Quilt Stories is a project that has become increasingly difficult to describe as tangents have emerged, defined, and concluded.
It began with a tent, patch-worked inside and out and quilted into a cozy pyramid. The tent was a space for listening, for sharing and recording stories and anecdotes about quilts. Another tent was assembled and they traveled together across the country in search of these stories. Another companion, a white circle quilt, traveled with them, collecting small stitches as the tents collected stories and documented the landscape they traveled through. Bits of the stories were stitched together into songs, and songs began to travel as well. The tent had collected enough stories and became a place of rest, of healing. Clay idols of the tent were shaped in the form of medicine bottles. A soft space was created for visitors to tuck in and listen to the stories, completing the cycle of the collection. The white quilt slowly accumulated the marks of many, and filled to the edges, will find a new purpose as her binding is fastened and the action of stitches completes her form.
With photographs, drawings, transcribed stories, and reflective essays, I would like to make a beautiful and cohesive record of this project. The book will also be an art object to stand on it’s own; each page carefully considered and curated from months of documentation.
I feel that this publication must be the next step for Quilt Stories, summing up as much as possible a piece that has gone in many directions, affecting many people and places. It will be an important way to honor the time myself and others have put into this project, and a way to easily share and pass on the adventures I have had with it. I am interested in making this book a composed visual object, and writing reflective essays to accompany the visuals. I have enjoyed making two small books in this process and would like to spend more time making the next book feel significant.
As you see in the video and online (facebook / flickr), images that will be included in the catalog represent different aspects of the tour; listening to stories, collecting stitches, teaching workshops, hosting quilting slumber parties, photographing the tent in landscapes, making quilt drawings and murals, and performing the songs I have pieced from the stories collected. The one aspect of the tour not represented in my images is the research I have done; visiting quilt museums to study quilts in person, and reading as much anthropological and sociological writing on quilts as I can search out. This writing element of the book will take time and consideration, and I would like to pay other art writers to contribute to the book, as well as assist with editing.
With pre-sale funding I can afford to put the book in some small shops at an affordable price, as well as donate this book to many of the communities that I have involved in the project; the Public Library in small-town Palouse WA, the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln NE, the library of the Textile Center in Minneapolis MN, and others. Because my work is largely interactive and not saleable, grants and fundraising are vital to furthering my career, and this catalog would be a way for me to sell reproducible art that shares what I do.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge I see is editing down the content I have, and laying out the book in a way that is up to my own standards. I will need to download and learn software to design the layout, as well as spend a lot of computer time editing photos and writing. I foresee possible difficulties when ordering a proof and approving it, and I hope that I have made the fundraising goal sufficient enough to cover these costs & time.
I have set delivery date for the catalogs in September- I believe that is a reasonable timeframe for what I need to complete. If there is a delay in production, or the book is finished early, I will be in contact will all project backers.
I think I am qualified to follow through on this project and overcome these potential obstacles. I have proven my reliability to Kickstarter backers in the past, with thoughtful and personal rewards delivered in a timely way, and consistent updates on the process of the project. I see this type of fundraising as commerce- if you back the project you are essentially buying my artwork, and I feel a greater sense of accountability as I work with this community of patrons at my side.
