Portrait series of the eclectic group of characters at Ditch Plains, shot from my unique perspective within the Ditch Witch food truck.
ABOUT VIEW FROM THE WINDOW...
During the 2012 summer season, I photographed the vast and eclectic group of characters present at Ditch Plains beach in Montauk, New York. All of the photographs were taken from inside my family-owned food truck, the Ditch Witch. The service window of the Ditch Witch served as a pseudo photo booth, and allowed for the subjects to open up easily because many were already familiar with me and the surroundings. Montauk is a one-of-a-kind fishing village located on the eastern end of Long Island. My mother has been known to characterize the town with this quote: "There are three guys at a local bar- One is a fisherman, one is a construction worker, and the other is a millionaire. The beauty of Montauk is that you will never be able to tell who is who." Due to Montauk's recent popularity, this is changing. This project is my attempt at capturing the simplicity and beauty of Montauk, and all I have ever known. It is this sense of community that is special to Montauk, and makes me proud and blessed to have grown up there. While taking photographs I had 3 goals: 1) Photograph the vast and eclectic group of characters at Ditch Plains from an unique perspective, 2) try to exemplify the simplicity of Montauk where you can't tell famous artists and musicians from the everyday man, and 3) document the wonderful and unique community of Ditch Plains. I shot over 100 portraits of many different types of people ranging from tourists and children to fisherman, surfers, and other local characters to modern artists, authors, photographers, and musicians. My goal is to self publish the best portraits into a photo book as well as having a gallery opening and book release party on Memorial Day Weekend 2013 at Outeast Gallery in Montauk.
WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT THIS PROJECT...
- Because the photographs are my best work to date and I feel a strong need to share them.
- Because this project gives you an insider perspective of the Ditch Plains culture surrounding the Ditch Witch food truck.
- Because this is an opportunity for people to view my work from my own personal and unique perspective.
I am born and raised in the small fishing village of Montauk, New York, but I am currently living in Charleston, South Carolina where I am a senior at the College of Charleston, majoring in Anthropology. Photography has always been a hobby of mine, but became a true passion when I was introduced to the underground skateboard scene of Charleston in 2009. I began photographing the various skate sessions and characters, further fueling my passion for photography. I have had several photos from these sessions published in Thrasher and Juice skateboard magazines.
Every year since I was old enough to physically lift a case of water I have worked for my family's business, the Ditch Witch food truck on Ditch Plains beach. My mother started the Ditch Witch when I was 3 years old and the sand surrounding the wagon was my day care. Now I am part owners of the business with my mother and work together with her every summer. The DItch Witch has been considered the epicenter of gossip, small town news, politics, a lost and found, a place where disputes are settled, and the best food on the beach. This unique place raised me, and the View from The Window is a look at the diverse mix of people that contribute to the unique culture surrounding the DItch Witch from my eyes.

The challenge I must face when completing this project is designing and self publishing my first book. Thankfully a graphic designer friend of mine has committed to helping me with the designing aspects of the project. Receiving this help will greatly help me with having a finished book by Memorial Day Weekend 2013.
