About

From Briandaniel:

Howdy y’all,

Halfway, Nebraska is going to the New York International Fringe Festival, and we need your help!

Six years ago, I wrote a one-act titled Nebraska by Noon following the characters of Sheila, Nate, and Miri, as they drove from California to Nebraska on one intense road trip. I wanted to spend more time with the characters -- to crack them open and see who they are. I expanded the one-act into the full-length.

I’m excited that the full-length will have a full production, directed by Daniel Melnick. The Fringe is a perfect place for it to live.

Halfway, Nebraska was developed as part of Playwrights’ Week at the Lark Play Development Center. The one-act version was a National Finalist for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival John Cauble Award for a Short Play.

Producing a play is expensive, especially in New York. In order to cover some of the costs, Daniel and I are coming to you -- our family, our friends, and any generous netizen with an interest in theatre and new work.

Please consider chipping in. We’d very much appreciate the support!

Thank you,

-- Bd

From Daniel:

Hi Friends

During my final year at UCSB, I had the opportunity to direct a wonderful one-act play called NEBRASKA BY NOON. Ever since, I've been nurturing a desire to work on it again.

Flash forward a couple years, and NEBRASKA BY NOON has been developed into a full-length play called HALFWAY, NEBRASKA, it's being featured in this year's New York City International Fringe Festival, and I once again find myself with the opportunity to share this play with all of you!

HALFWAY, NEBRASKA follows Sheila, and her two adoptive children, Nate and Miri, as they roadtrip across the country from California to Nebraska. Nate's deeply troubled, and at times, explosively violent, and Sheila plans to take advantage of a loophole in Nebraska's Safe Haven law that would allow her to abandon Nate at a hospital without any legal penalty. As the miles tick away, the bonds that hold this fragile family together strain and eventually break.

One of the things I love most about HALFWAY, NEBRASKA is the delicacy and honesty with which it approaches it's characters and the difficult circumstances they face. In a less brilliant script, it would be all too easy for either Nate or Sheila to become a monster, a caricature of the violent adolescent or the bad mother. Not so in HALFWAY, NEBRASKA. Though each of the characters (even 8 year old Miri) do some things that are hard to empathize with, they're all portrayed as full people. Flawed? Unquestionably, but not evil or even malevolent at core. The play provides an avenue towards a greater sense of empathy, both for ourselves, and others.

Any way you cut it, making great theatre isn't cheap, and making great theatre in New York is even less cheap. Briandaniel and I are coming to you in the hope that you'll consider chipping in whatever you can afford to help get this important piece of theatre up on it's feet. Hope to see you all at the show!

How Your Support Will Help

There's no way around it, creating theatre isn't cheap. We're dedicated to paying our actors, designers, and stage managers. In addition to those run of the mill costs, some of the things your contribution will help cover include:

  • $2000 for rehearsal space
  • $700 FringeNYC Participation Fee
  • $325 to flameproof the set in accordance with Fringe Regulations
  • $200 for additional mandatory venue fees
  • $200 for the storage and transportation of scenic elements
  • $125 for insurance

Other Ways You Can Help

We're incredibly grateful for any contribution you can make, whether it's one dollar or a thousand. Kickstarter alone won't be able to cover all of our production costs, but each contribution is a huge help in getting this show on it's feet! If you can't contribute, don't sweat it, you can still help us spread the word by sharing this link on Facebook and Twitter. The more times it's shared, the better shot we have of making it on to the front page of Kickstarter. Also, be sure to like our facebook page and follow us on twitter so that we can keep you updated about the show and let you know about other opportunities to connect with the HALFWAY, NEBRASKA team!

Thank you in advance for your support, it takes a village to make great theatre!
