The Battle Continues: Post-Kickstarter week 3

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

Hello glorious residents of Gloomhaven!

Three weeks past the end of the project and it's time for another update!

Graphic design

Josh will take center stage again because he's got the cool images. He's been busy on a number of things this week, but what I wanted to show you were some of the stickers he's been working on for the map board. Last week I showed you the board itself, so now here are some zoomed-in locations:

And those same locations with scenario stickers:

We're interested in feedback on these, so let us know what you think!

It's been a bit of a slow week for me dealing with some more administrative stuff. I honestly didn't get as much done as I'd hoped, but I'm sure my pace will pick up soon.

I did develop the rest of the monsters added through stretch goals. I ended up not really needing them for the fan-made scenarios, so I was able to use them to sort of expand the overall repertoire of bad guys. You can find descriptions of them on the enemies spoiler page.

I also spent a lot of time refining some scenarios, creating a couple new ones and figuring out exactly where the puzzle piece connections will go on each of the room tiles.

Lastly, I worked out the perk lists for the Cragheart and the Mindthief, which you can see on the following character sheets:

One trouble with these is that since we expanded to 15 perks for each class, we ended up with a very small amount of space for notes below the perk list, so we may need to work on this design a bit more.

Also we don't have the corresponding attack modifier cards for these two classes made yet, but that should happen soon, and then they'll be added to the advanced Tabletop Zen scenario.

Next week I'm going to focus heavily on getting all character classes fully developed and ready for play testing. I would like to start play testing new scenarios in earnest very soon, but I'd like to get all the classes ready first so we can do all the testing at the same time.

If you're interested in helping to play test these new scenarios and advanced characters - sit tight! That should be coming soon.

Art and miniatures

Not too much new on these fronts. Alexandr is working on a big batch of items, but he hasn't shown any of them to me yet.

I got the sculpts for the advanced classes from James last week and took them over to the mold maker, who said there shouldn't be any significant problems in making the molds for them. So in a week or two I should have the metal masters of all of those, which will be nice!

I think James is also starting work on the Cragheart and Mindthief sculpts. I'm pretty excited about showing you the process and final results of that over the next few weeks!

Other stuff

One other thing I wanted to mention is that the podcast I did with Rob Daviau and Dirk Knemeyer for the Game Design Round Table has finally arrived! So if you enjoy listening to me talk about Gloomhaven, there's another hour of audio of that. At the end I even talk about what projects I'll be working on next.

For now, though, it is 100% working on Gloomhaven. See you next week with more progress!

yeah these look fantastic. really looking forward to sticking them. would be good to be able to buy "reset packs" - they would include maps, envelopes etc - to be able to replay the adventure again with a different gaming group or my kids when they are old enough.

    2. Ehren Woods

Issac like I said earlier, what about those plastic sticker like things in kids books. They are sticky enough to stay, but still be removable. Is that an option? I suppose there is a chance that they'd stick to each other if they touch when the map is folded, but hey, since they are removable, no real concern there.

    3. William on

Liking the new sticker concept which goes further to reveal the map as you venture into new territory to discover the unfamiliar areas. In a way it's a bit 'fog of war' in the implementation, which is hard to turn down even if it doesn't alter one's decisions/tell all.

That's a lot of little art bits to create for Josh but I think when people see how realistic the completed map looks with all the stickers vs. simple numeric stickers, it'll be worth it. Anti-sticker folks that don't apply them will be jealous to some degree I think, even if they won't admit it. ;)

    4. Annowme on

Isaac, this is excellent! I think the application of the map stickers is fantastic. I have the map image as my desktop background at the moment... with no intentions of changing it. It's just fabulous artwork.

      Keep up the good work!

    5. Jake Waltier

I would very much like the stickers to be easily removable.

    6. Leonce on

      Wow, just wow!
To be honest, back in my head I was always a little sceptical if I would really like the stickers, but I trusted you, Isaac, that they will add something special to the game. I am stunned now and my excitement rises even more. Not to forget to praise Josh here. Great work and thanks for the update!

    7. Brie

I love those stickers and the feel they give to the map!

    8. Bahasa Inggeris

+1 for a PnP version so we don't have to apply the stickers to the map.

I like the way they look, but want to be able to replay the game, and if I have a map with stickers already on it, it'll be confusing the 2nd, 3rd, etc. time around. I'll probably wind up putting the stickers on the map because it'll look much better that way, but would rather keep track of the map for the game on a separate map.

    9. chang on

OMG!! this stickers look a LOT better that i what i though, they are clear AND they add some cool enviroment / story art.
I though there were gonna be like plain white background with X or checks... This is awesome... :)

    10. Marty McFly on

@Karrde - if the number has a drawing next to it, then it is unlocked, so it shouldn't be too hard to see at a glance what is unlocked (although, I'm not opposed to a different colored number too). Then, I believe, when you complete a scenario, a red X sticker will be placed over the number.

    11. Karrde on

Any chance the circled number on the stickers could be colored red or something? That way it would be easier to see which scenarios were unlocked with a quick glance at the board.

Loving the look of the stickers!

    12. Brutus on

Clear stickers sound neat, might be way easier for heavy-handed people like me, but still, I really like the muted simple approach, so they integrate well with the map. Keeping the grid markers at the border, but remove the lines trough the map, might be a good idea, but I don't mind the grid. Also the Gold / XP notes seem big, limiting them like Thomas suggest might be a good way to free up some more spaces for general notes.

      Akazius on

Awesome! The stickers look exactly how I imagined them!

    14. Gem Abed on

If the stickers are clear, I wouldn't be worried about misalignment them with the map's ink lines. Otherwise, I feel like I would be sad if I had several crooked stickers.

    15. J. Gillespie on

I really like the ink brush style of the stickers/map. I would definitely limit color (muted and simple scheme) so that it retains the old, hand drawn map feel.

    16. Missing avatar

      Thomas Owen on

I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised and enthusiastic about the sticker style. Don't know why I thought they would just be bland markers, you have proven yourself why more capable then that. Sorry.

As for the character sheets, like the check box idea. I also wonder why the Xp and Gold boxes are so big. Write a number for tracking, use pencil, erase, rewrite. They could fit side by side on the same plane and open even more space for you.
      Fantastic job gents!

I really like the stickers. I can't wait for the game.

Grid: I agree with others that you could remove the gridlines from the board, and just leave the axes printed on the sides. That would be enough for us to find the locations.

Stickers: They are great but I was hoping for more colour! The mine for example (53), if it is say a gold mine, I think that it should be in full colour with shiny gold and stuff. The stickers themselves are perfect other than my desire for my colour.

    19. Brutus on

Really like those stickers, they blend in nicely. Looking forward to see the map come alive ;)

    20. Blitzbuff on

@Fergus: May I quote The Boss Isaac Childres: printable PDF files for a new map and stickers will be provided through BGG when the game is released

    21. Missing avatar

Nice stickers! Being colorblind, I was a bit worried that it'd still be hard to tell what was and wasn't unlocked at a glance, but that makes it so much simpler!

    22. Fergus Conolly

So are the stickers reuseable? Could we work with magnetised or plastic stickers?

Please... Please... consider a print and play option. That way we can just print out the map and glue the location markers onto the map.

      Re: those stickers... WOW!!!

    24. eclipse on

Love the sticker art!!! honestly when I backed I thought they would just be a red dot!! But now seeing the art totally don't mind sticking them to track my progress

    25. Kløve on

I like the art style of the map. Very cool. The stickers look awesome aswell, different than expected, but good different. I am trying to only watch and read with one eye to avoid spoilers, but you are making that really, really hard. Good job :-)

    26. Yug the Juggernaut on

Stickers look great. Just hope they are easily removable without damaging the map. Also hope the stickers are reusable.

The grid makes me sad. It us a wonderfull map and the grid is just a visual noise. It's not necessary. I realy wish you will consider removing it. It's prety anti immersive also.

As another thought, "grave markers"... if we lose characters we should have grave markers to memorialize them.

    32. Bryan on

I am very happy to see the quality planning wrt the map changes. Will some of the stickers be more than *location complete/coloration* changes e.g. additional numbers/quests, redirects to other stories/character interactions? I ask because you 'moved the number 1 and didn't just remove or gray it out'. Once complete, I would see graying out a number and showing the new location details. (graying the black text not filling in the white background).

I hope, much like older artistic maps, we will have curious details and additional colorful pieces to place everywhere. I would think framing the map at the end of the campaign would be great.

    33. Maverick on

Multiple clear stickers could also overlap in the same vicinity and permit a cool series of progressive overlays.

"Hey, look at that mage tower that just erupted from bay!" Or an earthquake that opens a crevasse. Or a town that builds up over time. A diverted river that creates a bog. Sand dunes that reveal a shrouded city. A volcano that erupts.

@Isaac: Thanks for looking into clear stickers.

    34. Bryan on

      This rocks.

The stickers are (to provide a counter-comment) exactly what I expected based on your prior descriptions, and they look wonderful. Excellent work!

I gotta say I'm so very grateful for how hyper-aware you've been about keeping the spoilers hidden away and well marked. What I HAVE seen of the game reeks of quality design (oh a glorious reek!), and I don't need to see the rest to know it will be of the same quality. A huge draw for me is NOT knowing all of what will be in the box. I love surprises!

    35. Isaac Childres 4-time creator on

I'll talk to my manufacturer about the possibility of clear stickers.

    36. Marty McFly on

Looking at the map image that was put on BGG, it doesn't look like squares will work. There are a few squares that have multiple locations, and some locations are on the line of the square.

But clear stickers might give a little more freedom in placement and cause a little less OCD flare ups (which I could potentially experience as well).

    37. Damian Miller on

Love love love love LOVELOVELOVE those stickers! SO NICE for an OCD person like me, SO MUCH BETTER than just little numbers in a circle like I expected. Although, really, given the effort and thought you seem to have put into this game so far, I'm not really sure why I'm surprised that they're so awesome...

Anyway, I mainly commented not to remark on the stickers, but to thank you. Thank you for doing this thing right. Even aside from all the obvious thought you've been putting into the components and mechanics of the game (like those AWESOME STICKERS...okay I'm done), your conscientious and honest appraisal of the progress on the project, as well as your willingness to take the advice and opinions of your backers into consideration as you work on the game, really set Gloomhaven apart from the other Kickstarters I've supported. So thank you for doing right by us, your backers. I can hardly wait to share Gloomhaven with my friends--I have a feeling it's going to be the source of some incredible memories and great times for all of us.

    38. Josh McDowell on

@Chris: I was thinking of doing something like that (I am also a perfectionist).
@Asafa90: That's a good idea too. I'll have to look over the map and see if that'd work. Basically if there are more than one location in one square, you'd be placing multiple stickers over each other each time a location is activated in that same coordinate. I don't have the map in front of me to confirm, but I feel there are quite a few that share a square.
@Maverick: The clear sticker is something I discussed quickly with Isaac a while ago, but we haven't followed up on if it's feasible or not. It's something we can look further into.

    39. Missing avatar

      Asafa90 on

      Awesome Stickers!!
i was thinking maybe Isaac you could consider making them the same size of the map square...that would make placing them super easy because you just follow the border of the map square. Just a thought....they are impressive!!!

    40. Pepe on

      The stickers are fantastic!

      Chris on

I think the stickers are beautiful. But I also noticed that the mountain one overlays on both sides with the ridge on the mountain. Could you consider a light "frame" or box that is overlaid by the sticker for those of us 'perfectionists?' Right now, I'd freak out if a sticker that looked that cool was not placed perfectly, and that's going to happen a lot. If there is a way to mitigate or help players with that, I'd love it! Thanks

      Matt Mason on

Another "YES" vote for those stickers. I really like how they will slowly convert the unexplored map into a more detailed map.

    43. Maverick on

If the new map feature was on clear plastic sticker, you wouldn't have to worry about alignment issues when placing it on the map. Just move the adventure numbers to a location where the clear sticker (plus picture) wouldn't cause interference.

    44. Christopher Newbaker on

One more love for the stickers, guys. Complete surprise. Was not expecting the map to come alive like that.

    45. Tim De Smet on

      totally love the stickers ;)

    46. ionas on

Yeah, removable stickers would be great. There is some stuff that pretty munch holds until you remove it (think smartphone glass protection, like that)

      Scott on

I am curious as to how the stickers work. Are they removable? I ask because what will i do if i want to begin a new campaign? Will there be multiple maps and stickers available in the pledge manager?

Damn those stickers are NICE. Better than I imagined!

I was unsure/opposed to the stickers before, but seeing them and the way they blend into the map, I'm now fully sold on them. Nice one, Isaac (and Josh!).
