The Tarot Banksy
WHO is this Banksy guy?
Banksy is an anonymous, but somehow world renowned, street artist from Britain who is widely known for his "art pranks". He has been called the "Most Wanted Artist in the World", and even refers to himself as an "Art Terrorist," which I love because I refer to myself as an "artsy tarotist." The name Banksy ignites controversy, (as does the deck!) and starts conversations because it piques our curiosity. Banksy is undoubtedly the most controversial street artist of our times to emerge on the global stage. The fact that his identity remains unknown after 20 years on the graffiti scene only adds to the intrigue that surrounds his work, and is probably the reason he wishes to remain anonymous. The works of Banksy have appeared in America, Australia, Canada, England, France, Israel, Jamaica and Palestine. Wherever Banksy goes, he makes an impact through his artwork and the meanings behind it. His pictorial and satirical messages cross the boundaries between art, philosophy, politics, sociology, humor and narcissism, which makes for a phenomenal Tarot deck!

Very little is known about Banksy himself, as he refuses to be interviewed and keeps his identity carefully maintained. As a world-renowned mystery man, Banksy has risen through the ranks to become one of the world's greatest street artists. Street art fanatics are consistently satisfied with every piece of art he delivers, though he always leaves them wanting more. This tactic carries one's curiosity to explore a completely new perspective or idea.

Banksy is also called "the godfather" of the new form of pop art that originated on the street. Anyone can see Banksy’s stencil art, which enables him to reach a large audience and to make strong statements in a short amount of time. Much of his work is destroyed because city officials have the power to paint over or allow artwork to stay. Even when his fleeting artwork is destroyed, it draws attention to political issues. Always upping the ante, Banksy breaks all boundaries and takes street art to places where it has never been. Although critics say that Banksy is "merely a vandal" and his work is "dazzlingly clever to idiots," his fame is undeniable. Virtually every aspect of Banksy’s work is controversial, and perhaps that is the secret to his success. To be honest, I have been asked to change two cards already!

WHAT IS THE TAROT BANKSY?
Because much of his artwork is political, (more specifically, it considers and exposes the way that politics affect the human condition), it makes for perfect Tarot cards. Like Tarot, his artwork can be intuitively felt and understood by all humans on a deep, unconscious level and it elicits emotion, either love or hate. It is representative of all the archetypes and situations we are confronted with throughout our lifetime, and I have found that the artwork created by Banksy lends itself to the cards so beautifully.
The Tarot Banksy is a new, innovative deck that connects 78 artworks done by the mysteriously anonymous Banksy that have been combined with the traditional archetypes and meanings associated with each of the 78 Tarot cards. This is a modern deck that is current with the times and struggles of today's society. I originally designed the deck for myself because I wanted a Tarot deck with Banksy’s artwork, but none were available. After searching for quite some time, I decided to take it upon myself to fix that! It has taken a couple years to get this Tarot to take physical form, but the design stage for the cards is now complete. I am finally done with the “conceptualizing-editing-reinventing-editing again-conceptualizing—— hullabaloo” and the deck is ready for print.
The Tarot Banksy is a fully functional deck that follows in the Rider-Waite tradition. The deck is comprised of the world-famous, anonymous street artist’s/social activist’s painted characters, objects, and locations that his paintings reside at, and are an examination of archetype, as well as humankind’s history and future. The cards are powerful because they speak to us at the soul-level, questioning our beliefs and sometimes our fears, and challenging us to be better and to do better. The Tarot Banksy will act as a trigger for personal truths for all humans because it transcends race, community, and even country. The cards provide a marginal space between the real world and one’s interior landscape, and they will challenge all people on many different levels. The many characters presented in the deck include historical and religious figures, children, and men and women of all nationalities. The cards act as an allegory for love, loss, failure, reward, the difference between right and wrong, etc… You can find your own story and path through the artwork and symbolism of Banksy!
I have selected images of Banksy's artwork from as far back as twenty years ago, all the way up to the ones being created today. The visual imagery of The Tarot Banksy represents many ethnicities, creeds, socioeconomic classes, sexualities, gender, ages, and abilities. I've been collecting images and researching intended message behind them to find the particular artwork that will bring The Tarot Banksy to life. One very special aspect of The Tarot Banksy is that, in addition to being useful in gaining insight and intuitive messages, it can be used as a tool for social change. Just pull a card, and open up the guidebook to learn all about that particular piece of art! I've learned so much from my research for this project, and I hope I can share some of my newly-found knowledge with all of you.
Suit of Buckets (Cups)
Suit of Brushes (Wands)
Suit of Spray Cans (Swords)
Suit of Stencils (Pentacles)
These color decks contain 78 unique, borderless Tarot cards, and hopefully stretch goals will be met to include a special card in addition: The Street Artist. All 78 cards will feature a piece of artwork created by Banksy that conveys the energy, messages and symbolism that loosely matches the meanings of the Rider-Waiter-Smith system. The Cards are labeled on the bottoms in an off-white font that looks like it was spray painted on using a stencil. There are four suits, which include Spray Cans (Swords), Buckets (Cups), Brushes (Wands), and Stencils (Pentacles). The cards are printed on heavy-weight 330 GSM matte-finish card stock, with rounded corners. The back of the cards have a design made out of Banksy’s street tag, in a way that allows for reversals.
WHO are you? WHY are you doing this?
Hi, I'm Shilo Lewis. I have a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Art in Art Education. I taught art for 13 years! I LOVE art, and I have officially stepped out of the elementary art classroom in order to pursue my own art as a career. Currently, I'm getting a second graduate degree in Computer Systems to learn how to operate my online business of teaching art-infused Tarot classes that are designed to help people know themselves better and live healthier, more meaningful lives. I strongly believe in the power of art and the Tarot for emotional healing and wellness and it is my ultimate passion as an artist to teach others how to use these resources in this way.
Examples of My Artwork
I also love Tarot cards! They speak seductively to the artist in me! I see each Tarot deck I own as an art gallery that can be carried around in my pocket and used to form self-knowledge and guidance. I've been collecting decks for a while now, and I'm fascinated by the intersection of art, spirituality, and psychology that exists within the Tarot.
I'm also a huge Banksy fan, and I have been following him for over 15 years!
HOW are you going to pull this off?
My funding goal is $5,000, which is what is needed to print the decks with a custom printed tuck box, silver gilding, and softcover full color illustrated guidebook. Any deck and guidebook set that is not reserved for a Backer will be for sale at CooptyLewBazaar's shop on Etsy.
The funding goal includes the costs associated with the time, energy, and materials that I will need in order to make The Tarot Banksy the innovative and beautiful deck that it's meant to be. Also included in the goal are funds for making rewards, such as stickers, pouches, and posters.
What are the rewards?
Each and every Backer will receive exclusive CooptyLew updates! These updates will include previews of card artwork and designs, information about my research, photos and videos of The Tarot Banksy creation process, and more.
The "Standard" reward is gilded in silver and comes in an illustrated tuck box. The "Limited" and "Exclusive" rewards include silver gilding and an illustrated, tuck box that will be designed during this campaign, with Backer assistance, as well as a Limited Edition Tarot bag. Rewards at other levels include, of course, the deck and guidebook set itself,a sticker set, an 11 x 17 poster, or a Limited Edition Tarot pouch!
Stretch Goals: At $10,000 we will create a custom rigid box for all decks. If we raise $12,500 we will be able to have all decks printed with silver and red metallic ink.
Risks and challenges
The Tarot Banksy is ready for print, but my goal for this campaign is to get the decks printed on the best card stock with silver gilded edges, a color guidebook, and an illustrated tuck box. If we meet stretch goals, I would like to switch to a custom rigid box, as well as printing the decks with METALLIC INK!
As with any creative endeavor, there can always be events or circumstances that alter the timeline or momentum of a project. As someone who has created and managed several artistic projects, I feel confident in my abilities to deal with any unforeseen circumstances and deliver all of the rewards to you by Nov. 2018. I will be in regular communication with all Backers regarding the progress of The Tarot Banksy from the beginning of the campaign until the decks are printed and shipped to Backers. However, in the unlikely event that changes to the project's timeline occur, all Backers will be the first to know about it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
