I built my first electric bicycle years ago to allow me to commute around Pittsburgh, up steep hills and to the far edges of town without breaking a sweat and without spending any money on gas. From the first moment I instantly knew I had a love affair with electric bicycles. That's when I became hooked.
What I love most about electric bicycles is that at the end of the day, it's still a bicycle! I can pedal my eBike whenever I want, but if I get tired or I feel like riding up a hill at 20 mph, I can just turn the throttle and take off! I can still get exercise whenever I want, but I can also have the experience of an electric motorcycle in a sleek, stealthy package. I couldn't believe that all of this could be had in one bike, and for so cheap too!
Since my first eBike experience I've continued moving forward in the eBike world. I've gone on to build hundreds of eBikes for all types of people, founded an eBike startup and for the last year I've been volunteering time to teach people to build their own eBikes. By working with beginners, I quickly began to learn what areas new eBike builders had trouble with and where they needed the most help.
Using all of these experiences, I decided to write an eBike e-book called "The Ultimate Do It Yourself Ebike Guide" which I specifically designed for complete beginners to help everyone learn to build their own eBike. My book wound up being well over a hundred pages and full of pictures, side tips, fun facts and everything a beginner needs to know from the planning and part-sourcing stages to the parts buying, installing and testing of an eBike.
I used Kickstarter to successfully fund the printing of the paperback, and so far I've gotten great reviews. One of the rewards I offered was a short video of me converting a regular bicycle to an electric bicycle. People found it so helpful that it gave me the idea to create an entire video series on building ebikes -- something like an entire class to teach people how to build ebikes -- but instead of going to class you just play the video lessons. My vision is approximately 18 lessons, each between 10-30 minutes each (some will have to be longer with more information and detailed demonstrations).
This is the next logical step for me in producing these ebike resources that I love to create. I think spreading information on electric bicycles is important to helping improve our cities, and that's why I've spent so much time and energy on these pursuits. Now I want to produce this video course and make it that much easier for beginners to convert their first electric bicycle.
However, I can't do it without you. Camera equipment rentals and filming space is expensive, not to mention all the parts I'll need for demonstration. Risks and challenges
This is my second Kickstarter project, and my first was a great success so I come into this process with some good experience already. Still, I've tried to make my delivery deadlines reasonable to ensure I can deliver on my promises.
