Stretch Goal Added!!
If we reach 75k backers can upgrade to NSF-53 certified filters for chlorine, taste, odor, fluoride, lead and other volatile organic compounds (VOC's)! There are just a few days left, support now!
Hello Kickstarter Community! I need your help to create the future of the water bottle: a sustainable, sleek bottle that filters your water as you drink it.
Standard reusable bottles are great for the environment and save you money that would otherwise go to over-priced and environmentally costly bottled water—but it’s still on you to fill them with pure, great-tasting water.
It’s time for a better solution.
I’ve designed the WELLY Bottle to be exactly that: an easy-to-carry, reusable, BPA-free water bottle with a built-in filter made from activated and carbonized coconut shells that purifies your water as you drink it. The compressible bamboo hand-panels on the front and back not only look and feel distinctive, but they also allow you to accelerate water flow when you need it most.
Now I just need your help to get it off the ground!
WELLY’s story begins with my mom Ellen (my Dad called her 'Elly'), who passed away in 2012 from liver cancer after a life filled with philanthropy and community involvement in my hometown of Pittsburgh. I saw first-hand the impact that the impurities and toxins that saturate so much of our lives can have on a person—a person who also taught me a lifelong lesson in the importance of doing something good for the world.
As painful as this experience has been, it inspired me to make something that would help people purify their lives. I had already become frustrated with the incredibly wasteful bottled water industry and decided to create a bottle that is cleaner for your body and cleaner for the environment.
This inspiration comes together in our name. WELLY pays tribute to the wells that symbolize humanity’s long relationship with water, as well as the kinds of wells that charity: water builds in the developing world. WELLY also stands as a statement of the power of wellness in invigorating life. Finally, and for me most importantly, WELLY honors and continues the legacy begun by my dear mom Elly.
The Design: Purity Meets Usability
This starts with the highly absorbent filter, made entirely from coconut shells, that strips away chlorine, odor and other impurities that contaminate the naturally pure taste of clean water. Our filter is independently certified by the stringent standards of NSF International, which has collaborated for years with the World Health Organization on global water issues. Each filter provides two months (or 40 gallons!) of clean water, and you’ll be able to find replacement filters on our website individually or as part of a subscription plan.
We then designed our bottle to be a joy for someone who’s serious about staying hydrated while active and on the go. We know from personal experience what it’s like to crave pure water after a run, a session in the yoga studio or a long hike. That’s why we’ve built in a bunch of unique (patent pending) features such as:
- A mouthpiece that is protected within the bottle’s cap, ensuring it stays clean, yet easily accessible by tapping the bottle’s trigger
- Bamboo hand panels you can squeeze to accelerate water flow
- A finger loop that makes carrying your bottle by hand or on a carabiner easy and secure
- Feet on the bottle’s bottom for stability
- An opening large enough to accommodate ice cubes
- A slim profile to minimize the space required to carry the bottle in a bag or purse
And, of course, the entire bottle is absolutely BPA and phthalate free.
Our Commitment: Purification Beyond The Bottle
We’re delighted to put the ability to purify your own water supply in the palm of your hand, but we know that the issue of water purity is global in scope as 748 million people currently don’t have access to clean water. That’s why we’re humbled and excited to link up with charity: water, one of the world's leading organizations working on global water safety today. charity: water‘s work has already impacted over 5 million people in 24 countries, they operate with full transparently, and with their help, we can show you exactly what projects your money helps to fund (like this one).
$1 of every WELLY bottle sold, and a percentage of every future filter sold, will go straight to charity: water, where 100% of the donations will directly fund sustainable clean water solutions.
Our Values: Sustainability At Every Turn
We crafted every element of our business model with a focus on sustainability. Our bamboo itself is one of the most rapidly renewable resources on the planet and a source of economic opportunity for over 800,000 people, and it comes only from suppliers using sustainable harvesting practices. Our filters are made entirely from coconut shells rather than the wasteful million-year-in-the-making coal filters found in many filtration systems today. Finally, all of our packaging is made with recycled content that dramatically reduces WELLY’s carbon footprint.
We’re done with the initial design and are excited to green light production—we just need you!
We need your help to bring this vision of a purer world to life. By helping to fund WELLY Bottle, you’ll not only be among the first to get this awesome bottle, but you will also be supporting:
- A world in which we don’t need to settle for choosing either sustainability or water quality
- A business model that views sustainability as mandatory, not just nice-to-have
- The fight against a major global humanitarian problem: the water crisis
Thank you for your support!
With sincerity and determination,
Ben and the WELLY Team

Risks and challenges
Our primary remaining challenge is to make sure all parts fit with extreme precision in order to optimize usability and performance. Currently, we have some fine-tuning to do in this area, but do not anticipate any major roadblocks.
We have taken every precaution to make sure our bottles meet strict quality standards. All materials are certified BPA-free and phthalate-free and our bamboo is sustainably harvested. We anticipate a production timeline of 10 weeks after reaching our goal, and then a shipping timeline of 6 weeks, which includes preparing the shipments at our fulfillment house in Massachusetts. From there, we will rely on USPS to ship our products domestically and around the world.
We are confident with this timing, plus or minus a few weeks. We have managed out the unknowns to the best of our abilities, but as people who care deeply about our product and reputation, we will communicate with you throughout the process so that you know exactly when to expect your shipment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
