About

The Marvel
The Marvel

My project is titled "The Marvel" and it is the story about a junkie named Ford who, one night after a crazy bender at a friends house, robs and beats an old man for prescription meds. He heads home with the drugs and finds a bottle of unmarked pills. Being a somewhat educated junkie, he knows that unmarked pills can either be diabetes or heart medication, both of which are common with the elderly crowd and will kill him, or a painkiller which will get him super high. Being a junkie with little regard for himself, he takes the pills. He blacks out and wakes up on another world in another body. The body he wakes up in is that of the Marvel, specifically the next generation of their greatest hero. See, the pills? From generation to generation, with a few exceptions, have always found the next most worthy individual, the most honorable individual. They didn't find Ford, Ford found them.

The book itself is 385 pages long. If I were to compare it to anything, I would compare it to a comic book, but one without pictures. I realize how dumb that sounds, but if you have ever studied a comic book, really taken a long hard look at how a comic is produced, you can see the little things the writer does to keep the story moving at a good pace. "The Marvel" reads fast. I intentionally tried to keep it going without any real lulls in the story simply because I wanted to do something that I personally would read without falling into a slow point that just kills the story. I wanted it to read like a comic book.

I know that if you just give this a chance, you won't regret it. Not a single person who has read what I have written has had anything negative to say. The litmus test, for me at least, was giving it to people who don't read science fiction and are not interested in the least in comics. Without fail, they loved it. I have tested it out and I have not had a single bad review. The problem that I have is pushing the product. We are living in a tough economy and publishers aren't interested in moving a product that nobody has heard of written by a guy nobody has heard of in a genre they think is niche. I think that's a load of garbage and I am here today pitching my idea to you in an attempt to show them that this isn't niche and can be successful.

The rewards are listed on the side. Most of the money is going towards hiring a cover artist and towards the production of the book. I will also be including special one or two day bonuses for pledging on certain days during my campaign, so stay tuned. Anything above the actual goal is going towards the production of the second book in what I would love to see as a trilogy. As I stated in my video, you can check out the first 9 chapters of my book on my website, www.themarvelbook.wordpress.com. Check it out. Thanks for your time.

Risks and challenges

So here goes nothing! Like any fledgling project, there are going to be risks and challenges. The first risk is naturally budgeting out and staying under cost. I know that there is a chance I can go over the goal, but there is also a chance that I can hit right at goal, and if I don't budget this out perfectly, I'm going to be a sad panda. So I have been super careful with my budgeting. I have to accommodate my cover artist, my printing and e-book costs, ISBNs, compensating my editor, tshirts and other swag and of course, the cost for the max donation rewards. Also, there is the additional money I have to take off the top to make sure that Kickstarter, my favorite online crowdsourcer, is compensated appropriately.
The only major challenge I have had to fight with is the artist. Right now, my goal is to find a way to get Peter Lloyd on board as my official cover artist. He is an AMAZING painter based out of Australia and it would be such a treat to have him rendering the cover. If you get a chance, pop over to his site, www.lloyd-art.com. I am so truly impressed with everything I see on his site and again, this is a must have that I am waiting to hear back from. I had a few other people in mind until I stumbled on his stuff and now this is my challenge, to obtain his services for my cover. ***UPDATE!!! Peter Lloyd is on board! Outside of those things, it really is just a matter of promoting this thing like mad and just doing everything I can to be as noisy as possible to make this happen. I love this project like mad and I want this more than anything I have ever wanted before.
