The quick skinny for those on a tight schedule:
The Dregs of Crime is a smaller format comic book (5.5" x 8.5") that will collect 110 improvisational cartoon sketches from Tales From the Dougside cartoonist, Douglas Arthur. It is scheduled to make its debut in August at the Vermont Comic Con in Burlington, VT.
The straight dope for the rest of you:
Hey! It's your old pal Devilish Dougie here with another cool Kickstarter project! A sequel to my last book Pocketful of Crime, a collection of improvisational comic strips.
A little background from the Kickstarter, for those who missed that book:
"For a previous project, We All Travel Time, I created a bunch of Sketch cards for all my backers, These were quick, spur of the moment cartoons that I produced on the back of postcards. Each one was unique, surreal, and maybe a bit odd, too, but they were well received. I had been asked by several folks if I would be collecting them. I hadn't really thought about it. They were meant to be one-of-a-kind rewards for my backers, and I hadn't scanned any of them. They were sent out to the wind…
"The idea of making some kind of book dogged me for a few months, and I found myself creating more sketch cards while I was at conventions to kill the downtime between adoring fans. Last month I ordered a couple of new books by comic book legend Rick Veitch and was inspired by a smaller 5.5" x 8.5" format he used. It seemed to be perfect for collecting the sketch cards, as they were approximately the same size. The smaller size also does not bring with it the same expectations that a full-sized book would bring."
Pocketful of Crime has proven to be one of my most successful books so far, and I had enough material leftover to make a second book, this one.
The Dregs Of Crime will be 110 pages of improvisational comics, very much taking inspiration from such things as the 24-Hour Comic Book, and my own 1-Hour Comic Strips, as well as Rick Veitch's dream comic Rarebit Fiends. Each page starts with a completely blank note card which I will attempt to fill in 10 minutes or less. No thought, just pure comic goodness in every stroke. If the sketch cards I did for my backers last year was any indication, these will be at times horrible, odd, and even, sometimes, funny. In other words, a good book to keep in the crapper.
My current timetable for production:
Creation of the improv strips has already been completed! I had leftovers from Pocketful Of Crime, and I created about 70 more, so I had plenty to choose from! I have already picked out the 110 strips that will be included in the book, and have done a rough layout, in terms of order.
All I have left to do as of this writing is to scan all the art, and plop it into the InDesign template I have made, add an author's note, create a cover, and then upload it all to CreateSpace!
With only 3 reward levels, a short, two week campaign, and a very reasonable goal, it's an easy decision!
And, hey! Stretch goals! Yes, one of the fun things about Kickstarter is the stretch goals that get added on after the original goal is met! ...and I have a few doozies up my sleeve!
Stretch Goal #1 $400: Each backer will receive a page of original artwork directly from the book!
Stretch Goal #2 $500: Each backer will receive THREE (3) pages of original artwork from the book!
Stretch Goal #3 $750: Each backer will also receive a special, limited edition postcard print of the iconic artwork from my landmark compendium, Antisocial Lawnmower!
Thanks for taking the time to check out and back my project, I truly appreciate it!

Risks and challenges
Unless my computer crashes in the next two weeks, this puppy is getting printed! The work is already done! I just need to scan the art and pop it into InDesign before uploading the book to CreateSpace! I have successfully completed three projects so far, and all of them have been on schedule, so back with confidence!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
