About this project
Coming Soon: Cartesian® available at cartesianscarf.com
1 - ORIGINAL: Invented (and PATENTED) by architect A.Trelease, the Cartesian® is SUPER SOFT and made with the highest levels of comfort & quality.
2 - DESIGNED TO LAST : The Cartesian® is hand-finished and made entirely of 100% imported Italian extra fine Merino wool (yes, the good stuff) developed especially for the Cartesian®. Over 100 yards of our custom yarn are used to knit one scarf, with no other materials added. THERE ARE NO WIRES AND THE SCARF IS SOFT, NOT STIFF. The scarf's tensile ability is a unique part of the knitting design.
Cartesian® is cutting out the middleman. Luxury scarves of this quality typically sell for $150 - $250.
We've created something totally new.
3 - INNOVATIVE: Its 3D design allows you to create lots of incredible styles.
4 - HYPER-FLEXIBLE: A scarf you can twist, wrap, flip and bend.
5 - NIFTY: It doubles as an exquisite head-wrap.
6 - FUNCTIONAL: It maintains warmth without restricting movement or creating bulk. The Cartesian® is 5" wide, with an outside circumference of 62" when laid flat.
What is It?
The Cartesian® is a whole new concept in luxury neckwear. Invented (and patented) by architect A.Trelease, the design of the scarf is equal parts form and function, and has several unusual properties based on its unique patented structure.
The Cartesian® is a new scarf designed to conform to the contours of the neck and shoulders and frame the face. It maintains warmth without restricting movement or creating bulk. It can assume and hold many sculptural shapes limited only to the imagination of the wearer. It even works as a head wrap.
It's super soft & feels great.
. . . And it’s made with custom 100% imported Italian extra-fine Merino wool developed especially for Cartesian®. It's super soft & feels great against the skin.
The problem with traditional flat scarves is that they really don’t work that well, they’re bulky and they fall away from the neck. We were hoping to develop an accessory that would hold its shape and could be worn on anyone, anywhere, dressed up or down.
For architect Anne Trelease, 50% of the appeal of design is function. She wanted to develop something flexible to wear at meetings, or to the market, dressed up or down, open or wrapped. In addition, the new scarf had to be elegant AND functional.
How does it work?
In order for a scarf to conform to the curves of the neck and shoulders, it had to be 3-Dimensional, instead of a conventional flat shape. After much experimentation, we discovered that creating a differential in knit tension between opposing sides along the length of the scarf produced this effect.
The differential in knit tension creates a permanent built-in curvature throughout the entire scarf that allows the scarf to maintain its shape using different wrapping methods.
Over 100 prototypes were made. We experimented with stitches, tension, yarn types, weights, colors and overall proportions of the scarf. The weight of the yarn and the stitch tension greatly affected the sculptural ability / qualities of the scarf body, as well as its overall appearance.
Our extensive experimentation yielded a product that is unique, beautiful and very comfortable.
The reaction to the Cartesian® Original Scarf is overwhelming. People of all ages ask us where they can get one.
Have fun, stay warm . . .
Risks and challenges
REQUEST: The money raised from Kickstarter will be used to purchase inventory for our first production run. This is our first business venture and we need your support to help get us started. We're asking that you please consider the new Cartesian® Scarf.
For our initial run, we have limited quantities available in our signature architectural colors Classic Red and Charcoal Grey. We intend to ramp up production slowly, without sacrificing quality control (each scarf is hand-finished).
Thank you so much for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
