About

For some, an arcade is a place of flashing lights, amped-up soundtracks, adrenaline, and the clatter of buttons being mashed by complete strangers. For others it’s an alternate universe: It’s a place where you can experience the sweet victory of smashing a final boss with new friends. It’s a place where the fate of kingdoms rest on the edge of your last quarter. And as kids, it was a space that was entirely ours, right down the architecture and design. It was a 2nd home for our childhood.

It’s a space we want to bring back to Cleveland.

For some of us, our arcade experience was Marc’s Funtime Pizza Palace, Chuck E. Cheese's, or even the arcade at Geauga Lake. For others this was a single pinball machine in a hotel lobby or a dimly lit cabinet in the corner of a restaurant. But with the collapse of arcade gaming and its final demise during the 1990’s, the opportunity to rekindle this experience and the feelings that come with it in ourselves, our friends, and our children, has been near impossible. While there are large corporate game centers that include full restaurants and bars, the magic of the old-school retro arcade isn't quite there. Our urge for nostalgia just isn't quite satisfied. We need the classics: we need The Simpsons Game, X-Men, Street Fighter II, Pac Man, and the other favorites we played as kids.

And that’s why we want to do this right. But a project this size needs the help of a community. And that’s why we’re asking for Cleveland’s help.

Through Kickstarter we’re hoping to fund the installation and 30-day operation of a 1990’s retro arcade right in the heart of our fair city. We’re going to have all the great games you remember growing up, we’re going to have tournaments, music, events, and other opportunities to bring the city together. We’re going to light up the summer night with the glow of cabinets and pinball and create a neighborhood space. We’re going to share what we love with you to remind you of what you loved as a child: late nights of fun!

Objective:

The primary goal of this project is to develop social connections within the local community using a novel space – a retro 1990’s arcade in downtown Cleveland – that will invigorate local business, inspire other creative projects, create a public space friendly toward community dialog and social events, and generate funding for charities that serve women and at-risk youth.  This project will also spark new dialog in the alternative business sector on the use of temporary public spaces for fundraising and bolster acceptance of public improvement initiatives that manifest from non-traditional event methodology.

Where do you come in?

Our focus is to create a temporary space for the community where people can interact, make new friends, have fun, and remember one of our favorite parts of childhood: playing video games. In order for something like that to be successful we need the support of the city – because without it, it won’t go anywhere. We need people like you to come in, play the games, and make new connections.

By crowd-sourcing this project we’re asking people to make an investment, to connect with us, and to give them a piece of what we've got planned. By being a part of this we’re hoping that it feels like your space, too. And by helping we hope to reward your support with some really awesome apparel and events.

How will the money be spent?

We anticipate costs to be spread across three major categories: machine purchasing and maintenance; rental space, leasing, and utility costs; and licensing and supply costs.

One of the biggest costs associated with this project is the acquisition of the arcade machines.  If we could rent all of the machines, we’d do it – but we can’t. While pinball does have a healthy rental industry, arcade games do not.  For some people these machines are collectors’ items.  And because the machines are as old as they are, lots of love had to be put into some just to get them to work.  The majority of costs will go to this category.

Acquiring space and covering costs associated with the location is also important.  Overall this shouldn't be much of the budget, but is significant enough considering where we’d like this installment to be housed.  We need a place with high foot-traffic in one of the up-and-coming parts of town: Ohio City, Tremont, or Gordon Square.  These places are friendly to pedestrians, have vibrant nightlife along major traffic areas, and are inviting to people who live outside of the city in the exurbs.  By situating the arcade in one of these places we’re exposing people to additional talent and entertainment near the downtown area.

Finally, supply and licensing costs will be another major category.  In order to recreate the feel of a 1990’s arcade, transforming whatever space we end up with will be crucial.  We’re envisioning neon lights, pop-corn, merchandise, couches, CRT televisions, classic gaming consoles... THE WORKS! And for this we need donations to make it happen.

We understand that this project has a sizable price-tag, especially for a small city in the Rustbelt.  Cleveland’s been hurting for years now, economically and socially. There are a lot of needs in this city that don’t get met and as Clevelanders we’re painfully aware of this on a daily basis (which is why all profits at the end of the project will be donated to charities).  But we have faith that the city can help pull together to fund this.  We’re a city that cheers on the underdog, a city where fans sit through burning heat or a snowstorm (read: average day in Cleveland) to show support and love for what we believe in: that you can do anything with enough heart.  If this can happen outside of a bustling metropolis, then it can happen in Cleveland.  It will be difficult, but we can do it with your help.

Risks and challenges

Time: One of the biggest problems we face is machine age. Several of the games we've identified for this project are old (upwards of 30 years for some) and have their fair share of battle scars from use. As we identify machines we’re trying to obtain the best cost to quality ratio while full well knowing the problems we will inevitably face. Machines will break down, will require replacement parts, and may even be inoperable after purchase. We've considered this by identifying individuals who will be helpful in their repair and maintenance.
