A Bit of Delay: Post-Kickstarter week 22

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

How's it going, residents of Gloomhaven?

Rule book

All right, so first of all, I have a new rule book for you. We're just going to avoid the whole Dropbox debacle that happened last week and go directly to Google Drive. You can find it here!

Now, like the scenario book, not all suggestions were incorporated, though I greatly appreciate everyone who took the time to look it over. Also, if you made suggestions within the last day or so, they may not be incorporated yet. And there was some stuff I noticed that we haven't fixed yet either.

Basically, I'm saying this is still a work in progress. We'll probably have a new version for you next week, too.

I have the surveys all written up, but they haven't been sent out yet. I'm still waiting on one last element, then you'll get them. They'll get sent out over the weekend, or Monday at the latest.

Now then, as I enter the third week of getting this 100+ page scenario book laid out and looking pretty, and lots of other stuff is starting to build up on the sidelines, I guess it's time to embrace the reality of the situation I've created for myself.

We're looking at more delays.

The bottom line is that there is a significant amount of work left to do, and the last thing I want is to rush this project out the door. Most of the work, outside of the scenario book, is what I would consider little stuff, but when you're talking about a game with 13 pounds' worth of components, the little stuff can add up quickly. And when you're goal is to deliver a truly fantastic game to your backers, sometimes it's the little stuff that is the most important.

If one screw is loose on that space shuttle, you could end up with the world's most expensive firework, and that's not good at all.

Plus, I think my manufacturer is starting to get a grasp of just how massive this project is as well, and even if things go perfectly on his end, he seems apprehensive of being able to deliver the games by July. With all of these components and sealed envelope construction, we're probably going to need a lot of back-and-forth to make sure everything is perfect. We still haven't worked out an official timeline, but I'm starting to see the writing on the wall regardless.

So what does this mean exactly? Well, we still need to wait and see at this point, but I just thought it fair to warn you that a July delivery at this point is looking less likely, and it's possible things may get pushed back until September. Stay tuned, and I'll let you know more details when I know them.

Sorry to end on that sad news, but that's all I have for this week. Have a good night! Until next time!

The reward survey just sent out is very bad!
If you are even the least bit unsure about how to fill it out, please hold off from doing so until Isaac has clarified it.

The following questions can be interpreted in so many ways!
Would you like to increase your pledge above $64 to receive additional rewards? (If no, feel free to fill in the remainder of the questions "NA.")
Cool, so how many boxes of minis would you like to order? ($20 each)
How many standee versions of the game would you like to order? ($64 each)
How many mini versions of the game would you like to order, INCLUDING the one you pledged for? ($79 each)
What is your country code? (Shipping for each set of 1-5 game boxes is: free for US, Canada and China; $10 for Western Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia; $20 for Eastern Europe; and $50 for everywhere else.)
How much money did you send to through Paypal (with "GLOOMHAVEN ADD-ONS" in the special instructions)? Your answer should be the total of the previous four questions, minus what you've already pledged.

Do you mean the difference in my pledge level from the money I've actually pledged? Do you mean if I want to add things in addition to that? You didn't even ask what my pledged money was supposed to be for anywhere else. Country codes and then you list a bunch of shipping costs? Do you want a cost or a country code? Also why didn't you take this data from the KS? It should be available. Asking 5000 people to: "Your answer should be the total of the previous four questions, minus what you've already pledged." is a REALLY bad idea.

Please clarify this in a super clear update and you'll save yourself sooo many hours.

I'd rather have it good instead of fast.

Take your time. I know some folks are going to lose their minds over waiting, but it was pretty clear to me that this was going to take way longer than your schedule anticipated.

      Just make sure it's good!

    4. David Moffett on

Oh, almost forgot. New rulebook? Much, much better.

Whenever a designer delays a game and apologizes, I am reminded of a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto. It is about video games, but it applies to tabletop games just as well, especially one as ambitious in scope as Gloomhaven.

“A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”

      ― Shigeru Miyamoto

    6. Ryan Michael on

Take your time Issac! I'll have more time to play the game in the colder months anyways! Looking forward to an incredible game.

I definitely prefer that you take the time to playtest, figure out all the little details, and make the whole game perfect. I'm really looking forward to the final product!

Just look at all those positive comments on this update, so don't feel bad about the delay and keep up the good work! It will be worth it!
I can only chime in and say that it is the right decision and I fully support you. Especially since you are as open an communicative about it!
Your handling of this kickstarter is just superb!

    11. Simon Cooper

You may think that being late with a product that someone has backed would make them angry, well maybe. BUT releasing a product on time that sucked would guarentee to make a backer angry ! SO take your time and do it right.

Given the choice I would rather have a great product than an adequate one !

    12. Weresheep of Sin AKA Stefan

Quality is more important to me than getting it on time. A couple of months delay is nothing considering how successful this was (meaning how much stuff was added).

    13. Dennis Pousette on

As long as we backers are in the loop and you continue with the weekly updates I don't mind waiting 2-10 months extra if it means the game will be more polished :)

      Take your time Isaak!

      Cheers from Sweden

Ohh I can smell the fire and hear the screech of pitchforks already lol I am very very anxious to play this, but truth is it is massive so it takes time.good luck once again

I don't mind at all that this will take longer than expected. The longer it takes the better the content. I'm bummed for you, though, that you likely won't be able to sell it at Gen Con.

    16. Craig Robertson

Ditto to many other comments. i'm willing to wait for a good product

May as well reiterate what everyone else is saying - Take your time and make it awesome.

Keep up the great communication Isaac, it is much appreciated and helps everyone to understand how different issues affect the timeline.

    24. Victor Bocaling on

As they say "Do it right the first time!" Would rather wait for a great product than get a product that needs to be fixed over a span of time.

@Chantal is right in adding some buffer time to your estimates. Not that it's a reflection on your efforts, Isaac. Just to make allowance for Mr. Murphy's involvement. Keep up the great work!

    25. Bård H Andreassen

Take the time you need to make this game as you intended, I'll gladly wait.

Because as you said, it's often all the little things that make a big deal in the end.

    26. Chantal Noordeloos

A humble hint on a new ETA: when you finally have an idea what it is: add 2 months to it. I rather expect a game in November and getting it in September, than expecting September and getting October. When the date is changed too much, it can get frustrating.

That said: take your time. It's better to have a good game and wait for it ;)

    27. Tim

No problem on the delay, would rather have it done right.

Might be a bit late with the rule book edit suggestions but I have two. 1) The Push/Pull symbols seem like they could be easily confused for each other if there isn't text accompanying it. 2) My default way of thinking for a POISON effect would be loss of health each round. The poison draining life each round. A WOUND effect would be +1 damage due to a hurt (arm, leg, eye) not functioning optimally causing openings in defense or vision. Conversely I can envision the opposite cases where POISON could effect there vision or slow reaction time opening them up for additional damage or a WOUND bleeding causing loss of health each round. Once again the first is just my default way of thinking and is just a light suggestion.

    28. Nakano

      Page 13:
      * Why there is two variations of thickness in monsters? Thicker is for bosses?
      * For some reason, I feel black would be the most fitting color for elite and white to indicate (empty) No Monster. Might be risky to change those now, though.

    29. Baginses

      Yellow makes me sad,
I want the game so bad,
But you're up front so i'm not mad

As some others have mentioned, because some of my other big projects have been delayed to summer this isn't actually bad news for me :p

I have no problem waiting as long as you keep us updated, as you have been. Your weekly posts have earned you a lot of bonus points in my book.

    32. rashktah

I said it before and I'm sayin' it again: the game won't be out before 2017. And if the quality will be great, I'm all in for it.

    33. Nakano

Great decision to take extra time for writing and overall polishing instead of rushing the project out of door. The end result and communication matters, not delivery date as much.

    34. Ukko Kaarto on

I love dropbox :( I use it for school/work etc. Sad that this was a debate :/ For me, I think taking your time to find a solution for the box is ok! Better have quality than a rush project -,^ keep the good work!

I look forward to every Saturday here in Australia. It is the day I get a Gloomhaven update. I don't even care that much about what's in the update. I just love looking behind the scenes. Plus it helps knowing what is happening with the game, unlike with some other KS. No updates for months on end

    37. J. Gillespie on

It's a complex game with a ton of content, I'm glad to hear nothing is being rushed or overlooked. The extra polish will be well worth the wait.

I'm fine with the delays. It's always hard to say how things will work out once the balls starts rolling on a project. Like others have said, I appreciate the updates and openness and that you're making this awesome game. I can't wait to play it.
Also my birthday is in December, so if it gets delayed until then it'll save me from buying a gift for myself.

Agreed, take your time. Pretty much never believed you'd get it out by the deadline you posted!

Looking at the rulebook, it is really impressive. Tidy and clear. Cannot wait until the game comes out. I love the level of depth in the rules, it looks like an RPG. Especially love the 'elemental' thing you have done, it is original yet a nice way of allowing fun combos.

    44. Sal U on

I'm very okay with some delays. With a project like this quality comes first. I got plenty of faith in your vision and I am more then happy to wait to see it properly realized!

    45. RavenMad on

No problem here with a delay - always put quality over speed! (besides, it will give me a chance to get some of my shame games to the table :)
Looking real good, Isaac and really appreciate the regular updates and the honesty - I think the transparency is why everyone is cool with news about delays. Being informed about what's going on makes a tremendous difference. Cheers!

    46. Pasquale Cirone on

I think you're doing a good job considering the scope of the project. I can appreciate getting a spectacular game several months late than getting a poorly produced, unplayable game tomorrow.

    48. ionas on

Would be cool if it hits my table end of this year btw... quite a lot time left. Even december is no problem.

I hope you can fix the issue of the game being re-playable and maybe add some mode where you are not playing coop entirely (to cancel out alpha gaming).

All the best and thanks for doing this.

    49. chang on

ps thanks for jumping dropbox on this one :)

    50. ionas on

Add some light shadow (vertically and horizontally centred, with a lot of blur and some transparency) behind the black text on non-white/light-grey background. That way the rulebook will actually be a joy to READ.
