In the spring of 2016, Turner Prize-nominated artist Marvin Gaye Chetwynd was commissioned by Liverpool Biennial to produce a new work for their Children's Episode. The result was Dogsy Ma Bone, a film and series of extravagant live events that brought together Bertolt Brecht, Betty Boop and the creativity of over 70 children and young adults from in and around Liverpool.
Central to Dogsy Ma Bone were eight new songs inspired by Brecht and Kurt Weill's legendary The Threepenny Opera. Written and composed by Glasgow-based Beinn Watson and Emily Benita, with additional contributions by Marc David Jacobs, Tony Whitby and Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, these songs were moulded by their young performers into the versions performed at the Biennial last summer.
After another performance at Touchstones Rochdale this March, Marvin and the kids are preparing to perform the full set of eight songs for the first time, in a major show at Tate Modern on 24th June. To celebrate this, we want to professionally record the songs and produce an album that will be freely available for download.
Rehearsals for the Tate Modern performance will take place on 10th and 11th June in Liverpool. If this Kickstarter is successful, we'll be able to bring Beinn to Liverpool to make recordings during these rehearsals, which we'll master in time to launch the album at Tate and online. Contributing to this campaign therefore not only allows our album to get made, but also gives you the chance to become an essential part of its creation!
Dogsy Ma Bone: The Album will be made freely available online on the day of its Tate Modern launch. But, as a way of funding its recording and production, we're going to produce a limited CD and vinyl edition, initial copies of which will be available to our generous Kickstarter backers. By helping us make it, you'll have a first chance to own Dogsy Ma Bone: The Album in its physical form!
Copies of the CD are available to all our £10 backers, with vinyls at £20 - or you can get both (with the vinyl signed by Marvin and team) if you're one of our first £50 backers! But, if you'd like to pitch in even more to ensure the album is produced, we're also offering the chance to get the album along with some exclusive pieces of Dogsy Ma Bone.
For £150, ten backers will receive the Gettin' Dogsy limited edition print, previously available solely through Liverpool Biennial.
For £200, three backers will each receive one signature Dogsy Ma Bone costume, consisting of a tunic and hood in their choice of dog, puppy or chihuahua pattern.
At £300, we have one copy of an original shooting script from the filming of Dogsy Ma Bone in May-June 2016, containing handwritten notes and changes by Marvin and the filming team.
For those contributing £500 each, we have handmade drawings by Marvin Gaye Chetwynd of her original Dogsy Ma Bone concept.
And finally, for one backer who is able to contribute £1000, we will give you three of these concept drawings, plus the production's beautiful salamander prop (SOLD OUT) - a featured star of every Dogsy Ma Bone performance to date!
NEW Dogsy Rewards: Dogsy Packages I & II!
By popular demand, we've now added two special packages for collectors! Dogsy Package I consists of a set of three of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd's original Dogsy Ma Bone drawings for £1000. Dogsy Package II (SOLD OUT) contains a brand-new version of the salamander prop, plus a Dogsy Ma Bone costume AND one original Marvin Gaye Chetwynd drawing, all for £1250.
These are both expected to go very quickly, so snatch them up before they're gone for good!
NEW The Return of the Salamander!
We've had so much love for the Dogsy Ma Bone salamander that Marvin has agreed to create two more new versions of the prop for contributors in the project's final week. Now, those contributing £1000 or more can have their choice of one new salamander prop with either a Dogsy Ma Bone costume OR two original Dogsy Ma Bone drawings!
Get Into It!
Risks and challenges
The Tate Modern performance on 24th June is all ready to go, as are the Liverpool rehearsals. So our Kickstarter project is dedicated entirely to funding the producing of the album and then pressing the CDs and vinyl for our backers.
All of the pieces are in place - we just need your help to make everything a bit more Dogsy!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
