Giant Boxes of Stuff: Production Update 10

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

Hello residents of Gloomhaven!

Wow, it feels like it has been ages since the last update. I guess the whole world feels completely different now that I have a real-live box of Gloomhaven in my home.

There was pre-Gloomhaven, and post-Gloomhaven, and I am now living in a post-Gloomhaven existence. I'm sorry that the rest of you won't get to experience the epochal shift until January.

But other than that, what's the news? Well, I made an unboxing video to show you all the stuff in the box.

Sorry that my recording equipment isn't the best, but I think it does a good job of giving you the full scope of the box contents.

There was also a lovely video with much higher production quality done by Man vs. Meeple. I got to hang out with Jeremy and David on Saturday to talk Gloomhaven, and it turned out pretty well!

As for specific production updates, we are reprinting the character tuck boxes to decrease their width. I received some samples of these earlier in the week, and I think the new size is great. They take up less space in the box, which is definitely useful, and all the components inside the tuck box fit more snugly, which helps keep the box from getting crushed for whatever reason.

We also spent a lot of time coming up with the best possible solution to the HP and XP tracker problem, given our limitations with the manufacturing equipment and what was already printed on the boards. We end up shrinking the width a bit and cutting teeth into the sides of the track, which help significantly in keeping the trackers in place.

It's not a perfect solution, but it's the best we can do at this point, and I think it works pretty well.

We're also working on the insert. I received some images of the first iteration last night, and it, well, needed a lot of work. We'll put the work in, though, and hopefully I can have a lot more to tell you about it in the next update.

Paul Grogan also assures me that he'll have the instructional videos ready by the time the game arrives to Kickstarter backers, but it looks to me like he's spending more time just playing the copy of the game I gave him to shoot the video with. I guess he's just enjoying living in a post-Gloomhaven world, too, which I can't fault him for.

The other big news is that I will be at BGG Con in two weeks, and I am looking forward to hanging out with all the cool people there, including any of you who will be coming. I'll also be bringing the giant Gloomhaven box with me, so if you wanted to play the game and take in its full majesty, send me a Kickstarter message. I'll be scheduling a handful of demo events throughout the convention, probably hosted at the Bob's Weekend Wonders booth (#828 at the back of the Aviators Hall). Even when I won't be running demos, you'll still be able to find the game box at Bob's booth, so you can go by and ogle it any time.

Lastly, I just want to assure everyone that you will be getting your copies before Gloomhaven hits retail. I've gotten a few emails from people concerned that various retailers were listing the release date as December. This is because I sent out the sell sheet before we hit the latest delays. I've since updated the retail release to February, but some retailers are slow to make the update on their end.

Okay, cool. Lots of exciting stuff. I hope you are all looking forward to living your life post-Gloomhaven, and I'll see you at BGG Con!

The Man vs Meeple video is just awesome. It really looks like both reviewers would have liked to keep the box and start a campaign the instance the video ended. Brilliant.

    2. Cuddly Tiger

That's a big box with a lot of amazing looking stuff in it...

    3. Brad Vomocil

Great videos thanks for posting! So excited for this to come!

    4. Paul Grogan on

I'd also like to raise a complaint about that Paul Grogan guy. He keeps posting of facebook and twitter about him playing the game and saying how amazing it is. I also think he is forgetting his responsibilities in filming the rules video and too busy enjoying himself. It's not cricket by jove!

The box content is amazing !!! So much stuff !! I forgot some of the stuff that was in the game and the unboximg really help to jolt my memory . Seeing the finish product is super sweet as there was some stuff I didn't realise we were getting like the acheivment stickers and 17 characters ??? I can imagine playing this for the next few years

Ok so apparently I cannot post links in the comments field to show you. :(

This is a suggestion for the health track sliders. Everyone here has probably played Betrayal at House on the Hill. The sliders for that game are TERRIBLE. So in looking forban alternative, I came across these. I bought them and they are FANTASTIC! Would it be possible to have something like this made for Gloomhaven? Perhaps square opening insteard of circular. They dont scratch the card, they are easy to remove, and they dont slip and slide everywhere. It just seems a nice easy workable fix.

The tracker-solution looks nice, is there any way you could show us a picture of the actual trackers being used within the new slot design? I just hope that the elusive inlay won't delay the delivery date in January...

I've seen the copy in Essen, it really drops your yaw. Looks amazing with all the little boxes and so many other components, I can't wait to dive in!

      Isaac.. out of curiosity:
once the tiles, the overlay tiles, the multiple tokens.... have being pouch out, do they have a place to keep them in the insert? are they all together in one place? or are they somehow organized in the insert to help setup/brake down time?

      thanks :)

man, im soooo excited about this game. And I have a GREAT line of KS coming my way: TMB, DS - super DS fan and all, being the one closer to this, but THIS THIS... well this is LOVE.

    11. RavenMad on

Hey Isaac, any chance of seeing how the health/xp tokens fit in the new slots?

Great update and soooo looking forward to getting this. Reckon my group are going to love it!

For the standee version, the character standees will be placed inside the character tuck boxes - no spoilers!

I can't believe what backers are getting for their money!!!

    15. Bryan on

For those of us that bought the version without miniatures, and just the standees... Will the standees for the player characters be in the character boxes? Or will we be getting a box full of spoilers?

    16. chang on

I love the face of the guys at man vs meeple LOL LOL especially when they realized that each character is individually made (its own cards, and such..) the guy on the grey shirt look at the othe rone with this dude! expression face lol

    17. chang on

@Anthony I think this box redefine the meaning of EPIC
@alex yup, agree with the ziplocks ... beside rubber bands always brake for some bloody reason inside the box when no one is looking. I tried all brands and then the wonderful world of small baggies appear lol

Rubber bands !? I've had terrible experience with those damaging cards. Small ziplocks are a lot better.

    19. Weresheep of Sin AKA Stefan

The more I see ... the harder it gets to wait. Seems like you have an elegant solution for everything and it was obvious how impressed the guys from Man vs Meeple were.

Outstanding artwork and gameplay sounds brilliant.

9,5 kg? I'm not sure what to say. :-D

    21. Anthony B

'Epic' is the only word I can think of that describes that box.

    22. James Ducas on

Thanks for the consistent updates over the life of this project. It's very much appreciated! Know that all your hard work (which is apparent with every update) does not go unnoticed.

    23. Martin Looij

      Holy.... 9,5 kilo's...Dude!

    24. PAUL on

Would this box be considered a studio, or a 1-bedroom? Either way, me and the cats are moving in. :)

    25. Jedra7609

Oh wow! There's a lot of stuff in that box!

I am sure that Mr Grogan will deliver, he can't have his feet up smoking cigars and drinking martinis forever. Surely?

    26. Sulucion

Holy Hell that's a Big Box! - i had no idea

    27. Eamon Burke on

This is really exciting! I think I wanna find a way to mount the map to the wall of my office.

    28. Murteas on

I like the "teeth" on the sliders for the health tracker. Good solution. I'm sure it will be great. I'm really looking forward to the game. I hope this becomes an amazing success for you as well! Thanks for the update!
