A New Era: Production Update 1

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

Hello residents of Gloomhaven!

When I first started writing weekly updates after the end of the Kickstarter, I certainly did not anticipate writing 37 of them. If you look at the project page, I was pretty confident we were going to get all the pre-production stuff done by January.

Turns out I was about 5 months off, which is an uncomfortable amount of months. I don't like being wrong on such a massive scale, and I apologize for that.

The good news is, though, that the game really did become as wonderful as I had envisioned, and the production process is now underway, just 5 months late. For those of you doing the math at home, since the initial projection was May, that now puts us at a projection of October (or maybe late September). Now that things are out of my unpredictable hands, this projection should be far more accurate.

So, what has been going on these last two weeks? Well, the factory has now been over all the files. There were a lot, and they had a lot of questions, and there was a long process of clarifying things and fixing things that weren't right and uploading updated files.

I think we are now at a point where all questions have been settled, so we will move forward with making a new white box sample and also proof sheets of all the printed materials. Proof sheets are large physical sheets of all the cards and mats and books in the game. Once they send those over, Josh and I will spend some time poring over them looking for errors. And once we approve everything, the actual printing will begin.

So in two weeks, I should have pictures to share of that stuff, but for now, that's all the news I have. Well, that and I have started working on the skeleton-slaying video. There are about 3000 names to get through, so it may be another month before I finish things up with that.

Until next time!

I concur with Thomas. The fact that your are apologizing for a game that is set to probably deliver in 2-3 months from now is silly. I'm so excited for this game. W00t!

I think of all the kickstarter experiences I've had, this ranks right up there at the top - no question about it, the communication made all the difference for me, Isaac.

It became a weekly episode I found myself looking forward to reading through and looking at the new art section, the development news, and what you'd been up to just in general. Watching our baby grow and get such care and attention from you and your team has made backing this project a most memorable experience.

..and still, the best part - the game itself - is yet to come! How cool is that?

@isaac i REALLY REALLY hope u r thinking about the expansion for this. i know i havent play it yet, but with all tge updates and material provided i can tell it would be awesome. You sir have run one (if not THE) of the best KS i being part of.
      thanks and good luck :)

I will steal Thomas' perfect comment...
I will repeat what everyone else has said: I didn't notice it was late because of the great communication

    5. Dharmatrails

I am writing what everyone else has. Make the game grand and epic and beautiful. we will wait longer for a perfect product than a rushed, shoddy one 'on time'. Carry on. Take your time. You have been honest and forthright in every stage of this Kickstarter project. I can wait, and I can't wait, to see the finished game!!!

Same here, as long as there's regular updates, I often don't even look at the original date. It's more of a problem when you realize "wait a second, what happened to that KS project... it's strangely quiet... and long overdue".

Besides, the one thing where nobody cares whether you got it right or wrong after release is the date.

Hi isaac, you have nothing to apologise for but it's appreciated nonetheless. To my mind Gloomhaven is a landmark game deserving of "exactly the right amount" of development and pre-production time. If that takes an extra 5 months then so be it, it would have been a crime of what-could-have-been otherwise. Your backers have, literally, got your back on this so keep weaving your magic with the same passion, integrity and commitment as always and we'll be happy and content. Looking forward to seeing the next set of production proofs and samples!

I'm still *really* curious about the storage solution.. we've still not been able to think of anything that puts 20 token sheets inside the box and still keeps everything in place later.

Good work! Moar item art please... the item art is the best ever.

All backers ask for is good communication and a good product in the end. So far the first has been excellent so most of us haven't cared about how late it is so long as the product is actually as good as we all hope, yourself included!

Woot! Soooooo excited!! To be honest, I wish Kickstarter had an option to "blur" out the delivery date so it doesn't even exist. I back projects I'm excited about not release dates :-)

5 months is not much on KS ... 5 months with regular updates is nothing. Looking forward to October!

      What? 5 months late??

I had to double check to confirm and... Yup. You are 5 months late. I want a refund... JOKE! I DON'T want a refund. (Just making sure it's clear).

Honestly, I can only support what had been said so far. Communication was and still is beyond expectations. So good I did not realize how late this project was because the amount of work that was needed to be done was so clearly communicated.

So, don't worry. This game will become a great Xmas present from your team!

      Keep it up! :D

    15. Jonas Vanschooren

I can only confirm what has been said before, you did a great job. And the sublime communication made sure we where al informed every step of the way.
I really love how you did this Kickstarter campaign and can only wish more campaigns where done this good.

      Great great job.

Hey, your communication has been on point! No complaints from me. Delays with reason are acceptable, especially when those delays are improving what is becoming my most anticipated board game ever. Keep on keeping on Isaac!!

Well, communication has been great since the campaign ended and you never gave me any doubts that you were working very hard. Speaking for myself, and hopefully others, I want to see this project realized and we're in this together. Best of luck in wrapping this all up.

    19. Greg Smith on

I assume at least six months of delay for every new Kickstarter, so by my watch you're ahead of schedule! Cheers for all the communication.

Great stuff! Thanks for the update - much appreciated.
