Introducing 3Doodler 2.0
When we first launched 3Doodler we asked the world to imagine a pen that you could literally lift off the page to create real three dimensional objects; a pen that put the power of a 3D printer in the palm of your hand.
Two years later, we’ve made the world’s best 3D printing pen even better, with a new version that's slimmer, lighter, quieter and even easier to use.
Oh, and just like the original 3Doodler, it's still by far and away the most affordable way to 3D print. With 3Doodler 2.0 we’re continuing to make 3D creation and 3D design accessible to everyone!
How does it work?
Compact and easy to use, the 3Doodler extrudes heated plastic that cools almost instantly into a solid, stable structure; and with no computers or software needed, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Simply plug your 3Doodler into a power socket and start drawing anything within minutes.
If you can scribble, trace or wave a finger in the air you can use a 3Doodler.
But you don't need to take our word for it...
Since we first showed the world that drawing in 3D was possible, we have sold over 130,000 3Doodlers. Our community has been using their 3Doodlers to create amazing things, going far beyond even our wildest expectations: from jewellery, to fully 3Doodled remote control planes, 3Doodled dresses, architectural models, and even writing braille! The creative possibilities are endless (and at times a tad unusual too!).
So just like the Backstreet Boys, 3Doodler's back, alright!
It was thanks to the support of the Kickstarter community that we were able to make the 3Doodler dream a reality. It was also here on Kickstarter that we began the process of building a vibrant community of artists, makers, designers, educators, as well as others eager to lift their imaginations off the page. Doodle by Doodle you have pushed the boundaries of 3D art and creation and inspired us further!
To say a big thank you for all of your help and inspiration, we decided to come back to the place where it all began, and bring 3Doodler 2.0 to you first! We are eternally grateful for all the support you gave us the first time around, and want to give you first dibs at creating with the new 3Doodler. What’s new with 3Doodler 2.0?
Completely redesigned from top to bottom, 3Doodler 2.0 is the result of over two years of research and development, and feedback from thousands of users. Our aim? To give you the best 3Doodling experience ever! The result? A smaller, more ergonomic, and even more kick-ass 3D pen. We've also housed the new 3Doodler in a sleek metallic casing, so that it's jaw-droppingly beautiful and feels great in your hands.
And there's lots more...
As well as being the world's smallest 3D printing pen, we've packed the new 3Doodler with loads of other enhancements for smoother doodling in every dimension:
- a fully re-engineered drive system (the part that feeds the plastic through the pen), for even smoother 3Doodling
- an entirely new nozzle design, for better performance and crisper Doodles. As well as being technologically better it also looks way cooler
- enhanced and quieter airflow, to cool your plastic more efficiently and make it even easier to Doodle in the air from the get-go
- dual speed control, for a more customized Doodling experience (and specially for those of you who just can't get enough speed!)
- a new double-click function for continuous flow, so that you can Doodle non-stop without having to hold down any buttons
- manual temperature optimization, for minor flow adjustments and expertly consistent 3D Doodles
- more efficient and stable heating (or in other words, no stopping and starting while doodling!) and
- drastically reduced power consumption, under half the voltage of the original 3Doodler
It's also easier to use than ever before thanks to a whole host of other design adjustments. These touch on everything from the shape of the pen, which allows you to Doodle into really tight corners, the more intuitive button design, as well as the positioning of the LED indicator light and cooling fan.

With the launch of the new 3Doodler on Kickstarter, we are also releasing a series of exciting new accessories to supercharge (and beautify) your 3Doodling. These include:
- a DoodleStand for your pen and plastic
- a JetPack, a portable power pack that gives you the freedom to Doodle on the go (2 hours of non-stop portable Doodling with ABS and 3 hours with PLA!)

So which pledge level is right for you?
We’ve tried to create pledge levels to suit everyone, from the novice Doodler to the seasoned designer or engineer, and for those of you looking for a bit of 3Doodling fun. Simply scroll down the right-hand side of the page and pick the combination of plastics and accessories that fits you best.
Every pledge level comes bundled with a mix of 3Doodler PLA and ABS plastic strands so that you can start 3D drawing right away!
Each pledge level is limited to one pledge per backer. However we have also created special double pledge levels for the 3Doodler 2.0, Accessorize, JetSetter and PowerDoodler rewards, as well as a special Family Pack with four pens and a bunch of accessories + plastic strands.

The teaching potential that comes with being able to draw in a new dimension has been truly inspiring, and something the whole 3Doodler team has been eager to get behind. Together with teachers and educators, we're working to make the 3Doodler a standard classroom tool, used for everything from teaching geometry, to making award-winning art, or producing learning aids for the visually impaired.
To support the use of the 3Doodler in education, we have created a special EDU pledge level for only US$1,000 (worth almost US$2,000), that allows you to send a full class set, loaded with x12 3Doodler 2.0 pens, a ton of plastic and accessories, as well as curricular materials to any school, university, library or non-profit makerspace of your choosing. What if "I'm not artistic"?
If you can dream it, you can 3Doodle it! (Or so the saying goes.) The more artistically inclined of you will be sketching castles in the air in no time, but even those of us without that kind of talent can use the 3Doodler to draw on flat surfaces, peel off the Doodled pieces and join them together to make awesome 3D designs and creations. And based on what we've seen so far, previous artistic ability is not a prerequisite for 3Doodling greatness. Even those who considered themselves to be "not artistic" have gone on to Doodle breathtakingly impressive pieces!
There are a ton of places to find 3Doodling inspiration, including our Community Site, which has hundreds of freely downloadable projects and stencils, how-to videos, and images. Our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages are also frequently updated with Doodles of the Week, Community “Doodle-Offs”, and cool creations from around the world.
When will you get your 3Doodler?
We have been working on 3Doodler 2.0 for over 12 months and are inches away from pressing "go" on full production. That means we’ll go straight from this Kickstarter campaign to making your pens. Our first backers will get their new 3Doodlers within a few weeks of this campaign closing, and the majority of you will have your pens by April.
For those of you curious about the exact stage we're at: All R&D and prototypes (along with compliance testing) were completed in December, all components and suppliers have been locked down, we have finished our final pilot runs (those are the pens you see in the video and images), and the assembly process is being fine-tuned so that we can run as smoothly as possible when full production begins! All that's left to do is put the final touches to tooling and place our first large orders with our suppliers. Then we'll be moving like lightening and hassling our shipping partners day and night to get your pens to you ASAP.
We shipped our original Kickstarter 3Doodlers on time and we're determined to do the same, if not better, for 3Doodler 2.0!
No waiting six months (or even a year) for this one… ;)

Risks and challenges
We worked on the original 3Doodler for almost a year before we launched our first Kickstarter. Since then we’ve had two additional years of production experience, our team has also grown, and we’re doing things better than ever.
We’re ready to begin full production on 3Doodler 2.0 as soon as this campaign ends, but as with any physical item there are challenges to getting it right and there is always the possibility of delays (sometimes due to factors outside of anyone's control!). In our efforts to avoid delays and produce the best 3D pen possible, we are selective in how we choose our partners, conservative in setting our timelines, and, as always, we intend to spend a large amount of time in person at the factory.
Fortunately the 3Doodler 2.0 and the JetPack have already been FCC and CE approved (so that's another hurdle out of the way!), and our plastics are amongst the best certified on the planet, having passed full toxicological risk assessments and heavy metal testing.
Quality control remains a major focus for us. We have implemented systems to catch as many product issues as possible before your pens make their way into your hands. If an issue does arise once we have shipped your 3Doodler to you, we have a well-trained and helpful customer service team who will help troubleshoot any problems.

The DoodleStand is the perfect place to store your 3Doodler between creative sessions. Designed to keep your 3Doodler snug as a bug in a rug, the DoodleStand also holds a bunch of plastic strands, ensuring you'll never need to look far for your next color choice.
The Nozzle Set is made up of three main items:
1. the Nozzle Holder, which also doubles as a nozzle removal tool;
2. Six different sizes and shapes of nozzle, including a ribbon tip, square tip, triangle tip, a super fine 0.5mm nozzle, and thicker 1mm and 1.5mm nozzles; and
3. A smoothing tool that clips onto the end of the nozzle, allowing you to smooth over or create contours and details on your Doodles.

Created specifically for more versatile 3Doodling, the pedal connects to the 3Doodler to give you the freedom to Doodle from various angles and for longer periods of time, without holding down the pen’s extrusion buttons.
The cable (1.25m or a little over 4ft long) coming from the Pedal connects to the control port on the 3Doodler.
The JetPack allows you to use 3Doodler 2.0 on the go! It serves as a battery for your 3Doodler, so you are not tied to the wall ;)
The cable connecting the JetPack to the 3Doodler 2.0 is 1.5 meters (5ft) long.
It takes about 3 hours to re-charge the JetPack (using USB 2).
There have been a few requests for add-on accessories to be made available for your pledges. Unfortunately we won’t be able to do this during the Kickstarter campaign. We put the existing bundles together based on consumer preference from the past year (with v.1), and fortunately most of you seem happy them (although we did add the SuperDoodler level after a few days and a lot of requests!).
We completely understand that US$50 and US$85 backers in particular do not want to have to give up their early bird deals to get those bundles. The issue on our side (and this is based on our experience from our first Kickstarter), is that allowing add-ons during the campaign becomes very hard to track and verify, and creating a system for add-ons after the campaign also involves a significant reworking of logistics, which can slow things down (particularly when dealing with thousands of eager backers). There are risks to this, for example US$50 backers would not get their pens in time if they include add-ons, and US$85 backers may find their pledges delayed as a result of a small portion of that pledge group wanting to add items. We really want to avoid any delays and get you your 3Doodler 2.0 as soon as we humanly can. To make matters even more complicated, adding accessories would result in much higher shipping fees (due to the box sizes and weights), which we would have to calculate and apply separately for every country (and for every combo of add-ons).
All of that said, we are looking at what we can offer all our backers, but especially those who have early bird deals, once the campaign ends so that you can purchase accessories separately and not be hit too hard by shipping fees or a delay in getting your 3Doodler 2.0.
The Pedal will work with both the original and the 3Doodler 2.0
The 3Doodler 2.0 is NOT compatible with the old Nozzle Set or DoodleStand.
If you want a Nozzle Set or DoodleStand for your 3Doodler 2.0 please back one of the pledge levels that includes those accessories.
The smoothing tool is a small leaf shaped piece of metal that clips onto the end of the nozzle, allowing you to smooth over or create contours and details on your Doodles. Once your pen (and the smoother) have warmed up, it can be used to manipulate the shape of your existing doodles.
The JetPack will only work with 3Doodler 2.0. The original 3Doodler is not compatible with the JetPack.
Yes, you can use it anywhere (that has electricity). We’ll be sending out a survey at the end of the campaign, where you’ll be asked to choose the socket type that suits your country’s electrical grid.
And if you are going somewhere remote with your 3Doodler that may not have electricity, don’t forget to take your JetPack!
Voltage specs: 110-240V
The best way to do this would be to mount it to the arm (using tape, for example), and use the 3Doodler’s control port to control the extrusion.
Yes of course! A bunch of us are lefties, including one of the inventors!
The 3Doodler can only be used with 3mm DoodleStrands. Using spools is not recommended, as it puts stress on some of the (very small) internal components of the pen, and will void your warranty.
In theory yes, but we’ve tested a number of conductive materials and to be honest, we weren’t blown away. For better results and true conductivity, we prefer using regular ABS or PLA with a coating of conductive paint (we really like Bare Conductive).
You can’t make edible Doodles quite yet. We’re experimenting with a bunch of new materials, so stay tuned!
We know that there are a number of original 3Doodler backers who do home-schooling and may work with larger home-school organizations; if the EDU Bundle is of interest to you, please reach out to us at education@the3Doodler.com.
EDU BUNDLE: I want to back an EDU Bundle but don’t have an educational institution in mind. Please help!
If you are interested in backing 3Doodler at this level, but don’t know of a school or other educational institution where you’d like to have it sent, we’d be happy to suggest one. Alternatively, with your consent, we are happy to send the bundle to a school of our choosing and arrange for you to receive an update from that school once they receive their EDU Bundle.
A quick note about tax deductibility: if you yourself are not a teacher, the way it works is that you will be backing the 3Doodler EDU Bundle and then donating it to an educational institution of your choice. For tax purposes, you will need to obtain a tax receipt from the educational institution to which you have donated the EDU Bundle, not from us. The tax deduction will generally be for the value of the donation made (i.e. the value of the pledge level as shown on your Kickstart confirmation and receipt, including shipping). Neither we nor Kickstarter can provide tax receipts.
Unlike a 3D printer, you aren’t constrained by software knowledge or expensive hardware.
You can use the 3Doodler to repair objects, touch up or personalise 3D prints, or create free hand masterpieces!

Doodles made with PLA plastic will biodegrade over time, and can be composted.
ABS Doodles can be recycled like other household plastic products, where facilities are available.

You cannot re-use extruded filament it inside the 3Doodler, but you can use your scraps to make new sculptures or art!
Unused portions of DoodleStrands can be re-used, provided you snip the used end(s) before inserting it into your 3Doodler.
Yes, we have patents that have been granted as well as pending patents in several countries. These cover various aspects of the technology that makes up the 3Doodler.
There are 25 strands of plastic in each pack, 5 strands each of 5 colours.
Our understanding is that if it does indeed shrink after extrusion, it is very marginal and will not be the kind of shrinkage that would impact the aesthetic qualities of your Doodle.
The flexibility and strength of your Doodle is really up to you as the creator. You can make pieces thicker by Doodling slowly, and by going back and forth over your line, thereby bonding layers of plastic on top of each other.
In the converse, you'll create more flexible (and fragile) Doodles if you move the pen (or your hand) faster. Faster movements are also great for getting whispy Doodled effects, for example grass, a spider-web or a delicate top-layer.
Your choice of plastic also has some impact here, with PLA being easier to snap and ABS being quite resilient to bending.
Yes you can. And you can do so almost immediately as the “ink” cools very soon after leaving the pen. As long as it is a paint that is safe for use with plastic, it can help beautify your doodles.

PLEDGE LEVELS: Which plastics (or what colors) come with my pledge level? / Can I choose which plastics I get?
Each pledge level, except for the Family Pack, Edu Bundle and the DOUBLE pledges, will come with 4 packs of plastic, each containing 25 ten inch strands.
You will get 2 packs of ABS plastic, which will include 5 strands each of the following colours: white, light blue, purple, brown, silver, neon yellow, pink, orange and green, and glow in the dark. And, you'll get 2 packs of PLA plastic, which will include 5 strands each of the following colours: black, red, yellow, green and dark blue, + 5 mystery colours!
The way Kickstarter works, you can only back one of the available pledge levels. Each pledge level is also limited to one pledge per backer. However if you are looking to get multiple 3Doodlers, we have created special DOUBLE pledge levels for the 3Doodler 2.0, Accessorize, JetSetter and PowerDoodler rewards, as well as a special FAMILY PACK with four pens and a bunch of accessories + plastic strands (for those wanting to Doodle battle one another).
Please DO NOT multiply or add excess funds to your pledge in the hope that we will send you more than one set of pledge rewards. Additional funds will not equal additional pens (or accessories/plastics).. So if you have pledged extra funds in the hope of receiving additional 3Doodlers, please withdraw those funds before the Kickstarter closes.
The 3Doodler is not a toy for children (it's recommended for ages 14+).
While the plastic extruded from 3Doodler is safe to touch within seconds of leaving the pen, the pen itself has a metal nozzle that can get as hot as 240°C/464°F, which does constitute a burn hazard. It is important that users do not touch the nozzle, the parts near the nozzles, or any melted plastic, or they may be burned.
Users should review the safety tips and warnings contained in the User Manual that accompanies the 3Doodler prior to Doodling.
You can touch your Doodle as you go, but do it carefully. It may still be warm to the touch (but cools very quickly).
NO, please don’t do that, you’ll burn yourself!
We will send tracking information to the email address you provide in the survey once your 3Doodler has shipped. Please ensure you provide a valid email address that you check regularly.
We plan on using DHL to ship your rewards to you!
We ship to (almost) everywhere in the world; we ship anywhere a US company is legally allowed to ship to!
The shipping service used will depend on the destination country. In general, we will rely on tracked postal service.
We’ll be sending out a survey 2 weeks before we are ready to ship your reward, so you’ll be able to provide your most up-to-date address! Please make sure to provide an address you’ll have access to for at least 6 weeks after the survey. Or, set up mail forwarding with your local postal service.
That depends on where you live! In most cases, shipping should take around 5 business days. However, in some cases, shipping by post can take up to 3 weeks to places like South America or the Middle East.
We’ll be using reputable, efficient postal and courier services, but parcels do get lost now and then; to err is human! If it turns out to be lost to the ether, we’ll of course send you a new one. If you suspect your parcel may be lost, please get in touch with us by July 1 2015 at the latest so we can launch an investigation.
Sorry, that is not possible, it would entail a logistical nightmare. We’ve chosen the quickest and most reliable methods available to us.
You may be charged duties and/or taxes upon receipt of your parcel. We cannot control foreign governments' decisions to apply tariffs, duties or taxes (including VAT) on imported products.
SHIPPING: What if I don’t pick up my parcel and it gets sent back to you / destroyed? Or if I provided the wrong address?
Pay careful attention to your inbox as we’ll be sending you tracking information approximately 2 weeks after the survey closes. If you DO NOT pick up your parcel, it will either be returned to us, or destroyed. If this is the case, please contact us immediately. We will send it back to you (a delivery fee may be applied). Please contact us by July 1 2015 at the latest. If you contact us after this date, we cannot guarantee resolution, and will review issues on a case by case basis.
The 3Doodler 2.0 takes around 1 minute to reach LOW temp, and another 20-30 seconds to reach HIGH temperature.
We’ve carried out controlled tests so that we can give you a comprehensive answer to this question. Keep in mind that temperature values may change +/- 10 degrees and will also depend on ambient temperatures and ventilation.
When Doodling with ABS plastic:
At the point of extrusion: ~80-90 °C
Two seconds after extrusion: ~50 °C
Five seconds after extrusion: ~40 °C to room temp
When Doodling with PLA plastic:
When measuring the plastic at the point of extrusion: ~70-75°C
Two seconds after extrusion: ~60 °C (it retains heat better than ABS)
Five seconds after extrusion: ~50-55 °C
Approximately 230 °C max for ABS, and 190 °C max for PLA.
We measured the temperature at the nozzle, around the rubber area next to the nozzle, and around the metal shaft between the rubber area and the 3Doodler’s buttons. Approximate temperatures are as follows:
At the nozzle tip:
~120 °C on the HIGH temperature setting
~ 115 °C on the LOW temperature setting
Around the rubber area:
~82 °C on the HIGH temperature setting
~70 °C on the LOW temperature setting
The metal shaft area between the buttons and the rubber area:
~45 °C on the HIGH temperature setting
~40 °C on the LOW temperature setting
The main parts of the aluminium casing stayed at room temp at all times.
Noise comparisons are a hard thing to get right, mainly due to the combination of pitch, tone and the nature of the sound produced (not to mention the distance of the sound, as well as ambient noise). So we asked our team to compare the noise of the 3Doodler to regular household items or daily noises we have all experienced. Here’s some of the feedback we were given:
“Kind of like the whirr of a laser printer”
“A little quieter than my electric toothbrush when on but not brushing my teeth”
“Much quieter than a hair dryer”
“So much quieter than v.1” (not useful but we couldn’t resist adding this one)
“Mini hot air blowers, like the ones used to harden putty or resins”
“A tad higher pitched than my cat when it purrs” (yes, people measure that!)
We are aiming for a range of 15 to 18 millimeters per second.
The minimum length of a Strand that can safely be inserted, then extruded, is around 1 inch (2.5 cm).
Yes you can! You can reverse out the unused portion of the DoodleStrand, and insert a different colored DoodleStrand in its stead.

Yes! You have two options, Fast or Slow.
No, you can use a portion of it. You can either cut it up ahead of time, or reverse it out of the pen, snip the ends, and use it again later. Be aware that there is a point past which the strand can no longer reverse out of the pen. In those cases, you’ll need to use the remainder of the strand.
On the standard nozzle, 1 strand should provide 100 inches (2.5m) of doodles. Check our Facebook page for examples, there's a 1 strand contest going on!
All our plastics bond well to other plastics with enough pressure, and particularly well to plastics of the same type. This is why ABS is used often to repair household plastic items (usually also made of ABS). There is some skill to ensuring a tighter bond, for example applying pressure, and holding the tip of the 3Doodler close to the existing plastic so that it melts a bit, which aids the bonding.
PLA does hold to glass and ceramics (and less so metals), but it is not a firm hold, and can be peeled off easily (the side that was connected to the glass will have a super shiny finish). The hold is however firm enough to adorn drinking glasses, Doodle on windows, and much much more.
All plastics bond well to wood, provided there is some roughness in the texture/grain of the wood (sand your wood to increase the roughness).
A lack of bonding doesn’t mean your foray into mixed media stops here. Because the plastic bonds well with itself you can encase items such as magnets or jewels; you can also paint your doodles, or create hinges, loops and hooks to help connect your Doodles with other mediums.
Why yes you can! That’s why we created the Nozzle Set. Provided you follow our instructions and use it as prescribed in the user manual, no maintenance is required. In the event of blockages or any other easy-to-remedy issues, we have videos and tutorials to help guide you through any maintenance that may be needed.
