Let's start from the beginning. I'm a hardcore fan of RPG and I still play D&D campaigns with my friends. Every time I talk about this kind of games with other people they seem interested but just give up when they see the amount of pages to be read; the most determined of them go mad anyway when I say "you know, there are dozens of additional manuals" with additional rules, additional stuffs and more.

So I decided to use my long-term experience and make a light handbook to let people learn all game rules, create a character and go into action into a maximum of 10 minutes. That was and still is my fundamental commitment every time I write down something for LUDOS project. Here's the story of how my project was born, if you're only interested in the project itself just scroll down to find the info you need to know.

First of all I decided to use only a type of dice, the six-sided one, because everyone has somewhere old boardgames and 99% of them have those dices in their boxes.

Next, I thought about the core system. It was difficult to put together classes variables, probability to land a hit and damage amount and I needed a lot of beta testing with my friends, but in the end I managed to write down a light system where you choose your specialization before and during battles you only need to do a single throw of dices to determine the output of the attack/defence and damage.

Then I needed to find a method to reflect the growth of the characters, because LUDOS is meant for one-shot sessions and for long-term campaigns. I cut down every reference to levels system and preferred a experience system where you earn points to spend later in attributes, so there are infinite ways to improve a character.

A important decision I had to make was about the magic. My first intention was to make a no-magic system and so I did for the Starter Edition, but later on I decided to write down a expansion set fully dedicated to magic so everyone can choose among a warfare based setting or a fantasy experience or a mix of them.

The combat system is neat, I tried it with people with no background on RPG and everyone said it's easy to learn and master.

The skills system is, again, simple: you put some points in them and when asked just roll the dices to reach the difficulty level of the task.

Final moves were writing down equipment and how to use objects, regular prizes of wares, some rules about tactics in battle, different weapons and armor conditions etc etc.

My biggest gratification is that I managed to put togheter all these things in a handbook of ten pages (for the Starter Edition) including cover and character sheet, and every time I tried LUDOS with new people all of them read it, wrote the sheet and started to play in ten minutes.

So why I started a project on Kickstarter?
Well my work is not so far from being complete, I'm still writing the expansion handbooks. This project is funding my ideas for major improvements about two important parts of a pen and paper RPG:

1. Graphic artworks for classes, races, equipments and many more, like a good looking version of the character sheet

2. Translation in english

One of the rewards is the 0.9c version of the Starter Edition. As you can see my handbooks lack the graphic compartment, I used some free pics from deviantart but now I believe it will be better to let some artist do the job, I already know a friend of mine who can (you can see some of her works on facebook, search for Arthemys Lunae). And of course my handbooks need a translation in english, I'm not so good at it (as you can read here) but here too I have a friend with a degree who can do the job.

Here is my project. Of course you need to know the status of my works, that's why I set the release date around october of this year.

-Starter Edition (90%) Everything is done, it lacks only the graphic enhancements for classes, equipment and character sheet.
-Game Master Book (70%) Better explained rules, new battle conditions and tactics, a pre-made campaign in a unique setting already written, it lacks the graphic work and some rearrangement in chapters.
-Power of Magic (60%) Expansion set fully dedicated to magic, new classes, new equipment, some new rules; I already have the ideas handwritten, and of course I need the graphic enhancements.
-Races & Classes (85%) All written for races implementation and new classes (one dedicated to animal companions, one to poison mastery, one to a psion-bard mix), just need the graphic artworks.
-Advanced LUDOS (55%) It's a complete collection of all the handbooks with full rebalance and graphic artworks, of course I need to finish the other handbooks first but most of the graphic artworks will already be made at this point.

Risks and challenges

To be honest the only risk about this project is a delay for the release date because I know some people who can help me with graphic and translation works but I don't know if they can complete the jobs in five months. I think it's a safe period but if it's not I will need to contact some other people.
