are most prevalent among 12-14 year olds. Sticks and Stones focuses on bias-based bullying, which encompasses verbal or physical abuse motivated by race, religion, gender, sexuality or disability. Sticks and Stones explores social justice, cyberbullying and civic responsibility. Middle school kids are encouraged to deconstruct stereotypes and examine both their relationships and the roles they play within these issues. They will reflect on their personal sense of individuality while also examining the unspoken cultural and/or societal definitions of “normal” vs. “different.”
What will the money go towards?
Your contribution will go towards actor salaries, rehearsal and production costs, transportation, publicity, administrative costs, student workshops, supplemental materials for teachers and parents, and any other costs associated with the tour.
Outside grants will cover roughly half the costs, but we still need donations from individual backers like you to bring subsidized performancesto as many schools as possible.
Which neighborhoods will you reach on your tour?
