Scenarios and Yet More Rules: Post-Kickstarter week 28

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

Hello beautiful residents of Gloomhaven!

Is it Friday already? My dog and I just sit at home all day, every day, so sometimes we lose track. Well, let's be honest - my dog never knows what day it is.

But anyway, I'm pretty sure it's Friday, so it's time to update you on the week's progress!

First of all, thanks so much for all your comments on the ability cards. There were actually fewer edits than I was expecting, so that's good. And it is certainly not too late to send me more feedback on them. If you happened to miss last week's update, you can find the starting class cards here and the (SPOILERS) advanced class cards here. And this is a really good place to post feedback.

In addition, we are also welcoming more feedback on the rule book. Josh whipped up a new version for us and it awaits your critical gaze here.

As for me, I am still roughly on schedule with my timeline, which makes me happy. I finished the monster stat cards over the weekend and am now knee-deep in the scenario book, which I have made significant progress on over the last few days.

I've laid out about 15 scenarios in the last week and have another 45 to go, so it looks like I'm still on track to get a rough version of it finished in three weeks. I'd like it to go faster, but almost all of the story text for these scenarios needs to be written as well.

We'll see. Maybe I'll be able to finish in two weeks.

All right, so that's all the update I have for you, but I did want to mention two more things real quick.

First of all, Richard Ham of Rahdo Runs Through is doing his yearly Kickstarter to fund the existence of his vital Youtube channel. He is a shining star in the board game community, and, quite frankly, Gloomhaven would not exist without him. His exuberant run-through of my first game was so mind-blowingly positive, it gave me the confidence to pursue this whole board game publishing thing full-time. And thus, Gloomhaven was born.

So go throw him a few bucks if you find his videos at all helpful.

And secondly, I just wanted to give a shout-out to my boys at the Brawling Brothers Board Gaming Podcast on their one-year anniversary. They now have a full year's worth of ridiculous, highly entertaining podcast episodes to listen to, so congrats on that!

Okay, now I'm done for real. I hope all you U.S. backers remembered to file your taxes!

Until next time!

This one is about the cards from last week but I figured you're more likely to read it here... the formatting is inconsistent on card 119 from card 126 - the way that augments are coloured on the MT. I prefer the style used on 119 with the different colour backing the augment, as it helps to understand the card more quickly.
The same applies to the SS, since his/her songs would also benefit from the shaded background like in card 119.
      Hope that helps!

Also I noticed a round tracker listed in the components but not referenced anywhere in the rule book.

Hello, I was wondering if using gold/yellow stands for the elites would be a better option. It would then align with the monster placement legend in the scenario setup. Black for none, Clear/white for normal and yellow/gold for Elites.

We decided to go with only one version of the rule book, since the mention of minis in the game components section is the only difference and it would cost significantly more to make two versions of the rules. So the standee version will have a mention of minis. I hope that doesn't ruin your day.

Minor question. The rulebook lists character miniatures, and I assume will list standees for people who chose the standee option. Which version will people who chose standee with miniature add on get?

So... are the maptiles/mapdiagrammes in the rulebook/scenariobook final? The lack of endcaps and quite a few loose connectors in all the mapdiagrammes have me a bit worried that these things could sort of break the immersion and atmosphere of this game a little bit, while being quite easily avoidable.

Apart from that, I feel like this game is progressing really well; keep up the good work!

Thanks for the brawling brothers recommendation... Listened to a bunch of their podcasts today while working. Hearing your interview there reminded me how much DnD experience you have and renewed my excitement for the scenarios. Josh and Brandon are great, I kept picturing the guys from the Sonic commercials when listening to them and it made me laugh.

As always, take your time. The scenario text shouldn't be 3 am ramblings of a madman (well madder than normal). Thanks Isaac!

That rule book is looking really good. I've been enjoying reading through it this weekend. Certainly wets the appetite. Keep up the great work!

      Can't wait!

"There were actually fewer edits than I was expecting, so that's good." Well, you know how they say never count your chickens before they hatch? Haha... I was hoping to get my corrections out to you today, but there are just so many cards that when one thing pops up, I sometimes have to run back through them all just to check on something or correct them all, you know? As I said before, it's quite maddening! But long story short, I'll be sending you an email sometime this weekend, because I think 15 or so pages may be a bit much for the above linked BGG thread, haha... On the plus side, though, at least it's not 30!

And… take your time, make some breaks. Don’t push yourself too hard!
We can wait, the more relaxed you are the better the game will be and the less burned out you will be!

While Rahdo also convinced me to back rather bad games (I am looking at you, Posthuman) he is certainly a great reviewer despite that I don’t share his preference for non-interaction and eurogames.

I really hope he is spot on with Santorini (right now on KS) and I can see why he encourages you. He can really praise games he likes :).
