About this project
Who Am I?T. Riley Garrett, Specialist in the Army National Guard; where I currently work full time performing military funeral honors. I am an artist in my free time. I have never seriously sold my work, only given pieces away here and there. That is why I am looking forward to this project. For all those that know me, my passion in working with technology is evident. I love beta testing new products, repairing computers, and quite simply exploring the possibilities which technology brings to us.
What is Painting With Glass?
Painting with Glass is a project that I am beginning and it represents a project full of opportunities. Painting with Glass involves the art of painting, with a technologically advanced video recording process (Google Glass)
For each one of the paintings I am creating in this project, I will be posting videos of the painting process. Instead of using a tripod and setting up a video camera like most people, I will be using Google Glass to record my paintings step by step. This presents a more personalized perspective of the painting and this project helps to bring the viewer closer than ever to the artist’s eye. All of my paintings that I design will be recorded with Google Glass and then sped up. I will post each production on my youtube channel.
What is Google Glass?
Google Glass is not like any other video camera out there. Google Glass are innovative eye glasses that contain a camera, a microphone, and a projection screen built into them. So basically this product acts as a head mounted computer that is designed to keep you updated, while also keeping its user free from looking down and missing the world around them. The primary goal of this project, Painting With Glass, is to bridge the gaps between the artist, the artwork, and the viewer - to create an experience where they become one. A secondary goal is once this project is fully funded, I will enhance my previous work to a large-scale painting (dimensions still undecided). To make this painting unique and original, the names of all those who support Painting With Glass will be incorporated in the work.
I am using kickstarter because like many artists know, the material needed for this project are costly. Shipping cost is another number that has to be calculated into the mix especially for the larger paintings. In addition to the material and shipping costs, Google Glass is estimated around $1600. With these costs in mind, I have set a goal to raise $3500 to fund Painting With Glass.
Google Glass is a revolutionary technology and is something that I can use on a daily basis. While the GoPro and other similar products have allowed for this in the past, few have been able to make the process as seamless and non-intrusive as the Google Glass, as its streamlined design allows for the camera to become a part of your body without drawing undue attention to itself, and in my case, without restricting the creative process.
All of my paintings will be painted on canvases using acrylic or oil paint. I am purchasing all my art supplies from locally. The larger size paintings I will paint them on canvas and send them to you rolled up and I will suggest a framer in your area for you.
Here are some examples of some of the sizes:
Risks and challenges
One of the challenges of this project is my lack of experience painting on such a large scale. With that in mind I just have to make sure I don't overwhelm myself. However I am confident that I can overcome this with your support.
Another challenge will be shipping my work to kickstarter backers. For the smaller works I will ship them in flat rate boxes . For the larger paintings I intend to ship them rolled up in a sealed container, and I will look up information for a canvas stretcher in your area. Unless I can find a more cost effective way to ship them framed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
