What Happens Immediately After Kickstarter?

Hello delightful backers!

The engine of Highways & Byways continues to purr as we cruise toward our funding goal. We’re right in the middle of the Kickstarter campaign right now. This is an excellent time to think about what happens afterward to make a smooth transition afterward.

Based on a mix of reviews, comments, Kickstarter messages, and social media posts I’ve seen in the last few weeks, I have a handful of subtle game improvements to introduce to Highways & Byways. They are small enough to be introduced in the two week period that comes after funding but before receiving funds. They are:

  • Add some distance between spaces on the northeast region of the board. That would make it a little less crowded. This won’t modify gameplay – just usability!
  • Update the Byway Cards to reflect the slight changes to the board layout.
  • Introduce a “Fast Draft” rule variant. Some players prefer the Driving Stage of the game to the Planning Stage. This would give them the option to abbreviate the Planning Stage and go right into the Driving Stage.
  • Check all the rules for typos. You can never proofread too much!

One last quick thing! For those of you who are interested in tuning in, a quick reminder that there is a Highways & Byways live-stream on Saturday, April 7 at 3:00 pm EDT with Retsy Reiver.

As always, thank you for reading and thank you for your support! I really appreciate every single dollar pledged and every kind message.

Hey Michael! Glad you like you liked the update :)

I think framing fast drafting as "beginner mode" or "first-time rules" would be a good idea. People would then get a feel for the Driving Stage before experiencing a full Planning Stage, which would provide useful context for players.

Hi Brandon! Great update. I'm glad to be so informed. If I may, I feel like with a family weight game like this the "fast draft" variant should be framed as a beginners mode of sorts. Like in Catan where they teach an easy version of setup for your first playthrough, and then the "advanced" variant is in the back of the rules. As someone's first game It gets them to the most fun part of the game the fastest and then they can choose to add in another layer of strategy if they want for future games. Too many innovations for families not familiar with a draft mechanic or this type of hand management could be overwhelming for this type of game. The hand management mechanic is what feels exciting here, not the drafting.
