We're Todd and Julie from El Patio Designs. As gardening enthusiasts and long-time owners of a landscape company, we put plants just about anywhere we could. But we were often frustrated by the lack of stylish options for getting plants more than a few feet off the ground. That's why we developed the EP3 Wraparound Planter; to create an eye-level pop of color and character without the drawbacks of traditional planters and hanging baskets.
Planters that sit on the ground can take up too much space on your landing. And hanging baskets block your windows and spoil the view. Even plant hangers on posts aren't ideal because they use old-fashioned hanging baskets that look out of place on many styles of homes.
To us, the solution was simple—a clean, stylish, great-looking planter that wraps around an existing house post. It had to be adjustable, because many posts aren’t a standard size. But nothing like that existed, so we had to make it ourselves. And when we set our minds to something, it’s best to get out of the way.
After many variations, we arrived at an elegant solution. One interlocking piece used four times, one for each corner of a 4x4 to 6x6 post.
(NOTE: actual measurements of standard 4x4 posts are 3.5" x 3.5". And standard 6x6 posts measure 5.5" x 5.5". It's a construction thing.)
"But what about bigger posts?” you ask? We also created an extender so the Large EP3 can fit 8x8 to 10x10 posts. (Actual measurements for these posts are 7.5" x 7.5" to 9.5" x 9.5". Weird, right? )
And lastly, we created end caps that let you turn one full planter into two front-facing Half-Wraps.
The EP3 is designed with 1/8" walls of recycled polypropylene. This is no flimsy mass-market flower pot—it's nearly five times as thick—and resists flexing, warping, cracking and breaking in extreme temperatures. It's also UV-protected to resist fading. In short, it's built to last.
And installation is easy.
Where it works
The EP3 is great for house posts, fence posts, mailbox posts, arbors, pergolas and more. It's perfect for apartment porches and balconies where floorspace is at a premium. And it can be used on wood or metal posts—just be sure to use the appropriate screws for your post material.
You can also use the EP3 to create a raised garden display or an herb garden you don’t have to bend down for.
Or as a platform for seasonal color and holiday flair.
Where we are in the process
After more than a year in product development, our injection molds are now in production in Moldova. So the product photos you’ve seen here are prototypes, not production samples.
We also have a manufacturing facility in West Virginia standing by, ready to start production when the molds are complete.
And we're offering the EP3 in multiple colors so you can choose which one works best with your home.
We can't promise the product in time for the holidays, but if you want to give them as a gift, we'll email you a gift certificate to put under the tree.

We're a creative couple with a passion for making and building things. Fifteen years ago, we started Santa Clara Landscape Company to indulge our love of plants and flowers. We sold that company three years ago and have now established El Patio Designs to bring the EP3 Planter to market.
We hope you'll join us in bringing the EP3 Wraparound Planter to life. We can't do it without you.
Risks and challenges
Once we've received our first production samples and approved the mold, it will be air-shipped from Moldova to Detroit for texturing. Once texturing is complete, the mold will be sent to the manufacturing facility in West Virginia to begin production. We plan to be onsite when the first product comes off the line to oversee packing and shipping. So unless there's a delay in the texturing process or shipping, we should be on track.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
