Did you know that deafness in children still occurs in significant numbers? Approximately one in 1,000 children are born deaf in the United States every year. These kids cannot hear the loudest sounds like a police car siren or a fire alarm.
In the first few years of life, hearing is a critical part of kids' social, emotional, and cognitive development. Even a mild or partial hearing loss can affect a child's ability to speak and understand language. If you have any doubt about your child's hearing, it is very important to have it tested as soon as possible. This will help avoid any delays in his or her language acquisition and learning.
The I Can Hear You film project is a very personal one, based on experiences of a family raising a daughter who was diagnosed profoundly deaf when she was 1 1/2. Her parents were in denial about this diagnosis at first. A month later, they came to the realization it was necessary to make important decisions about how their daughter would learn to communicate and started researching implanted hearing devices. Since the decision involved surgery, the parents faced a dilemma on whether to proceed.
