About this project
Shortly Thereafter is a collection of poetry documenting my experiences serving a combat tour in Afghanistan, and the impact those had on my life after I returned to the civilian world. It was the winner of the 2012 Main Street Rag Poetry Book Award and will be released in October, but it doesn't have a cover! While the addage urges us not to judge books by their covers, the reality is that covers can seriously impact a book's sales. Because of that, I'm looking to hire an artist to design my cover, something that doesn't come cheaply. I have my eye on an up-and-comer, with the goal that his work will help my book sell, and my book's success will help further his career. Art is symbiotic in so many ways.
This book is obviously important to me, but the response it's received from the veteran community already (through my readings and lectures) makes me think that it can have a real impact in this country by helping veterans heal, and by giving civilians a glimpse of what war is really like as a human experience. But before that can happen, it needs a cover. Help a writer, help an artist, help a community, and help make positive change.
The book will be distributed nationally to Barnes & Noble, as well as independent booksellers this fall (October). If you have a favorite local bookstore, let me know and I'll work to make the book available there. It will also be available on http://Amazon.com and through the publishers website, where it is currently available for pre-order at a discounted rate:
