Inferno City Firehouse, a 70-page, black-and-white, truly original one shot graphic novel that takes you inside the lives of real Detroit firefighters - true stories fused together with fiction into a breathtaking narrative!
/streCHin/ (Slang) Definition:
In Detroit, when we get a working fire, we tell central that we are stretchin' on whatever it is we are going to work on. So for example, when we pull up to a house fire, we'd say, "Engine 33 stretchin' on a two flat going throughout."
This story takes place in southwest Detroit at the historic Engine 33/Ladder 13 firehouse. Mark is tasked with supplying a turkey for the station’s traditional Thanksgiving dinner and family get-together. We’re introduced to the firehouse and its crew as they grapple with Mark’s unexpected guest, a live turkey. We mainly focus on three firefighters as they deal with life-changing and emotionally crippling events.
Harry, in a miserable marriage, loves his two kids, but finds himself having an affair as he tries to mask the pain his wife has caused him. These webs of distractions will have a tragic effect on Harry’s focus at work. What will Harry do as he fights his depression and suicidal thoughts?
After years of dealing with emotional stress and severe psychological shock, Chris is trying to cope with PTSD. After dozens of fires, drug overdoses, and car accidents, what hope is there for Chris as he continues to become cynical and jaded?
Greg’s a fun, loving, and creative guy who loves his wife, Mary, but Greg, no longer wanting to have children after a horrific apartment fire, starts to shut her out.
Firefighters come into strangers’ lives at their most desperate times. Doing their best to rescue, protect, and help in any way possible, but what happens to these strangers as they hand them over to the police or EMS? It would be too heavy of a burden to follow up with all of the people they risk their lives for day in and day out, but sometimes these strangers become important parts of their personal lives and their healing.
TWO MAGNIFICENT COVERS TO CHOSE FROM
This book is Dedicated to all the brave men and women who risk their lives in service of those who are in need.
In loving memory of my Grandfather, Joseph Otto Lau
He served 26 years in the Detroit Fire Department and retired in 1968 as a Senior Lieutenant.
This is not a work of exaggerated propaganda created in order to persuade people into becoming firefighters or to idolize firefighters as super-humans. This is a look at the reality of what firefighters go through; how they all handle the pain and suffering they face in different ways. My goal is to share some of the burdens they face so we will gain more of a respect for the extraordinary service they offer the world, however they fail or succeed.
I gathered the true stories from many firefighters that I’ve known personally, as well as personal experiences from my childhood. In addition to everything my grandfather (above) told me, I have also lived with a Detroit firefighter, I’ve done work for the department in the past, and I’ve stayed at the Engine 33/Ladder 13 firehouse for several ride-alongs during my research.
The Fight Against PTSD and Depression
Anyone of us can, but probably will find ourselves facing some kind of traumatic event, God forbid, leaving us vulnerable to the deceptive temptations of despair, especially firefighters, police officers, and those who work in the emergency medical services. With this book, we are fully dedicated to HELPING all who are struggling with PTSD and/or depression. First, by donating 20% of all profits to several PTSD and depression treatment centers. Secondly, by bringing awareness to the problem, in hopes to lessen the stigma associated with these conditions.

The pencils and layouts are masterfully crafted by Erwin J. Arroza. Erwin has the perfect style for this gritty novel based on true stories. I'm extremely honored to be working with him again. I've been working with Erwin on Staunch Ambition for years now and consider him to be a great friend.
The alternate cover was skillfully painted by Neal Anderson. Neal has established himself as an amazing master of color while working on Staunch Ambition. Having him as the colorist brings supernatural life to every page.
I can't believe this will be the second book that Clayton Crain and I have worked on. Clayton is famous for his superior covers, especially for his Marvel covers featuring Spider-Man, Venom, and Carnage!
Tracy Konopka, our editor, is the owner of There, Their & They're, where they edit, proofread, review, transcribe, prepare your written works: comics, scripts, reports, graphic novels, books, website content, etc. A great editor is such a crucial part of producing a professional quality novel.
My name is Brian E. Lau, the creator/writer/letterer of Inferno City Firehouse. I’m also the creator/writer/letterer of Staunch Ambition, a full-color, science-fiction graphic novel - what happens when human innovation transcends its physical limitations and enters the supernatural.
So far, through three successful Kickstarters, I have self-published four issues of Staunch Ambition, along with posters and original music. Working hard, I've been able to develop a strong presence on social media, participate in many conventions across several states, and stay involved with the local stores in my community, building a dedicated audience.
A truly original graphic novel that will punch you in the gut! Packed full of character development, epic action sequences, and beautiful art!
Inferno City Firehouse is noticeably unique and will have the marketable advantage of appealing to a fan base that’s been sorely neglected in comics. We can see the desire for stories about firefighters on television and in movies. Not only will this book attract comic book fans of many types, it will also grab the interest of people who simply have a certain respect and appreciation for those whom have served our country in the fire department, police department, armed forces, or other divisions. Many comic book readers have personally served or have a loved one who’s served. Fiction can be powerful, but when a story is based on true events, it can have a deeper, more profound effect on the reader. Inferno City Firehouse is a collection of true stories connected together through fiction in order to make one self-contained story. It also leaves open the possibility for follow-up books centered on other areas of Detroit or other major cities.
We THANK ALL OF OUR FANS for their continued support.
